Water, wildlife and wonders... a road trip around Scotland COMPLETED 11/6 - Page 79 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

The parade looked like a fun thing to experience, even though on a low scale. Glad you got to see other things on the grounds to enjoy after the letdown with the cathedrale. Looking forward to your next update and the meal, especially all the great meals you've experienced over the last year and this one must be truly special and exceptional! I'm expecting great coverage of this to enjoy and be jealous of!
Oh my goodness, it was and I can still taste elements of it, that's how good it was!

Friday 23 June – part ten: one of the most fabulous meals we’ve had in a long time
When we came out of there, we were hungry, so although we were early for our dinner reservation, we headed to the restaurant anyway. They seated us straightaway, and we were then in for one of the most fabulous meals we’ve had in a long time, and that’s saying something, given the quality of meals on this holiday.
This is Brown’s Pie Shop and Restaurant, and it was just wonderful. We had a combination of three servers, all young girls, with literally nothing to them, but then again, given the bar is on the ground floor, and there’s seating on the basement and first floors, and the kitchen is on the second floor, that was no surprise. They were constantly up and down the spiral staircase that linked them all, and my goodness, there was also plenty of running up those stairs too! Way too energetic for us, and we were exhausted just watching them. Well, I guess with that amount of exercise, it means you can try out all the pies on a regular basis.
I started off my meal with the mushroom and whisky pate with herb mayonnaise, dressed leaves and toast. I cannot begin to tell you how good the pate was. It was the best vegetarian pate I’ve ever had, and frankly they could’ve slapped down just a pile of that, and I’d be happy for the whole evening, it was that good.
In fact, we did ask if they sold it, and we were told we could take some, but we’d need to refrigerate it, and I wasn’t sure if the hotel would do that overnight for us, and then there was the question of what we’d do tomorrow. Sure, we could put it in Maureen’s fridge when we got to her, but we had two hours driving to get to her, and another hour or so on the way home, so sadly in the end, I said although I was highly tempted to get some.
Mark had the belly pork slices with sweet potato puree, onion marmalade and redcurrant dressing, and raved about his choice about as much as I raved about mine, which is saying something…
For entrée, we both had to go for the specialty pies, and that’s what I liked about this place, it wasn’t all meat ones. I could sample them too. I ended up going for the Great British cheese pie, made with a range of high quality hard and soft cheeses with broccoli florets. You could ask for the pastry topping to be left off, which I did, as I knew I wanted dessert, but in hindsight, that was a mistake, as I ended up nicking some of Mark’s, and would’ve been better ordering my own, and then not eating it if needs be.
Mark had the lamb pie with rosemary and redcurrant, and was blown away by how much filling came with it.
For dessert, Mark had the wild strawberry cheesecake, Pimms jelly and elderflower and strawberry ice cream.
I went for the selection of sorbets, and ice creams, and look at the selection they had!
I also had the elderflower and strawberry ice cream, which was superb. I’d been told a lot of it is homemade, and this particular one is made with ingredients from the chef’s back garden. I also got the mango sorbet, which was lovely, and the blackberry Bakewell, which did taste like Bakewell tart, but was a little too heavy for the other two I’d selected in all honesty.
All in all, it was a superb meal, and we both rolled out of here, completely stuffed. We’d definitely come again, and it’s just a shame it’s three hours drive from where we live, otherwise we’d pop back more regularly just for dinner!

When we came out, we found that preparations for the concerts over the weekend perhaps weren’t going as well as planned…
We made our way back up the high street to our hotel…
… and turned in for the night. It was impossible to believe this time tomorrow we’d be home after two weeks away….
The weather today was dry and cloudy with temperatures in the high 60s. The best thing today was our dinner at Brown’s Pie Shop and Restaurant. The worst thing today was the changes at both Lincoln Castle and Cathedral. The funniest thing today was watching them trying to get that vehicle into the castle! Today we tried visiting the National Railway Museum in York And the result was it’s amazing, and I’m so glad we went back. The most magical moment today was hearing the Shinkansen talk – it really took us back to our time in Japan.
So glad the dinner was that delicious! That's always a good way to end a day. Looks pretty tasty too. Great selection of ice cream and sorbets, wow!

Looked like an amazing meal from start to finish and great service from the three girls! Your pate looked amazing as does the herb mayo along with it. I love sorbets and I think I would have chosen all five! Too bad it's three hours away but you can always make a weekend out of it and see some sights you may have missed in the area on this trip!

That thought has definitely crossed my mind, but sadly it's not a good route to get there, so I think it will be a while before we get back there...
Saturday 24 June – part one: this is French toast?
I was a bit worried about how I’d sleep, given our room was above the bar, but actually it was all fine. Apparently it was Mark who didn’t sleep, and that was down to me snoring – ooops!
We headed down for breakfast…
… and it wasn’t a bad spread…
Mark went for the full English breakfast (note – not Scottish this time, although really there’s no difference ), but of course without black pudding..
I made the mistake of going for the French toast, and I was a bit worried when it turned up…
I guess the fact it came with smoked salmon, and scrambled eggs on the menu should’ve been a warning sign, as it was an odd combination. Now I cannot tell you what was in it, but it sure as anything wasn’t the French toast I’m used to. I managed a few bites, but that was all I could manage. It was just horrible. After that, the smell of food made me feel sick, it was that bad, so I headed back to the room before Mark to avoid it.
We made our way out, loading up our car for the last time, and headed out of the city. We did spot another of the knights and I managed to get a shot of it, but there were a couple of others we couldn’t get as we were in traffic…
As we headed out, you could see how high the city is, something we hadn’t realised driving in. Perhaps we’d come in on a high road?
We were soon making our way south, and look at the name of this place!
A bit further along, we saw parachutists making their way back down to ground – cool!
We had a very good journey for much of the way – look at how little traffic there was on this stretch of four lane motorway!
However, our luck didn’t last, as there was an accident near to our destination. Thankfully, Google was aware, and took us another way, which included us going through the village I grew up in, which was neat, given we haven’t been that way in many years.
