TO GO OR NOT TO GO, THAT IS THE QUESTION!! - Page 9 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

With two kids I would say the walk is about 15 minutes at a lazy stroll from the international gateway to Spoodles.
Can anybody confirm that?
I would say that is a very good estimate.
Cheryl,
Just caught up and I am so sorry about your grandmother's passing. How wonderful that her favorite was able to spend all that time with her at the end. I am sure she felt your love and support with her. ADRs look yummy. Sorry about LeCellier, it is amazing how impossible it has become to get in there. We love CR, and hope that you all enjoy it as much as we do.

I'm all caught up Cheryl.
What a fabulous report you are writing. You certainly have had a trying year.
It's very interesting to hear all the juggling that's been done so far to plan out this trip.
Love your plans so far!
It looks like for sure your family and mine will be in Epcot on the 22nd. Hope to see you there!
The walk from IG to Spoodles is a leisurely 15 minutes.
Wow Cheryl, a lot of rearranging you have done. I'll be curious to see how Nick does with Boma. My DH really wants to add it but they don't have pizza and we have to eat at places that have pizza as well. I also didn't put Biertgarten on our list. These two I have put aside for our solo trip sans children one day.
Keep trying for Le Cellier. You never know. I call almost everyday trying to get into Coral Reef and Chef Mickeys. I have Chef Mickeys for breakfast but I was informed that they wanted dinner there So I keep calling.
I know what you mean about the t-shirts. I have to remind mine that he is 10 now and in 5th grade and his pokemon may be a little young for the other kids. It breaks my heart when he says he has no friends. We too will probably let our DD7 almost 8 order off the adult menu and let DS10 have the kids. I know they will let 10 year olds order off the childrens menu, I just don't know what they charge if you are paying OOP.
Hurry back.
Great update! the changes you made to your ADRs. You should be fine with Nick ordering the pizza at CR. While we haven't eaten there, DS has ordered something off the children's menu (before he discovered his appetite ) without a problem at other restaurants in the World. You can either pay for it OOP or use his adult TS credit to pay for it.
Another great "is she talking to me" update, Cheryl!! It will take no time to get from IG to Spoodles. Also, when we went to Spoodles for dinner in December, we had a 5:30 ADR and it was empty and super quiet. I've never known that place to be loud, per se. It's so great that Eric is always on board with your changes. . . . . . Danny would be like "yea, whatever . . . . " If you order for everyone at Tutto, the waitstaff would have no idea who you were ordering for, so I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to order one kids meal and one adults meal and switch it up . . . . .
Cheryl, I am also driving down from the Cleveland area and wondering where you plan to stay in savannah? Last time we drove it was without a child so we drove straight though the night, but I think I want to stop on the way.
You plans look great so far. We love Boma. It was DH favorite place.

I have just caught up with this report and having known you and your wonderful family for a few years now, might I add how excited I am for all of you on this most amazing to be vacation.
Sorry to hear of your Gram's passing.
WhenI called a few weeks ago and spoke with Eric to leave a message for you- I could have told him it was the "Disney Lady" calling had I only known that was my identifier. Bwahahahahaha!!!

Your ADRs look good; I loved Boma when I was there last September. The desserts alone are worth the trip!
Can't believe the CMs are so snippy about Le Cellier! It can never hurt to try (but I'll admit to almost being too embarassed to ask for it when I've called the past couple of times! )
After years of hearing about the ZEBRA DOMES I will finally be able to try one!!

I am getting so excited for you....20 days will go by so fast.

15 minute regular people time = 20 Ryan time. Unfortunately he diverts about 80% of his energy in keeping his mouth moving......

I'm sorry to hear of your Grandma's passing. You never think it will happen. I mean how are you supposed to go on without your loved ones right?
Hope you have a great time at Disney and congrats on the upgrade!!

It is hard when your child struggles in any way. With the autism Nick doesn't need/want/miss the social interaction but, like you it breaks my heart to see him so alone.

I hadn't thought about paying OOP for his meals. Then I could save his TS credits and use them on some of the other meals we are paying OOP...

We are staying in the historic district in Savannah, which is not super close to the highway. We usually stay at Hampton Inns so I have a HI book which lists all of the HI in the country. I ususally try to pick one closer to the highway, in a suburban/rural area (not in a big city). Savannah is about 12 hours from where we live (probably close to that for you).

Hi Maureen When I flipped through the caller ID later that night I asked Eric "Did MAUREEN call???" Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you the Disney lady called. He is worse than the boys about giving messages
School ended the first week of June and we are getting closer to vacation!! Nick had a small promotion ceremony since he will be leaving the Intermediary school and moving to the Middle School. We came home and hung out. Then I noticed the back door was open. Oh no.
Our cat is named Stitch. He really is a little alien. Stitch is 3 years old. We got him after our last cat (my beloved Trouble Kitty) died. Trouble was a great cat, he loved people and was very good with the kids. Ryan was devastated when TK died. He wanted a new kitty, I wanted to wait and get a puppy. We held out and debated the issue for 7 months. Then Eric caved. Nick was so upset when he found out Ryan was getting a kitten, he didn’t want any pets in the house.
Ryan selected Stitch. He is the best cat in the whole world. He loves to be with people and greets almost everybody who comes over (unless it is nap time of course). Nick tried to remain aloof from Stitch but Stitch quickly won him over. He took over Nick’s room within a few weeks. He hides his toys in there, he sleeps under the covers of Nick’s bed during his afternoon nap, he hides under Nick’s bed when he is scared. When Nick gets on the school bus in the morning Stitch stands in the bay window and watches. I know when the bus is returning because Stitch will come running back to the bay window. We call Nick Stitch’s Human Servant. Ryan and Stitch get along, but Stitch and Nick are BFF.
Stitch at rest
When I noticed the screen door I yelled for the boys to look for Stitch. He was no where to be found. We looked everywhere, inside and out. Nick became hysterical, Ryan started crying. We spent over an hour (with the help of our neighbors) searching for Stitch. I was really worried. Nick’s birthday party was in 3 days and I had ordered him a Stitch cake. How can we have a Stitch cake with our Stitch missing in action? How can we go to WDW and see all of the Stitch stuff with our Stitch gone?? Oh no.
I called Eric at work and he left immediately to join the search. We ended up finding Stitch in the back yard, I swear he wasn’t there when we first started to look. Thank goodness he is back home!!! We love our little Stitch!!
Nick's birthday cake. It was supposed to be Lilo & Stitch at the beach. I asked if they could leave Lilo off. "Sure. Umm.. what's a Lilo?"
Driving:
Driving to a vacation spot is different than flying. We can take anything (within reason – as Eric always reminds me) with us. We can stop wherever we want. Twice we have visited newborn nephews in Columbus on the way to WDW. Once we stopped to see my Mother in NC. We had a brief trip to Savannah in 2005. And we left WDW early twice.
I really prefer to drive. I hate to fly by myself but I am better when Eric and the boys are with me. Still, I enjoy having the time in the car to prepare for vacation. It gives us that separation between real life and vacation. Nick and Ryan are great in the car. They actually get upset when we have to stop thanks to the joy of video games. Eric likes to drive and I chat, read, and most importantly navigate!
On the way to Florida we usually spend the night somewhere (depending on what time of day we leave). When we leave on a school day we tend to drive 8 hours the first night and then 8 -9 hours the next day. On the way home Eric likes to drive straight through.
For our 2005 trip we purchased DVD players that attach to the back of the front seats. The boys can watch the same movie, different movies (if we bring the PS2), they can play a game together (Gamecube, PS2, Xbox 360, Wii) or they can play two separate systems. I also recently purchased a GPS system to help me on my travels out and about. Now we are traveling in style.
Most of our recent trips (WDW and Spring Break) have involved leaving during the school week. We usually pick which day we will leave (normally Wens or Thursday after school). The following conversation (or some variation thereof…) ALWAYS occurs the day before we leave:
Eric: I can’t get off early when we leave
Me: I know, you are already taking so much time off. I appreciate it.
Eric: We are really busy right now.
Me: You okayed the dates.
Eric: I know, I’m just saying I have to work a full day.
Me: That is fine. The boys are at school all day. We are fine.
The morning we are leaving at 6:30 am:
Eric: I’ll call you when I’m coming home this afternoon.
Me: That is fine, we are in no rush. I’ll pack the car up while you are gone. Maybe we can leave at 3:45 or so?
Eric: We’ll see, I don’t know if I’ll be home that early.
Me: Okay
That morning at 8:30 am:
Eric: How is it going?
Me: Good, I’m still getting things together.
Eric: I should be home by 3:30 to help you
Me: Don’t rush
That morning at 10:00 am:
Eric: How is it going?
Me: Good, I’m still getting things together.
Eric: I should be home by 2:00 to help you
Me: Don’t rush; the boys will still be at school
That morning at 11:00 am:
Eric comes home ready to go!!
THIS HAPPENS EVERYTIME!!! It has become a joke among our friends, they will call starting at 9:00, “Is Eric home yet?”. Then I’m rushing around to get everything together and having to call the schools to get the boys out early.
This vacation is different! We are not leaving on a school day. My travel plans will not be tampered with! Or will they?
The other day Eric asks me to email him our travel itinerary. Okay……
Eric: I notice we are leaving on Thursday.
Me: You said Thursday was good. This way you are only losing 7 days of work. Eight if you take off the day after we come back. If you don’t want to that is fine, I can get us unpacked and back to normal.
Eric: We won’t have much time in Savannah.
Me: We are basically going there to eat lunch, I don’t think it will take much time.
Eric: I really liked Savannah
Me: We had fun there
Eric: We should leave Wednesday and spend more time in Savannah.
Me: Hmmm
Do I really want another day in Savannah? No, not really. But Eric wants to go so we will. Then I start to think…. If we get there Wednesday night or early Thursday we can possibly eat at Paula Deen’s on Thursday and then be able to go right to WDW Friday morning (instead of waiting for lunch and then driving the 5 hours). Bwa ha ha ha (evil laughter).
Eric now wants to leave Wednesday morning and drive until “whenever.” Okay, that is very helpful. Knowing us we will probably get all the way to Savannah.
