Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Perfect Shoes to Wear to Disney

Hi everyone. Just wondering what are the best shoes to wear while at Disney World. I have a few pairs of Birkenstocks and wondering if they would be good to wear to Disney World. I wear them just out and about but not sure if they would be comfy for long periods of time. Thanks everyone for their imput.

Welcome to the boards!
I wear Tevas unless it's cold then my running shoes.
Can't really comment on Birks, although if you find them comfy to walk miles in (and don't mind getting wet) they should be fine.

Re: Perfect Shoes to Wear to Disney

Hi Sparks and Welcome to the boards.

I don't know about Birkenstocks because I've never tried them, maybe someone else will have experience with wearing them at the parks. My favorite for long days at the parks are Teva sandals. They're very comfortable and great for wet attractions. My second favorite is New Balance sneakers, but when the weather is hot they sometimes feel too heavy.

Definitely the most important thing to remember is that whatever shoes you decide to wear -- be sure they're broken in before you go to the parks. Nothing is worse than sore feet from new shoes.

Although I've never worn Birkenstocks, my 22 year old daughter swears by them. She wore them all the time during our WDW vacation in Feb./03. We were on the go from dawn to dusk every day for a week and she said the Birks worked fabulously well. Her feet stayed comfortable and she didn't get even a hint of a blister.

Re: Perfect Shoes to Wear to Disney

Before our last trip I bought the most comfy walking sneakers I could find. (I think they were Nike cross-trainers.) I got them a couple of weeks in advance so I had plenty of time to break them in. They were just the ticket for me. Even though it was hot, my feet never hurt or felt uncomfortable. No blisters or complaints!

Re: Perfect Shoes to Wear to Disney

I wear Birks all the time (have heel spurs), but the most comfortable walking shoe I've ever worn was an Earth Shoe low hiker from *Wal Mart*! I think it was around $22, they had a men's style, too. DH and I both wore them and swear by them for comfort! They were also breathable, so if we got a bit damp, they dried out fairly quickly. I was afraid to try the Birks all day; after walking on concrete in them, my feet really start to ache.

I just bought Nike Straprunners for our 10 day trip in May. I didn't even break them in beforehand. That said, they were so comfortable, I didn't end up with any blisters whatsoever. I'll definitely be wearing those again when I go during the warmer weather

I used to be a Nike sandel fan. However, I just bought a pair of Merril sandels that make me feel like I'm walking on air. They are soooo comfortable.

I also take which ever two pairs of sneakers I happen to have at the time.

I think that is one of the most important facts. You will probably walk 6-10 miles per day. Alot of people don't realize that. So you need cushioning, support, and no friction (Friction=blisters). Each person is different as well. My wife only wears Dansko shoes. I've heard of people only wearing flip flops. I personally could never do that (not enough arch support).

I usually wear running shoes. I like the extra cushioning. The only problem is that they can be too warm in the hot months. I just picked up a pair of Adidas banshee. They are a cross between sneakers and sandles. All of the cushioning of a running shoe, but are made to be worn with out socks. they have big air vents on the sides and the top. I've worn them for a couple of weeks now in 90 degree weather and they have been great. I'll pack them and my running shoes for our vacation in September. It will be nice to change them back and forth.

"You will be on your feet alot! Make sure they are comfortable, broken in, and that you will be able to walk many miles in them." One of the best pieces of advice I have ever gotten about a WDW trip.

Good Luck

Re: Perfect Shoes to Wear to Disney

We just got back from WDW and I have to recommend the Nike Straprunners-I think I got them for $45.00 and have never had such a comfortable shoe for walking around the parks in. I put lots of miles on them and ran or shine they were very comfortable-no wet shoes or socks after a huge rain. For our next trip I'll buy my daughter a pair too! I did have a hard time finding them in our shoe stores though-got my online.

Re: Perfect Shoes to Wear to Disney

I have to add my recommendation for Nike straprunners too. Both my son and myself used them during our August trip and they worked beautifully. I also used my New Balance runners but some days, it was just too hot and humid to wear socks and sneakers. My daughter insisted on wearing her Birks and was fine with them. I think the big thing with the Birks would be to make sure they were really well broken in before attempting a full day at WDW with them.

Re: Perfect Shoes to Wear to Disney

My whole family SWEARS by our Birks!!! I have worn mine to WDW when it is warm out, but if it even looks like rain or if it is a little cooler out, I wear my running shoes. The only problrm I have had with my Birks is that the way mine rub on my feet in certain places, I have come out with blisters a few times . . . I haven't had a problem with my sneakers though. I got a brand new pair of K-Swiss trainers before my last trip and wore them brand new . . . didn't even need to break them in!!! They were really comfortable and very lightweight so it didn't feel like I was wearing bricks on my feet!!! Plus they managed to keep my feet cooler than my Reeboks . . . I don't know how, but they did!!!
