Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Doggie people...HELP!

Our 4 yo Jindo needs some help (OK, *I* do, but that's another matter entirely! ) She's always been a tad needy, underfoot, etc. Recently, she has gotten VERY bad about storms, freaking out, forcing herself behind feet, whining, barking etc. While I was gone, DH (who has no patience for anything or anyone), locked her in his bathroom (she cried and barked when he'd put her in her crate). She climbed in the bathtub and refused to come out for several hours.

Since then, if she's left alone at all, she barks. If she's out of someone's vision, she barks. This morning, 7yo had a nightmare and came to bed w/ me (dog sleeps in her room) and DH let the dog out before leaving for work. 630, I start hearing little rumbles, whimpers, then full blown yips. Having had 2 hours sleep, I can't handle this. I let her out one more time and went back to bed. She sat outside my bedroom door, rumbling, yipping, etc. I told her to be quiet several times and finally had to put her in DH's bathroom to get her to shut up so I could get some sleep. DH will NOT allow her in our bedroom (she sheds like mad and my allergist doesn't want her in with me either).

Any ideas? I'm thinking of adding some Rescue Remedy to her water every day to try to calm her nerves. Puppy Prozac??? She is the weirdest dog I've ever known.

BTW, the barking is making my ILs mad at us, too, since they live right next door and have their windows open all spring/summer.

Re: Doggie people...HELP!

I can't help you, but I feel your pain. The only suggestion I would have would have is not an easy one to make, or to hear. They make "shock collars" for dogs that only give them a small "zap" when they bark. I know it sounds awful, but I have friends who have used them with some success.
I also have an electric fence around my our yard, and both of our dogs wear the shock collars that are triggered when they get too close to the perimeter. They are given an audible warning, then if they ignore it, a short shock.

Other than that - I don't know.

Re: Doggie people...HELP!

Dogs can go on anxiety pills but I am not sure that is the problem. Is the anxiety a new behavior? It might be the family environment that is making Jindo anxious. I know you guys have been remodeling, you moved out for a bit and you have been having some financial woes. Like children the dog can be affected by this.

My advice is to be PATIENT with her. Don't yell at her for barking. I think I mentioned the "Look" technique before to you (or was that someone else?)

You dog needs to respect you. Carry treats around with you and every once and a while say "Look" when the dog looks up right away say, "Good Look." and give the dog a treat. If she doesn't look up right away but does eventually look up just say "Good Look" and just give a tactile reward (ear scratch). Keep doing this intermittently for a couple of weeks.

After "Look" is mastered it is time to work on "Quiet". When the dog starts barking say "quiet" if the dog stops barking right away say, "good quiet" and give a treat. If the dog doesn't stop right away but does stop barking within the count of 3 (count to yourself) say "good quiet" and give a tactile reward.

You also need to remember the breed you have are guard dogs and are bred to bark as an alert. It is VERY hard to retrain this ingrained behavior.

I hope I helped alittle. Good luck…and for Jindo!

Re: Doggie people...HELP!

NO SHOCK COLLARS! They are for only very experienced people and will not work in this instance...
You can try a plug in DAP, I used this with Haley after her bout with SA after we moved into this apartment.

You can also find them on ebay.
Positive reinforcement is the best way to retrain, Locking a dog in the bathroom will just scare her more.
When a storm is comming try playing music to mask the sounds of the storm. there are also "storm" cd's to condition dogs to the sound to get them use to it.
Good luck, and keep your cool when training, That is 1/2 the battle

Re: Doggie people...HELP!

Great idea, Deb. I would have never thought of conditioning the dog to the sound of storms.

Re: Doggie people...HELP!

My dog HATES storms. As soon as she hears thunder she freaks out. Luckily she just jumps on us and hides, but doesn't bark. I would NOT use shock collars, but other than that I don't have much advice

Re: Doggie people...HELP!

Thanks, everyone. I think a lot of the problem is there is no correction to the barking when we're out, so telling her to be quiet when we're here only helps a little. For some strange reason, she has taken to DH's bathroom like her "den" or something. She used to love her crate, now she hates it, but the bathroom, she'll just go in and lie on the rug, even during the day. I've taken to opening the blind so she has a warm spot o' sunshine on the floor, even. She gets antsy without hearing the storm, I think she is very sensitive to things like barometric pressure. I'm definitely going to try the thing Deb suggested (wonder if they make them for people, too??? ) and start adding the Rescue Remedy to her daily water. No harm and if it helps, then it's all good!

Thanks again for the tips and hints!

I know with out past dog, she thought the crate was punishment...she was a rescue dog and that was from previous behavior. We never put them in their crates when they are in trouble. With our dogs now, they know that their crates are their "homes" and don't mind going in. We also leave a tv or radio on for the noise factor but I have also used KONGS with a treat inside. It takes them awhile to get to the treat and calms them down while they are doing it. If you fill it with bananas and a doggie treat and then freeze it, they will work at it for hours.

As for the weather, many dogs have that problem. If they sense that their "family" is scared, then they will be too.

Good luck in whatever you learn and you could always talk to your vet for advice as well.
