Digital photo storage during trip (w/o laptop) - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with digital photo storage devices? I would like to have something I can keep in the safe in my room where I can copy my photos to at the end of each day. That way, I am not walking around the park each day with the only copy of the photos up to that point. I don't want to bring a laptop, nor do I want anything fancy where I could even view the photos. It would merely be somewhere to store a copy of the photos until we get home. While there are many portable hard drives out there, there are not many with memory card slots that have a 1-button copy feature. I am looking at this device in the 40GB size: Digital Foci: Photo Safe Portable Picture Storage
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

The iPod used to be a great option but the latest models (the Classic, the new nano, and the Touch) don't work with the camera connector (c'mon Apple).
At $140, it's worth considering just getting more memory cards (2GB cards being in the $25-$30). Then again, it gets a little dicey keeping track of those tiny things. And you can definitely get a Photo Safe for less than $140.
Those are terrific options! I use a portable hard drive for my home-storage backup needs, but I may look into one of these for temporary storage away from home.
PassPorter's Free-Book to Walt Disney World It’s hard to believe anything is free at Walt Disney World; but there are actually a number of things you can get or do for little to no cost. Those look great! We just use several memory cards (2GB for really cheap)
and switch out after several days. However most of the time my DH brings
his laptop for work so we just download them.
I think my DH is also bringing his laptop so he can work. I was planning on getting a couple of 4 gig cards plus the 2 gig DS already has. Memory sticks are pretty cheap too so I may opt for a couple of those to store the photos (via the laptop). Does anyone know if there is a safe in the BCV and if it is big enough to hold a standard size HP laptop?
I carry a Vosonic VP-6230 device with me, it has a 60GB hard drive and card slots for every card type. I bought it in 2006 before I went to Hawaii for 10 days and carry it in my camera bag with me everywhere I go. I keep a spare battery charged and really love it.
While at Disney, with friends, I download their camera cards too so I get all the pictures taken during our trips...
It's slightly larger than an I-Pod, but much cheaper and it comes with the card slots built in.
Here's a link to the one I have, there are newer and better models available...
I did some serious internet searching before choosing this one, it was the #1 recommendation on 5 different camera lists when I bought it.
If you have one of the older I-Pods, you can get an adapter for your cards to download them.
Of course, the one you are looking at is also a great buy. 'Specially since you don't care about looking at the pictures, just downloading. I preferred being able to look at them to make sure I copied the completely...
on whichever one you choose, and as Matt said, let us know how it worked out for you!!!
I second getting what LizardCop has... I don't own one, but it's one of the next things on my list of things I need/want I was a little skeptical about them until I saw my friend use one during the US Figure Skating National Championships... those little babies are SWEET!
Cool! I didn't know such things existed. Will have to put that on a wish list.
I like to use smaller memory cards so that if I lose/corrupt/accidentaly delete one I haven't lost everything, but those suckers are hard to keep track of (and to label whether used or not).
Add me to the list of folks curious about what you get and how you like it.
I bought a second memory card case and the empty card(s) case and fully charged batteries go in a pocket on my right side and the the full card(s) case and discharged batteries go in a pocket on my left side.
I'm not saying backing up is not good, and I hope I don't jinx myself or other by saying this, but SD cards are rather tough and relatively cheap, at least compared to 60GB hard drives and what not. For some reason I left an SD card in my trunks once, and didn't realize it until I was in the pool. Now these trunks had probably been in the wash and dryer then the pool. I thought for sure everything on it was gone. But after leaving it out in the sun to dry out a while, I plugged it into my computer, and it worked fine. I'm not sure how Compact Flash is, but SD seems pretty hardy to me.

Most all of the digital media storage cards are reliable, but I don't think it's a question of the reliability of the media, it's about losing cards/cameras in a lot of cases. We've had a few members recently who have had cameras/memory cards lost/stolen while on vacation, unfortunately it happens.
I carry a number of cards, like others, to minimize the number of photos lost "just in case". I have had card malfunctions, for whatever reason, and the only reason I didn't lose those photos was because I backed them up.
The hard drives in the portable storage devices are the same type hard drives you have in your home or laptop computer, minus the operating system which is what usually messes the hard drives up anyway ('specially windoze )
Some folks believe in redundancy, others take a chance on one copy. Either way is fine, and both have their risks.
Just don't get like me, back the card up to a portable storage device as soon as it's full, then copy that to 2 different laptop computers that night
I have looked into memory cards, and I can definitely buy the number I would need to have one per day, plus a storage wallet/case for them for <$40. And while that would be cheaper and easier to travel with (i.e. no power chord, etc), I can't seem to get past the thought that I still only have 1 copy of my photos. If I get the $100 40GB backup I mentioned earlier, I would have a spare copy of all my photos until I get home. So, I am still weighing between the $40 vs. $100 options... and as I don't travel until late Aug, I am hoping the $100 price drops between now and then!
