As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). After work today I picked up my mom from work, and we went to her house so I could do some laundry. My sister and her dog were also there. When I went to transfer a load of wet clothes into the dryer the carbon monoxide detector starts going off. I look at it and the display says 'GAS', and then the number 280. I'm thinking this can't be good.
Now my dad thinks its nothing since we can't smell anything. So I'm looking at the detector for any information and on the back it says if alarms sounds, press reset, call fire department of 911, and get to fresh air. Of course the parents don't think it means anything. "Maybe the battery is dead" says dad.
At this point I notice on the front in small raised letters ( in white, the same color as the detector, so it was hard to notice at first):
PMM - Carbon Monoxide present
GAS - Explosive Gas present--get to fresh air
lb- low or no battery.
Someone told me to try it without the battery and of course now it beeps and says lb(no battery). So my mom gives me a new battery and I plug it back in and before I can even take my hand off of it it beeps again and reads GAS.
Now I start to get concerned. And what's the point in having one of these detectors if you're not going to react to it. My sister and I decide it's time to call 911 (first time I've ever called 911). So I call them and give the address and cross street and add that it's across the street from the fire station. They tell to go out side, and wait for the fire department, don't turn anything on or off or even hang up the phone, since any of that can cause a spark and if there is gas, not a good thing.
My sister puts the dog in her travel bag and places her in the car while we all stand outside and wait for the fire department. Now, here on Long Island the fire departments are volunteer, so the firemen have to get to the fire house first then respond. Now here comes the funny part, remember I said my parents are across the street from the fire house? We see a car with it's blue light go to the fire house, then the chief pulls up in front of the house. He comes over and while I talk to him another car with the blue light gets to the fire house and the fire house door goes up and lights are going on the fire truck. We start to laugh. The chief goes inside with dad to take readings. And yes, now the fire truck comes over, across the street. It was pretty funny. The fireman walks over to me and I of course had to say-that was a long trip, wasn't it (or something like that). They go inside to take more readings along with the 2nd chief that showed up.
Everthing was fine, thank goodness. The chief said it was the 3rd call today they had gotten like this, one of them right down the street. Some paperwork had to be filled out and while that was going on the jokes kept flying about how close they are and having to come in the fire truck. It makes sense though, because if they did need equipment then it would have been there already, instead of having to back again to get it.
The chief said the detector probably just needs to be replaced. They're supposed to last about 5 years and this one was only 3 1/2 years old. Thank goodness everything was fine. Eventhough we got some good laughs over it with the fire house across the street, we didn't take the situation lightly. If the dectector read PMM, for carbon monoxide, that's one thing, but when it's telling you that explosive gas is present-that's not good. We knew everything was fine since we didn't smell any gas and we all felt fine, but I knew I wouldn't have been able to leave my parents and sleep tonight thinking there might be gas in the house.
So that was my excitement for the night. Sorry so long.

I am glad your safe and that it was nothing serious. When alarms are going off I take them seriously. And carbon poisioning can kill. So you did the right thing.
You did the right thing!!!! Carbon monoxide isn't labeled the 'silent killer' for nothing! Leave it to the professionals to determine whether or not it is safe. I'm glad everyone is OK!!!!
Glad it all turned out okay. Ours went off a few years back from a bucket of cleaning solution that was underneath it for a few minutes! I've also heard they've been set off by a car started in the garage to warm up, even if the garage door is left open. They are sensitive, but they save lives too. You can never be too careful!

I'm glad it turned out the way it did - a funny story! But you did the right thing by calling 911 and getting it checked. It really could have been so serious. I hope that your parents get a new detector immediately (in fact if it were me, I'd buy one and install it for them) and if it beeps again, that they don't blow it off. A friend of a friend of mine's entire family succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
