As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

What an adventure to get to and from the doctor!
Sorry about the early wake up call but at least it was something good.
Can't wait to hear about Brooklyn!

The adventures to and from the doctor's made me really, really appreciate my van It may be a pain to buckle and unbuckle car seats, but at least I'm not faced with hauling a stroller up and down many stairs every day.

Things have been a bit hectic here - the start of the school year is looming much faster than I like We got the boys' room repainted, but I fell off the ladder in the process and hurt my foot and have a lovely bruise on one arm. Luckily, Coach is pretty used to me and my hugely clumsy ways of getting projects done. Cullen's new bed arrives tomorrow, so the afternoon should be spent putting it together and getting it into place. Once that's done, we'll work on flipping the dressers. We're going to take the mirror off my dresser and then it will fit under the junior loft. Cullen and Patrick are going to share that dresser because it will give them more drawer space than their current dressers. Once that has been moved and reorganized (probably on Tuesday), I will take Patrick's old dresser for my clothes. Hopefully, I can fit everything in his dresser, if not, I may need to use Cullen's old one as well. Once we get the furniture arranged, we'll finish the wall decorations. We have a couple of pennants and the block O to put on the walls. Coach is also going to put the boys names above each of their beds. The last touch? One of my friends is going to help me transform their plain white tab top curtains to fit the new theme for their room. So far, the only redecorating cost has been the $35 can of Valspar paint (other than the new bed). I have to put a quick plug for the AWESOME paint because it was low odor, primer+top coat and dried to the touch in "60 minutes" or less - to be honest, it was dry to the touch within 45 minutes.
Between re-decorating, and helping with a large funeral this weekend at church, time is really starting to fly by. We also learned an hour ago that a good friend's son was killed last night in a car wreck. Very heartbreaking because he left behind a one year old daughter.
I will try to get an update posted tomorrow of the tour of Brooklyn, but I may not get to it until later this week. I have to get my on line course links posted for my job, finish my syllabus and get some paperwork for the boys' PTO finished. So please be patient

You have been busy! Chances are that awesome paint was made about fifteen minutes away from here. So sorry to hear about your friend's son. I am also clumsy during big projects. Not surprised at all.
Glad the boys's room is coming together, but so sorry you hurt yourself in the process. I'm naturally clumsy, too, and never have a clear idea of how any of my accidents happen. and for the start of the school year.
Glad you weren't more seriously hurt in the fall! Sounds like you're getting a lot done. So sorry about your friend's son.
Thank you!

It's getting there - I'm usually covered in bruises and clueless as to what I did to get them.

Back to the trip report
While Jill and Gabe headed off to Mommy and Me Yoga, Matt decided to fulfill Nolan's one and only request, a picture of the Statute of Liberty. The Statue had reopened on July 4th after having to have some work on the island after last year's hurricane, so tickets were still pretty tough to come by given. We debated taking a ferry past it, then he decided to take us through Rockaway to a grocery store (he needed cat liter) where we could get a good view of the statue.
As Matt drove through the area, he pointed out where the flood waters from the hurricane reached, and how high. In many cases, entire first floors were submerged. While store fronts have been replaced, there are quite a few empty buildings because owners just couldn't afford to restart or have located into other areas, further inland. We also saw a couple of pumps still working on keeping storm sewers emptied, and the one subway line into the area isn't operable.
There was a barge museum, and the museum was open, but a new walkway had to be created because the previous walkway had fallen into the bay, courtesy of the hurricane.
Along the right portion of the picture, you can still see some of the twisted metal fencing.
Here's another shot of the area leading up to the museum. This was taken through the original gateway.
Before Matt earned his Phd in environmental engineering, focusing on communicable diseases, he would have been assigned to work as part of the clean-up faction after a storm like this.
Just behind the museum, was a remembrance park. When I asked Matt what the park was created to remember, he shrugged and said "some nautical accident, I'm sure - there's an anchor there". Behind the anchor was a pole that used to hold a marker explaining what the park and garden was in memory of. Either way, the park had a great view of The Statue of Liberty.
Mom and Dad posing for a picture. It was taken with the cell phone, so no ability to zoom. The building on their right was a large warehouse that had been completely submerged in the tidal flow from the hurricane. Matt thought it was being renovated into apartments.
Nolan's promised picture
Another shot with a Tall Ship in front of it.
Matt & I
Playing with the zoom lens on my camera
After getting our pictures, we decided to head toward the Brooklyn Bridge. I wish I wrote down the street(s) we took, but I was busy snapping pictures. I do know that we followed water.
As we headed to the car, my Mom pointed out Matt's socks just as I was getting ready to snap a picture of him. The result??
Apparantly, he doesn't know how to match his socks.
Up next: Brooklyn Bridge and NY pizza

What wonderful shots of the Statue of Liberty! So sad to see the hurricane damage.
Thanks! It was a great little "hidden" park and a lot less crowded than trying to take the ferry past it. It was really sad to see the lingering damage from the hurricane.

Thank you! He was a great tour guide - even though he wasn't the best dresser He tried to claim "new parent-itis" but my mom reminded him that he's always been a bit of an "absent-minded" professor when it comes to clothes.

The hurricane did so much damage that will never be "fixed". So sad that people were forced to give up on their water-front businesses or homes.
So true Matt said that particular area is now labeled "flood zone" on some map which means that insurance rates are skyrocketing. Add in the lack of subway access, and the fact that you need to walk about five - six blocks to get to the bus line (busses have a tough time in that neighborhood because of storm related construction), it makes it tough to start up/restart or maintain a business.
