As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears

Moving on with the current of the years.

Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

I guess all the animals here seem to love the interaction with the guests! Good choice on skipping the monkey portion! I know it was a rental, but I had my own car and had those guys climbing over my car and doing god knows what to it, I would not be a happy tourist! Some amazing shops of your visit there and reminds me so much of the AKL Savannah! More so than KS at the AK.

I'm surprised you can get so close to the rhinos. I'd be a bit leary of that - they're a lot bigger than me, and they have horns that can impale something! No thanks.
But it did give some good pictures!
The monkeys are able to come up as those deer did? That does seem to be asking for some car damage. At least deer slobber cleans off mirrors. Not sure a monkey taking a windshield wiper would be as easy to remedy!
Great animal shots. One of the things that I think makes the safari at WDW a stand-out is that most other safari parks make no attempt with the landscaping to simulate the animals' native habitats. The perimeters of the various habitats are usually visible and they pen together animals that would not be found in the same places. Of course, there's not too much Longleat could do about the beautiful green of the English countryside, but the environment is much more zoo-like than WDW, which, as we know, is Nahtazu!
That's certainly true, and you're right, there isn't much Longleat can do about it. I think they do a great job, given the confines they're working in.
I think the Rhino photos are awesome, but I think I would have keep moving too!!! If the monkeys get into your car how do you get them out? No thank you I would have to pass on that one!
I'm not sure... I think you're supposed to have your windows closed, but we've always avoided the monkey enclosure, so I don't know for sure..
Sunday 11 May – part four: how amazing to watch him behaving this naturally!
Then we were entering the fun part of the park, and from here on in, it was a case of keeping those window firmly closed… I think you can guess why from these photos:
The security here was interesting. They had some automatic gates, but the gates that actually led into the big cats’ compounds were all manual ones, and I think they were all operated by young women, which did surprise me, but as Mark said, it’s probably faster to get them closed manually than trying to do it automatically. They did carefully check before opening the gates, and again there were safari trucks in each compound, so presumably they could update the people on the gate with where the animals were and whether it was safe to open the gates…
This was the first area we came to…
The first couple of tigers we came to were some distance away, and were hidden in the grass.
I must admit, at this point, I was resigned to the fact that all the big cats would be the same, and we probably wouldn’t get much of a view of them. Well, all I can say is I couldn’t have been more wrong. Look at what we found next!
We stayed there for ages, just admiring him. It was just amazing to see a tiger this close up, and to see him behaving perfectly naturally.
Eventually, we dragged ourselves away from the scene, and entered the first part of lion country. I’d heard on the CD that there were two prides here, and I wasn’t sure how that would work, and only worked it out when we entered the second part, but I’m getting ahead of myself here.. The first pride were lying around…

It was cool to see lions up and about, but my goodness, we hadn’t seen anything yet!
When we got through the gates, we saw a car pulled up in an area with shapes behind a fence. We couldn’t quite fathom it out until we got right up to it, then we realised that behind the fence were lionesses with their cubs! It was really hard to stood them behind the fence, but I did my best. We counted between about 10 to 12 cubs in total…
Then we looked up and saw this amazing sight!
I tracked him and what he did next…
As Mark said, you often see these things, and wonder if the animals ever use them – well, now we know they do!
I did get some other photos of the lionesses, although it was hard to drag my attention away from the King of the Jungle…

Love the cats! I had heard that they've been trying switch the lions from being pretty much nocturnal, as they are in the wild. Works out better for the guests to see them awake more during the day, I guess. I can't get over how weird it is to see them on a green lawn! I'm sorry to see that they have more cubs, and hope they don't cull the population again when they grow up.
Eeep do I just love big kitties! How cool you were able to get such an up close encounter! I loved the lion clawing at the tree because it reminded me of my little nuggets at home!
