As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Installer wants to come in the house -- no ID or marked vehicle!
DH and I are in a quandry. We've been waiting two weeks to have our satellite TV installed and finally, today was the day. The installer showed up in an unmarked vehicle in street clothes (no uniform) and had no ID to show us and only a printout of a work order.
So, we got on the phone and talked with the satellite company and they said he should have ID, but he's a contractor...
...well, that's a lot of help.
I asked about liability and what happens if he falls off our wet and leaf-covered roof. "Oh, installers are bonded and insured." But, we don't know that he is bonded and insured because he DOESN'T HAVE ID!!!
Ugh... we tell Calder all the time to be careful and check for ID before trusting someone to be in the house. (Not that ID can't be faked, but at least I could be proactive about it.)
I whispered in Kenzie's ear to go charged at the guy with hackles raised. Scare him a little so he doesn't try to come back some day and take our TVs and computers...
Could you all spare some "Good luck with that" pixies... thanks.

I don't blame you at all for being concerned. I would be the same way.

Re: Installer wants to come in the house -- no ID or marked vehicle!
As a former officer manager for a glass and mirror contractor I have to say - don't let installers into your home unless they're willing and able to provide ID and they arrive in a marked vehicle with a verifiable work order (signed legibly by a supervisor that you can verify actually exists by phone). If he doesn't have ID, he can't prove to you that he's bonded and insured. Call the satellite tv company and let them know that this contractor is not acceptable! Who knows what kind of nutcase you could be letting into your home! If you complain enough, they'll get a properly identified and insured contractor out there to install rather than have you report them to the BBB.

I can't believe he would show up at someone's house like that. How do you not have any id????? Good luck!

Hmmm.... any time I've had DirecTV come out for service (upgrades, etc), the installers always had ID..... Make sure you get his name/license plate number just in case.

Re: Installer wants to come in the house -- no ID or marked vehicle!
I've told my DH that unless I know them, I won't be letting them into the house and if he wants something fixed...he has to be here. I don't trust anyone and without ID or anything, I would say NO!

Re: Installer wants to come in the house -- no ID or marked vehicle!
Well, we finally managed to get corroberating info between the contractor and the satellite installation company, so we feel a little better.
But, he had a bit of an attitude about us asking for ID. We explained that we were doing it for liability purposes and not because we thought he was "scoping out the joint." Without ID, I have no proof that he's bonded and insured and I'm worried about him getting injured on our property...
I did mention that the neighborhood had been burgled six months ago and everybody (neighbors and police) are on the alert here. I told him that our neighbors would be questioning why an unmarked van was in our drive way and we'd probably get a slew of calls from them and maybe even a stop-by from the police -- THAT's how careful everyone's being right now.
I still he think he thinks we questioned him because he was African-American in a very white neighborhood, but... <shrug> there's nothing I can do to convince him that it's more a liability issue to me if he were to fall off our roof.

Re: Installer wants to come in the house -- no ID or marked vehicle!
No matter what they looked like, I would've done the same thing. Especially with no uniform or ID or company vehicle. You just have to be careful now. Good job!

Re: Installer wants to come in the house -- no ID or marked vehicle!
At first I was going to say, "I wouldn't have let him in my house." then I thought for a second. I am a pet sitter who works for a pet sitting company and I don't carry an ID. The only thing I have to prove that I am indeed a pet sitter is the file and the key to the house. Wow, this really got me thinking. We really should have some sort of ID.

Re: Installer wants to come in the house -- no ID or marked vehicle!
Robin, I think you should definitely have ID with some sort of employee number on it. That way, they could be told "Robin - #14577" is coming to your house. And the homeowner could check the ID against the number or call the company and ask for some sort of corroborating information.
Anyway, it's just a suggestion.
The installer is doing a great job, just he's a little sullen and won't look either of us in the eye. Bob just offered him lunch or some juice and he seemed to brighten a little at the offer...
Thanks for listening, everybody!

Re: Installer wants to come in the house -- no ID or marked vehicle!
I also go into homes as a home health nurse and I don't have a marked car b/c I am part time and use my personal vehicle however I always have my ID on my scrub top and our nursing forms with the pts. name and diagnosis, orders etc.. on it! I like when people look at it b/c I don't want people thinking I am casing there home which I'm not but we do see alot of suspcious activities that we are required to report (for example a crack house). I'm like you though no ID no entry unless I've called and checked it out!
