A First Timers Disney Vacation Education (01/07-01/23) TR - Page 5 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Just joining in. Poor Alex! Hope he's feeling better soon and can start enjoying the trip. I always worry about my kids getting sick while on vacation, but there's nothing you can really do. It just makes you so sad to see them so miserable!
Glad you made it to your cabin! Hope Alex is feeling better soon!
We were glad too!

A nap seemed to help him a lot. The cabins are great.

We think the nap and the Advil was the trick.

Welcome! I hated that he was sick but luckily he got better fast. He doesn't seem to stay sick long.
We let Alex play and have some water. About 45 min later he come to me and said “wanna go?” Now I was happy about this for two reasons. One, it has been a battle to get him to verbalize so anything he says to us makes me happy. Two, he was feeling better!! Looking back he must have gotten a 24 hour bug he was ready to go and enjoy the vacation now. So we packed up what we needed and got in the van to headed to Hollywood Studios for our 3:45 ADR at Hollywood and Vine. The marathon was over at this point so we were able to follow the signs to the park.
We parked and headed for the tram. Alex was excited about the tram and got right on. After everyone was boarded we were on our way.
Tom took Alex in the stroller past the bag check. I got in line for the first of many bag checks on this trip. After that we used our KTTW cards and entered our first park. None of us had been here before it was a little overwhelming at first. I grabbed a few maps and times guide and made our way to our ADR.
I checked us in and we had a seat. I don’t think it was even 5 minutes before they were calling our name and we were brought to our table. I was sooo happy they had table/booths. I sat next to Alex and he really wasn’t interested in sitting in restaurant but we were prepared for that and set up one of our phones with Netflix. He picked a show and started to calm down. Our server, next time I have to write their names down because looking back now I have no idea, came over explained to us how the Fantasmic dinner package works. She took one of our KTTW cards to check our plan and took our drink order. My aunt and I got up to get our first plates.
Now before I left I made a mental not to myself to take a picture of our meals. Well that idea did not get implemented really well. Half the time we were so hungry we just forgot. Oh well it was our first trip I was never one to take pictures of my food before so it is a new experience for me. I think next time I will get a neck strap for my camera so it is always around. Maybe I will remember. Anyway, Tom went up to get food after us. This was our first meal at Disney and it was sooo yummy. I was the one that got food for Alex and he ate some but I could tell he wasn’t 100%. I think everyone got 2 plates of food and then we went for dessert.
Alex was starting to get antsy so sue and I took him outside while Tom settled the bill. It was 4 TS credits. I realized that I would need away to remember the credits we had left so I decided to check ITunes. Low and Behold there is an app for keeping track of dining credits. There a lot of great Disney apps. I bought and used many of them for this trip. When Tom came out we walked around the area for a couple minutes then made our way down to where fantasmic would be. We had about two hours before we had to be there so we walked around. Near the sorcerers hat we saw our first Photopass photographer and got our picture taken.
We stopped at the sorcerer’s hat to look at pins. We continued to slowly make our way to Sunset Blvd.
I was so glad we got the dining package. Cause even at 5:40 the line for fantasmic was HUGE. I wish I had gotten a picture. I am pretty sure the huge line was from the Big Tour Groups that were there. (We ran into tour groups the whole time we were there and it is the one thing that truly does turn me off to January because some of the people in these groups are VERY rude.) We asked a cast member how we get in if we have the dining package and made our way to that entrance. We were brought in to the roped off part of the Fantasmic Theater and there was hardly anyone there. We were able to sit right up front.
We had about 45 min. until the show so we sat down and got ready to wait.
I really wish I had thought to bring jackets cause it was getting chilly and Alex needed to be covered up. There was a vendor next to us and I saw he had blankets. My aunt went over to buy one and come to find it was a snuggie. Alex didn’t want to wear it at first but as it got darker and colder he snuggled up in my lap. The closer it got to show time the more crowded it got.
On a side note here I was surprised at how many people just walked into the roped off section to sit down. The cast members were very busy getting people who came over to go back because it was a special section. I felt bad for the CM’s cause every time they told someone to move they got yelled at in a foreign language. I think there was one group that got told to move like 5 or 6 times. My aunt ended up moving because someone sat on the benches in front of her so she moved to sit on the very front bench. At about 6:40 the show started and things settled down. Alex spent most of the show like this.
I think his bug was passing and he was exhausted from the past day. Now he does not like loud noises very much but right before the show started he fell asleep and slept through just about the whole thing. I was memorized by the show from beginning to end. Since I had Alex in my lap Tom took pictures.
The one thing I wished they warned you about was the water. We got pretty wet. Again so glad for the snuggie, it kept Alex perfectly dry which was great since he was still getting over his bug. He wiggled during some of the loud parts and looked out of his blanket a couple times but other than that he pretty much stayed put. After the show was over we slowly made our way out with the huge crowd. We got Alex’s stroller and headed for the exit. Now our plan after fantasmic was to go to MK since they had EMH so we could ride BTTM and Dumbo before they closed the next day. We were all too tired to do that so we went back to the cabin. After we got Alex settled Tom and I hopped in the golf cart and headed to Trail’s End. We picked up our mugs and got a pizza, 2 bottles of water and two desserts. I love that even the Pizza boxes at Disney are themed.
When we got back Alex was fast asleep and we had our pizza. Sue got comfy for bed while Tom and I went in the bedroom. I got my journals out.
I wrote for a little bit and then went to bed. We were all asleep by 11, I was so happy we were able to follow through with our plan. A day that started out with Alex being sick turned out pretty magical.
Next Up – Heading to the Turf at SSR and a Musical Review!
Glad Alex is already feeling better! Great lunch and fun at DHS! Fantasmic does get very crowded, and unfortunately, not all of the other guests are nice.

It's great that everything turned out well! We had the stomach virus at our house around the same time as your trip. The worst part (puke) only lasted a day but it lingered in other ways. I hope no one else gets it on your trip! In all the times I've been to WDW I've never gotten to see Fantasmic. Hopefully this next trip I can! Your pictures make me want to

I'm glad Alex was feeling better so quickly and you were able to enjoy your day at DHS. Thanks for the tip about the dining plans app. I'll have to check into that when we go in May.
So glad Alex was feeling better and up for going to the park. I love Fantasmic! And I thought to myself 'they're going to get wet' when you said you sat right up front. Sorry you didn't know ahead of time.
this is me signing on to follow your TR! can't wait for more!
i'm so glad alex started feeling better quickly! being sick while on a trip is the worst--but having a sick child must be doubly bad. poor guy. but at least he got over it at the very beginning of the trip.
i laughed at your 'wished i'd known we'd get wet' thought about fantasmic, as i had the same experience. at first i was like 'what great seats' and then i was like 'oooh THIS is why no one sat up front'! ha!

This cracked me up. I remember the first time DH and I saw Fantasmic it was very cold that night. Around 40 degrees out. We had sat down low and decided to move because we didn't think we would be able to see well being so low down. Then as we were sitting in our new seats higher up we started talking about how the people down in the front will probably get wet because that seemed to be the theme for us that week. Everything we were not expecting to get wet on, we did. Then, of course, you all know what happened. The people in the front got wet. We were so glad we moved. Fantasmic!
