The “Hurt So Good” TR or How You Can Feel Bad and Still Feel Good - UPDATED 10/17 COMPLETE!! - Page 7 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Back at our room, we all felt so hot and sticky I think we would have all taken showers if we had time. But instead we tried to freshen up a bit before changing into our costumes for our very firstMickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party!
Believe me, I was totally excited about this. Not only was I going to celebrate my favorite holiday at Magic Kingdom, but I was also going to be meeting up with some fellow PassPorters to see Happy Hallowishes!!!
Kevin had to stop and model his first pair of Mickey ears for us before he changed into his un-official ‘Mouseketeer’ shirt that said “Where’s Annette” across the front.
My little fairies were already changing into their costumes; Kelley made a beautiful Silvermist and Cory a perfect Tinkerbell. And I had to slip into my Minnie Mouse shirt with my black sequined ears and red bow. A quick check to see that we had our MNSSHP tickets in hand, and we were out the door…
Riding the bus to MK gave us the first taste of what our evening was going to be like. For starters, fairy wings and seats don’t mix very well. Wings had to come off and be held if the girls were going to sit (or ride an attraction or stand in a crowd…but we’ll get to that later!) (Couldn’t they just fly to the park?)
We planned to arrive at MK by 5:00pm, get a quick bite to eat and then enjoy the attractions while we waited for the Halloween festivities to begin at 7:00pm. We planned to skip the first parade and meet at 9:15pm for our PassPorter Meet – then it was off to catch the second parade and finally the Villains Mix-N-Mingle at the castle.
After checking our bag, (and reattaching the fairy wings) we entered through the turnstiles set aside for MNSSHP guests. There were CMs on the other side handing out wristbands so we didn’t have to worry about getting them before the start of the party. It was fun to see the faces of the people who were just leaving that day, watching all these costumed guests arriving!
The first thing I wanted to do was stop right at the flagpole and get some photos of all the scarecrows set up along the square. In fact, I’m darn certain I took more photos than what I have – but I can’t find them anywhere in my files! MK dressed up in Halloween finery is just gorgeous. So many details to see – and during my next MNSSHP, I’m going to take more time photographing as much of it as I can.
Suddenly I heard the girls cry, “Ohh, how cute!” and crossing the street was the most adorable Minnie Mouse I have ever seen. But she was ‘Japanese street fashion’ Minnie, complete with bright yellow high heels - and the cute Japanese girl wearing this costume heard the girls and waved, “Oh, Hiiiiii!!!” and just made their day. (Kelley and Cory have an obsession with modern Japanese culture and just loved all the cute girls they saw at WDW this trip.)
I really wanted to stop and take more photos on Main Street – but I had some promises to keep. We promised Cory the first thing we’d do would be to ride the Astro Orbiter – and so off to Tomorrowland we hurried.
Some PhotoPass shots along the way...
My first problem was finding the entrance to the Astro Orbiter!!! Kevin knew he’d need to sit this one out as it was a spinning ride, so he found a bench right outside the entrance and we got in line. I felt so sorry for him; he was hot, tired and hungry, feet hurting from wearing new shoes that weren’t well broken in and pretty much exhausted from two days of non-stop action.
It took FOREVER to go through this line; I had no idea there’d be that much of a wait, or I would have made us eat dinner first. (Turns out it was a good thing we rode at the time we did.) We enjoyed looking at other guests’ costumes while we waited. We had a knight in full hauberk (although made of fabric and not chain mail!) and I couldn’t imagine how incredibly hot he must have been!
I ended up really liking this attraction. The girls rode in one rocket and I got one all to myself. I made a game of dive bombing the planets as we whirled past them! And the view of MK was fantastic, with the grey, overcast skies…
We met Kevin back on his bench and he shared his experience. Already he’d been getting some comments and laughs about his “Where’s Annette?” shirt – mostly from older people and CMs. But one young Asian girl approached him and asked, “Where is Annette?” He told her he didn’t know, but he was looking for her. She went away with a very troubled look on her face!
Kevin’s request was next. He had mentioned not missing a ride on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority – something new we’d never done - and even though it was getting late, I wanted to make sure he got his wish. We all enjoyed the TTA. I had no idea it actually took you inside some of the buildings besides Space Mt. – so it was creepy yet cool at the same time. We talked about how much better we could make this ride, which I feel has a pretty neat concept behind it.
We really needed to grab something to eat before the Halloween party got underway, and since we were nearby, we stopped in Cosmic Ray’s. Inside, it was already hopping with people, and we ended up sitting at the far right side at same table we had sat in on our first trip! Kevin and I had burgers; the girls chose chicken nuggets and I had to keep reminding them to be careful and not spill anything on those pretty costumes! Wings, again, had to be removed and held – and it was so crowded that there were no extra chairs or tables to put them on, so I ended up holding them while we ate.
We had so much fun looking at costumes while we were here! My personal favorite was a lady dressed at Jessica Rabbit, complete with sequined red gown; her husband had on a Roger Rabbit suit and they made a completely adorable couple. I wanted to ask if I could take a photo, but they had an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair with them and were busy getting food – I didn’t want to bother them.
Another thing that was fun about the evening – we had people who would surreptitiously take photos of us. One lady who was sitting at a table nearby would snap a quick photo and when you’d turn to look at her, she would quickly put her camera in her lap and smile. She took several shots – mostly of the pixies and Kevin’s shirt, I’m sure!
We finished our meal and had just stepped outside under the awning when we noticed ….it was raining. Raining?!? How could it be raining when just a few minutes ago…ahh, those grey skies I noticed earlier…I must have been mentally blocking that out. Well, there wasn’t much for it but to wait it out, as it was coming down quite heavily.
We stood on the porch of Cosmic Rays’ and watched people dashing out of the rain, or trudging through the water with ponchos (or not!) Kevin was pretty mad about it but the girls were just having fun. Cory turned to Kelley and said, “Silvermist, you’re a water talent fairy – make it stop raining!” and Kelley would dance around and work her magic. For some strange reason, Silvermist’s pixie magic wasn’t working very well that evening!
Tired of standing, Kevin took us back inside and then out on the patio to sit and wait for the rain to stop. But the rest of us were just too restless to sit around – there was a Halloween party out there happening and we wanted to be a part of it! Since the rain had slowed down quite a bit, I suggested we just put on our rain ponchos and get on with having fun. Kevin grumbled, but he agreed.
Lesson number two of the evening: fairy wings do not fit under rain ponchos. That means they must be carried. Fairy wings are also very difficult to carry while you’re wearing a rain poncho. (Minnie Ears don’t fit well under ponchos, either. And they get heavy on your head when wet!)
We walked towards the castle hub, and I think the first Villains Mix-N-Mingle had just finished.
We waited for a bit while the CMs completed roping off the bridges leading into the other Lands so they could allow MNSSHP guest in and other guest out – and then we made our way through the rain to the Haunted Mansion.
What could be more appropriate for a Halloween party than a trip through HM in the rain? Maybe a little lightning and thunder, but we were glad to skip those special effects tonight! It was crowded but we were thankful to have that covered walkway going in. We took a couple quick photos, but they didn’t come out well with all the fog and rain.
Lesson number three: fairy wings must be removed before doing any rides. Guess who gets to carry said fairy wings? This time, I sat with Cory and held the wings throughout our tour of the mansion. And once again, our Doombuggies stopped for a couple minutes – right before we got to see our hitchhiking ghosts.
There was a line outside to have photos at the hearse – but since it was still sprinkling, we decided to forego it. I knew there was a trick-or-treat trail nearby, so we located it on the map and headed over to Frontierland to get some candy! Very spooky down by the river with the fog machines going and the special lighting set up! I regretted very much that the Liberty Belle Riverboat was being refurbished, because I had heard that during MNSSHP, they told ghost stories onboard.
By the time we had finished with our trick-or-treating, there was only a slight drizzle coming down and we headed over to Fantasyland to see what was happening there…

You all looked great - the girls made perfect fairies Glad you were able to hit the two rides that Cory and Kevin really wanted to try. Sorry about the rain but it looks like you all were having fun regardless (even though you had to carry the wings around a bit). I love your Haunted Mansion picture...it just looks so creepy. The party just sounded like tons of fun - I need to figure out a way next year to get the girls out for a few days so we can go during the MNSSHP and the F&WF, the one season I have always wanted to try and never get too.
Looking forward to hearing more about the fun you all had and your PP meet.
Being from the mountains of southwest Virginia, when we stayed for the first time at Alligator Bayou at Port Orleans, I thought, "This is too much like home". Thought you might have the same feeling being from Nashville about AB and the Mansions. I like staying at CSR and CBR for a taste of something different!
Can't wait to read more!

We loved it, too. And yes, the spray got used again during this trip.

That's very true, and I've heard the same thing from some other Southerners.
I think one of the things we like about POR, however, is it does feel warm and welcoming - and it's surprisingly quiet. Sometimes it's nice to just have some peace after a long day at the parks.
But I'm with you - I like to try and change it up a bit. I'm going to see if I can talk everyone in to trying a new resort next trip.

Great update about MNSSHP I am hopping we get to go next year. Love the girls costumes they make perfect little pixies! Sorry the wings were such a hassel though. Cant wait to hear more!
We had a blast at our first MNSSHP in 06....we went on Halloween night and the CM's were literally dumping buckets of candy in our bags so they'd get rid of it. We ate on it all week and even took a whole bag home.
Loving your TR & pictures.....Cory doesn't seem to like to smile a whole lot, does she?
