Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

I am not sure why but this whole DVC really confuses me

I have a large family of 7 - we went to Disney in Aug and we are hooked!!! We have to get a 2 br villa whenever we go - My youngest son has Autism and only eats certain things so a kitchen for me is a must too!! We spent a ton of $$ to stay at AKV. I want to go back in 2011 to the beach club villas if possible but wondering if DVC is the way to go for us since its costs us so much anyway!!
This is where I get confused - we wont really have any extra $$ until tax return time next year so thats when I would like to maybe buy...How many point do we need for a 2BR?? Is there a chart anywhere that I can see that shows me?? Also would i earn enough points next year to go in 2011??
Do you think its better to buy through resale or no?? Sorry too many questions - I just feel a bit lost - lol

did you rent directly from Disney or a DVC member?

if you rented directly from Disney - yes that is a fortune.

from a DVC member that is just about the best deal you can get at Disney.

that say there are offsite timeshares that are pennies on the dollar - yea some are being given away. (be carefully of these - make sure you know what you are getting)

now these are not onsite at Disney - but they sell for less than $1,000. They also have 2-bedroom.

Now back to disney - if you intend to come every year or every other year - then DVC is worth the price. If you only intend to come every 3 years or even less - then DVC is too expensive.

generally recommend a non-orlando timeshares and you can trade to Orlando - cheaper maintence fees and you get more choices.

We had booked through Disney and yes it was super expensive!! We plan on going to Disney I would say every other year. We would want to be onsite.

if you went thru Disney you probably paid what $4,000 or more - probably about 20 to 30% of what buying DVC would cost you.

You can find the VWL points charts here:

DVCNews.com - The essential Vacation Club resource! - Villas at Wilderness Lodge Points Chart

Make sure you look at 2010 since the charts changed a bit compared to prior years.

All of the values listed are nightly rates. In 2010 Adventure Season, a Two Bedroom costs 34 points per weekday night and 50 points per weekend night. You can book as many or as few consecutive nights as you wish.

Whatever size contract you purchase represents the number of points you will receive every year. If you buy a 200 point contract with a February Use Year, every February 1st you will get 200 points to use. Unused points can be banked one year forward and you can also borrow from one future year.

Example: If you buy 200 points and only use 180 in 2010, you could "bank" the remaining 20 points. Then in 2011 you will have 220 points to use (your normal 200 plus the 20 that were banked.)

Thank you!! I have a much better understanding of this now.

I'm just dipping my pinky toe into these waters. One thing I've heard, If you buy direct through Disney, you can only buy into the DVC at the resort they are currently selling. Can someone tell me what resort that is right now? Thanks!

Dawn, that’s not entirely true. You CAN buy “sold out” properties direct from Disney, but it may take some time (they put you on a waiting list until they have points at the specific resort you want). The problem with this is, they’ll charge you more for the points at an “old” resort than at a new resort AND your contract will expire sooner than it would if you bought into a newer property.

Right now, if you want to buy “new” through Disney, you’re looking at BLT, AKL, SSR (treehouses) and Hawaii.

oooooo - the Treehouses?!?! Those looked so cool when we went by in the Sassagoula River Boat! (though...I don't know if I'd want to buy into that one.) And BLT is Bay Lake Towers, right? THANKS SO MUCH for the info. We hope to make WDW an every year thing (our first trip was 2009), from the small bit I've read, sounds like it could be a good idea for us. THANK YOU!

You're welcome!! I'm new to DVC myself (bought in December 2010), so I've been doing a lot of the same research you're doing!

I'm pretty sure that if you buy into the Treehouses, you have 11-month booking priority at any of the room-types in SSR, but you might want to double check that with a DVC rep.

BLT is Bay Lake Tower--that's where I own. I love the modern art in the rooms, and you can't beat the location!

I'd recommend picking up the PassPorter's Disney Vacation Club Guide. It's been very helpful for me as I learn all the ins and outs of DVC.

"Re-Banking" DVC Points?

I'm not sure if my question is "frequently" asked or not... Or even if there is an answer I haven't seen for it...
If I was a DVC member, can I "re-bank" the points I already banked?
For Example: Say I have 100 points per year... If I banked all 100 of my 2010 points to 2011, that gives me 200 points to use for 2011. Can I then "re-bank" the 100 points from 2010 combined with banking the 100 points from 2011 to allow me to have 300 points to use for 2012 (2010-100 + 2011-100 + 2012-100)?
(And, if the banking system works that way, does it mean that I could end up with thousands of points just by continually banking the ones I didn't use? Not that I have use for so many points, but it's been a point that has been on my mind.)
