As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

My husband and I would like to do our first Disney 5K's during Marathon weekend 2017. It appears registration opens April 26. I've heard it is difficult to get signed up for these events so I am asking for advise ( in general).
1. how does having and active.com log-in help?
2. how do you register two people?
3. Since it is disney, do you just book hotel etc on-line through the regular Disney website or through the run disney site? ( i noticed a different phone number to call)
i think that is all for now. I'm sure I will have more later.

1. Not really sure having the Active.com account helped sign up for the races any faster. We still had to enter information. Maybe someone else can tell us if there really is a difference.
2. We have just both signed up at the same time using tow different computers. It takes less time to do this and I think your odds of both getting into the race higher.
3. When I did the Marathon Weekend in 2014 I booked our room through a friend who is Disney TA instead of through runDisney. You can book through runDisney, or you can just book through the Disney website. I would compare prices to see which one gets you the better deal. When I did Avengers at Disneyland in November it was much cheaper to book myself than go through runDisney. Remember, you don't have to book your room or package right away so you do have a bit of time before making your decision on that aspect of the weekend.
I agree, having an Active.com log in, not sure that helps you sign up any faster. I think just hitting refresh and having two computers up will get you signed up. I'm not sure for the race you're interested in if the 5k sells out fast? I have done the Princess 10k and Wine and Dine 1/2. Last year the Wine and Dine 1/2 sold out in roughly 30 min. Do not let that intimidate you, I personally think it's just a hard race to sign up for. I think you'll be fine!
As for resort, we always book through run Disney so we can get the resort discount. We booked through them because of the two races I noticed resorts were getting picked over very quickly and selling out. Especially for the November race. It's really just your preference if the cost is less for you to book yourself that's fine! Have fun!!
Already great answers, but here's my answers too. Just for fun. :P
1. how does having and active.com log-in help? It doesn't. I've signed up for races both logged in to my account, and not (as a "guest" or whatever). It doesn't matter. I think the biggest difference being if you have an account, you can log in later and see what you've registered for. If you don't have an account, you can't do that. I think, I'm not super sure.
2. how do you register two people? Either one at a time or, as already mentioned, on two computers. Or two browsers on one computer. Have a chrome window open, and then have a Safari (or Firefox, or whatever) window open. Toggle back and forth, or do one first, then the other.... I don't think there's too much fear of the 5K selling out in 20 minutes or anything! Should be open for a few hours (if not a few days). The site will be busy though, so just be patient. If you get the "you're in the queue" thing, just wait it out. It's holding your spot, so don't cancel and start over or you lose your spot. The only race of significance this January is the Donald Half as it's an anniversary year (and the race I'm doing). I predict that one to sell out fast. And Dopey too, as usual.
3. Since it is disney, do you just book hotel etc on-line through the regular Disney website or through the run disney site? ( i noticed a different phone number to call) Book it however you want! Compare prices, just as usual. For January though, if you call through rD, that 939-irun number, you will not get any discounts. The only race with discounts these days is W&D - and that may even be gone now with the shenanigans going on with that race. So honestly, I wouldn't even bother calling that number. It will not be a better price. Go with the standard discounts to the general public, or AP discounts if you have one.
Yes, some hotels do sell out over marathon weekend. The convenience of the bus/race transportation is very nice for runners, so a LOT of runners do stay on site. And there are some 55,000 runners there that weekend. So yes, hotels do fill up. If you have your heart set on a certain hotel, book it early and hope to apply a discount later.

I'm going to make a comment that no one else has made, and that might not be popular on here....but if you are looking to run a 5k, DON'T run it at Disney. In my opinion, Disney charges an obscene amount for their 5k runs (okay, so maybe it's obscene for ALL their races) and for me, spending that much for a 5k that you then also have additional cost for hotels, transportation and all the rest...that's a really expensive 5k race weekend.
The thing that annoys me the most?? You don't even get a medal for finishing...it's a plastic medallion instead.
I think it is amazing that you guys are training to run a 5k, pick a good plan and you guys can absolutely do it, but what I'd recommend is either not do the 5k...or step up and plan on training for the 10k instead - you've got more than enough time to work up to the 10k distance by then, and you will then be getting more bang for your buck that way too.
Just something different to think about....
Tim

In my eyes, 5K's at Disney are only worthwhile if you happen to be planning a trip there anyway.
Or are there for a longer distance race too, and want to get up early another day too.
If you're truly looking for a RUNNING experience, this is not it.
If you're truly looking for a fun time, walking, running, stopping for character ops and don't mind spending the obscene cash required for it, then this is it!
The 5K is not officially timed, it's truly a fun run in every sense of the word. There are still a few local 5K's that are not officially timed either, but most of them are these days. So if you want an official finishing time - wear a watch.
Just so you know what you're in for!

Do sign up for that Active account and register through it for the Disney races. Why? Because you will get that race discount they offer. Yep, it's true! My husband called them and asked why he wasn't getting the discount. They confirmed that he absolutely should have and sent us a check. They said to register through Active in the future and you will get the discount.
Sorry, one more thing to add...yes, Disney races are expensive, and yes, the 5k is not timed. However, marathon weekend is such an amazing time to run at Disney, so I do recommend signing up for that 5k. This allows you to be part of the fun festivities that weekend and have fun with other runners.
I agree that the price for the races is high. However, if I hadn't pushed my husband into the Haunted Trail 5K 2013 since we were going with our grown daughter who was running the ToT 10 miler I wouldn't have ever tried any races. For me it was having the Disney part of the race. I am not fast, nor will I ever be This is a fun venue for me to mainly walk with a little jogging.
I didn't race the 5K in 2013 as I broke my ankle. I have raced 1-5K, 2-10K, 1-10 miler, and 3-half marathons since. Next week is the Star Wars Dark Side Challenge. For me it has been well worth it.

Amy, What discount? I didn't realize there were any discounts for the races anymore. I have done 2 10ks this year (I am a walker, who needs to step up her game a bit) and we are going to do both Star Wars races (DL and WDW) next year - me the 10k and my BFF the 1/2. I was planning on doing the early registration for 6/7 and 8/2 (I own at DVC). This time I think I would like to preorder some commerative stuff, which I think you need to do on active.com (I do have an account)?
