Restaurants that charge [plate/meal] "splitting" fee - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Restaurants that charge [plate/meal] "splitting" fee
I'm on the reg. DDP & plan to "spit" some TS credits w/ my son (Considered an adult this year). Does anyone know which DDP participating TS restaurants charge the "splitting" fees & which ones don't. How much is the fee?
P.S.(Yes, I know it can't be done on buffets, Prix-fix or Family-Style.)
Hmmm, I've never been charged a splitting fee at WDW. I'm intersted in the responses. I was researcing DisneyLand the other day and was suprised to see some pretty steep splitting fees on the menu (specifically Blue Bayou) and I thought to myself I don't see this at WDW. I did read the other day that on the DDP you can't split an individual pizza at Via Napoli, but that's a little different (not allowed vs. charged for it).
The ones I'm planning to "Split";
Le Cellier
Tutto Italia
Teppan Edu
Chefs de France
Tony's
50's Cafe
Sci-Fi
Kouzzina
Yak & Yeti
Coral Reef
Does anyone know if any of these "for sure" DON'T charge a split fee from recent experience?
We share table service meals all the time and have never been charged
a splitting fee. Sometimes they split the meals in the kitchen,
sometimes they just bring an extra plate.
They throw me out if I am spitting, lol
So here is how splitting works.
1. Person A orders a meal and an empty plate. Meal arrives and Person A puts food on the empty plate for Person B to eat. This is free. Disney Dining plan charges for one person if both parties are on the same dining plan.
2. Person A orders a meal. Person A is charged a plating fee. The waiter sometimes will bring Person A and Person B their own appetizer such as soup or salad. Person A and Person B will each get a half entree and full sized sides usually. As to what is included in a split plate meal varies. In theory each person gets everything in the meal except that the entree is half the normal size. In this case each person is getting a full meal but the entree is half portioned so some places charge a lot.
You have to make sure you state you just want an empty plate so you can share the meal. Sometimes they will bring out two half appetizers on separate plates. Not guaranteed
Disney Dining plan does not care is people eat off each other's plates. They will charge person at buffets, events such as meet and greet breakfast, shows such as Hoop de Doo, and family meals such as Garden Grille.

Disneyland was fun with flag retreat and pickles. I have a home here, thank you. GAC is NOT a "front of the line pass".
She is gone but keeping signature. Laundry is getting done. My purpose in life is to help poor people in FL. Farewell, will miss you.

We split a burger at Sci-Fi in February with no extra charge, but we were paying OOP and not on a dining plan.

We have shared meals at the above restaurants (over the past few trips) with our kids (asking for empty plate) and were not charged any additional fees. We were on the DDP.

I am on the DDP, so I plan for my DD dining credit to be used at those TS ADR's. However, we are eating at LTT for lunch and Le Cellier OOP. I do plan to split with her on these meals and all the CS meals as well. I am very interested in the answers provided here.
That was good! (FYI - I did correct the "spitting" to "splitting" in the subject of this thread so it would be more searchable later.)
I've never been charged a splitting fee at any Disney restaurant that we've split entrees -- I'm pretty sure none of them charge the fee. I think it's just been mentioned as something restaurants do, but not specifically referred to as policy in Disney restaurants. (I've split an entree at 50's Prime Time and they split it in the kitchen, gave an extra order of fries on my son's plate, and we were not charged a plating fee -- again, I don't believe Disney does this at WDW.)
Keep in mind, however, that you will pay extra for a second drink. Whenever I split, I always pad the tip a little as the server is actually taking care of two people, but not getting a tip based on a larger total to reflect the amount of work they do to take care of us. (But that's just me, and I'm sure there are others who would object to doing that.)

LTT will be fine for lunch, where they don't serve it "family style," but as a la carte entrees. If you were dining at LTT for dinner, you wouldn't be able to split the meal, as it would be the family style meal and that's one of the several things you cannot split.
Again, the non-splittable type meals are the buffets, anyplace that serves family style (like Whispering Canyon's skillet or 'Ohana breakfast, or LTT dinner), or the event meals (like Cinderella's Royal Table, or Hoop Dee Doo, or the Luau.)

All CS meals can be split without a problem.
Thanks for correcting my "typo"; I don't want anyone to think I'm spitting anything Disney!....................:fo reheadslap: .........................
Thank you for info on Disney split-fee policy; I feel at ease now. After making all the ressie this way, I read someone mentioning that some restaurants charge this & I assumed in was IN Disney. (I think I read the same thing you did & mis-interpreted it.)
Anyway, you've helped a lot!

Yep, I knew this, but thanks anyhow Eileen. It's great to hear it from a pro!
hmmmm...maybe I wasn't clear but I had dinner at Le Chef's in France and one of my twins didn't like the children's selection but thought he would like my entree so I asked the waiter can he just have some of mine and bring an extra plate. I'm thinking it was a language barrier because he said no he has to order his own entree from the children's menu. I said oh your not allowed to just share? And he said no but I think he was thinking I was asking if my son could have an adult entree of his own or something and I wasn't clear. It all worked out because they did eat all their entree and he did in fact like it but it left me with an incorrect assumption that you couldn't share meals. Glad that you can because sometimes it works out for the better.
