As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Change jar?
Does anyone save money for Disney by putting change in a jar or container? What kind of container do you use? How much money have you saved this way? Just coins or paper too? Got any hints? Do your kids help too? I've never done this, but would like to here from others that do.

Re: Change jar?
We've always saved our change this way. DH and I are notorious for never using change while out and about. The change has always gone into our vacation account, and we even paid for over half of a cruise this way. We use a bowl and count it when the bowl starts to overflow. I take it to the bank once a month, and have a separate account for it. Not sure what we've saved over the years. I'm guessing in the past four years or so, it's been several hundreds.

Re: Change jar?
I always use old food jars such as from spaghetti sauce or mayonaise. I cashed in my change before our trip in May and had 2 spaghetti sauce jars full of change. I had a little of $110 total.
My son always gets mad because I have so much more change than him but I have to remind him "I work."
Another thing I do to help boost my change is when I have extra money I usually will get $10 in quarters and put it in the jar. For some reason it is easier for me to leave it alone when it is in the jar as opposed to being in my bank account.

Re: Change jar?
We have a medium sized jar with a screw top - I have no idea what used to be in it though! Like Cindy, I don't use change to pay for items - and I always empty my pockets into the jar when I get home. We've had up to a few hundred dollars in the jar!
My mother in law used to do this, too, and she'd pay for things such as new appliances or home improvements when the jar topped out - it's amazing how quickly change adds up!

Re: Change jar?
I use an old Planters Peanuts Jar for the pennies and a frosted cup that used to hold a Christmas candle for the silver change. (The cup says joy all over it, that's why I use it ) I'm the only one who puts change in and the last time I counted it was about $45. I accumulate it by never paying with coins. If the total comes to $4.01 I would pay with a five and toss the change in the jar. It can accumulate pretty quickly and I would imagine even more quickly the more people who do it.

Re: Change jar?
We use an old coffee can. It takes awhile to add up because most of the quarters get used at the laundromat. I guess we average about $30 per month in dimes, nickels and pennies.

Re: Change jar?
DisneyDude brings up another question. What do you use the money you save for? Does it go in the general trip fund? IS it for a little something special or a nice dinner?

Re: Change jar?
We have a basket for this WDW trip, and have saved quite a bit! I keep changing it into Disney Dollars so hubby can't "borrow" from it. It'll go toward food on our trip. I'm going to use his pretzel jar from college to chuck change into next, since it holds better than the basket. Since we have no vacation after this one until 2004, we'll probably use future change for a nice dinner.

Re: Change jar?
In Cub Scouts, my son made a pencil cup using an old coffee can. Since the can was one of those sizes that you might get in Price Club, it was a bit too big to hold pencils....so he added the words Disney Fund to his decorations and it became the spare chane can. Every month or so, when it's full..I wrap it take it into work and exchange it for bills which I use to but Disney Dollars. We use the Disney Dollars for souvenirs and special things, things we might not have otherwise done if we hadn't saved our change....for instance, since we are going on the Disney Cruise next year, we will use the money for a shore excursion

Re: Change jar?
We do keep change, instead of saving for something specific we divide it up occasionally and keep in our desk drawers for vending machines. It's just so much easier to have change instead of always trying to get them to take a dollar (or get change if your is really wrinkly).

Re: Change jar?
My family loves WDW and footbal so it's just right that we use football glass mugs for our change! I have a Buffalo Bills, DH a Philadelphia Eagles mug. These are extra-large in size, promo mugs that originally had 2-ft slim jims in them.
The first year we started this, it was only around $100. It went into our general fund. Since then we average closer to $200. Now we use it for special purchases, things we wouldn't normally buy.
Something special my Dsons did:
DS#1 & 2 keep their own change separately. This is for them to use any way they want. One year they decided to buy DD (was in college and couldn't go with us) ALL the pressed pennies with their money. They had so much fun going around all the parks/resorts and buying them! Then they put them in the Dppbook and kept it until Christmas. What a gift! At first she thought mom and dad bought them. Then she found out her brothers spent all their money on her. I hope she cherishes them for life! The pennies and her brothers !

Re: Change jar?
We do this every year. I an nuts about it. When a cashier tells me the bill is $6.24 I give them $7.00 and make them give me change. We save over $1000 a year. Like I said I am nuts about saving all the change.

Re: Change jar?
Every year we start a new jar, it's actually an old plastic container w/ Mickey on the front. All of our loose change goes in it, last year we had over 500.00 in it and used for misc stuff at WDW. This year I think we are going to break that. It is amazing how much money you save when you save just change.

Re: Change jar?
Please do not hate me. Ok? Promise?
I don't have a change jar. I keep a coin sorter out. So each time one of the coins is full it gets taken out and rolled. I have $416.50 all wrapped and ready for the bank.
Some of it will be used for gas for the car. That was what we started the fund for. I have more $ than the car will use. The rest will go toward our Auto train tickets.
