As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

I got really excited when I saw your story! My husband and I saw your ship set sail that day! We were deep sea fishing that same day in San Pedro and I just about fell off the boat with excitment when I saw the Disney Magic! I had completely forgot that it was here on the west coast for the Mexican Riviera cruises!
My family and I will be on the same ship this coming February so when I saw the ship I was yelling "THAT'S MY BOAT!! THAT'S MY BOAT!!!"

Day 4, Part 1 – Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
Before we were even awake the ship was docked in Mazatlan.
As I said in my last installment, we ordered a room service with the delivery option of 7:00 – 7:30. At 6:45 I awakened by the phone ringing. It was room service telling me that breakfast was on its way. I felt crabby at first to be awakened fifteen minutes early, but was back to my normal self after my coffee arrived. The breakfast was just your typical continental breakfast fare – fruit, bagels, muffins, cereal – but it was great not to have to make time to go get breakfast at the buffet.
After we ate it was time to pack my backpack with water bottles, sunscreen, hats, and other things for the excursion. I unzipped and opened the main compartment and there was my darn watch lying innocently on the bottom. I can only guess that the first night my backpack was sitting next to the nightstand with the zipper partially unfastened ready to gulp up my watch when I knocked it off. And while I was searching for it the next morning I tossed the backpack out of the way so I could look for the watch around the base of the nightstand. I felt really dumb, but at lease I finally knew what had happened to it!
At 8:30 we left the rooms and headed to Rockin' Bar D for our 8:45 meet time for our “City Highlights & Mexican Mardi Gras Fiesta” excursion. Described on the DCL website as “Check out some of Mazatlán's best — like the age-old Cathedral and the death-defying cliff divers — before enjoying a traditional music-and-dance show at a local theater.”
After waiting for a few minutes we received our excursion stickers and were promptly led off the ship and straight to a waiting bus. The first thing I noticed was that the port had a very peculiar (read unpleasant) odor. I guessed this was to be expected, since the main industry in Mazatlan is fishing, not tourism, and the port in Mazatlan is an industrial port.
Accordingly, tourists are not permitted to walk through the port and must be on a tour bus or special trams that ferry people to an from the entrance.
While waiting in line to get on the bus I turned around and took this picture of the ship. The people in green are the tour guides waiting to lead groups off to buses or trams.
The day was quite overcast which suited me fine.
As we settled onto the bus our tour guide Rudolfo introduced himself to the group. This picture gives you a pretty good idea of his personality.
He spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable about Mazatlan and had a great amount of civic pride for his city.
The first thing we did was drive through the city on our way to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The part we went through must not have been the nice part of town because it was quite dirty and covered with graffiti. After 10 minutes we arrived at the Cathedral. We had 20 minutes to look around. Construction on the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Basílica de la Inmaculada Concepción) began in 1855 with the main body of the building finished in 1880. Its two towers were constructed in 1894 – 1895. According to Rudolfo this cathedral is the oldest and biggest of the 61 churches in Mazatlan.
It was hard to get a good picture of the building as a whole because we were so close up to it, but its exterior is quite beautiful and unusual.
It also has interesting doors.

The large alter area has many marble statues of saints and angels.
The wall above the alter has a beautiful painting which seemed to glow.
In each corner of the cathedral were large, ornate alcoves.
The entry of the cathedral was flanked by two statues wearing real clothes. The kids thought this was very funny because we are catholic and none of statues they'd seen at any of the churches we've been to had been wearing clothes before.
What a beautiful cathedral - I hope you got to see the world famous cliff divers. I've heard so much about them and would love to see some photos of them.
