Will there ever be a Great Movie Ride update/refurb? - Page 4 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I would also like to see it updated, I find it a good place to cool of on a hot day, But it needs a face-lift..
Also one of the biggest wastes of time was Drew Carey's Sounds Dangerous what the heck was that all about?
I spent a lot of my career in radio and music recording (even produced and recorded some radio plays), so I've enjoyed Sounds Dangerous, which is, after all, mostly a radio play. Unfortunately, after the second visit the gags tend to wear thin, so even for me, it became a "nap out of the heat" place, even when I didn't intend to nap.

TGMR is my DD favorite ride at HS. I do agree that some of the movies are outdated and my resonate more if they include some modern movies. I don't think I would like much more changed about the ride.
I can confirm that the gangster and cowboy are going at the same time. They are different lines, one to the right and one to the left.
As for other shows that are not black, they used to have the Power Rangers do a street show and now that is gone, even though they have a new PR show on these days. My DS was a big fan and loved getting their autograph and photos when younger.
Really like this ride.I know it is hookey but so are so many other rides. It's part of the reason I like going, and even more so as an adult. Too many things are updated, and refurbished, then loose their charm. I'm only 54,but in my lifetime every sporting facility in my hometown(Detroit) has changed at least once. The theme parks close to us have closed,or been taken over by corporations or condos. I realize that WDW needs to keep up with the times, but let's take things slow, and keep some of the classics around for a while.

One of my favorite rides mostly because of The Wizard Of Oz scene at the end, so realistic and just plain awesome to me. I like the ride the way it is, I don't think it needs to be changed.

I've tried for 11 years to get the "cowboy" side - never happened! We always get the gangster, and it's getting old.
I feel your pain. I was getting bored with seeing that story line every time as well. I'm so glad I asked about it the last time we were there and the CM made sure we had the Cowboy version for that ride. I recommend the next time you're there that you ask a CM in the queue area if it's possible to experience the Cowboy version. They just might be able to help you out!
I kind of like the ride, but it needs refurbishing DESPERATELY Those sad little palm trees where you board are a source of anguish for my DH I think a few updates, some well trained guides, and an updated end movie with good clips would give it back its "oomph"

I have to confess I love this ride. Yes, some of the movies are dated but many are classics. I like the gangster scene. I hope this stays if they do a refurb.

Me&Hubby Daughterand Son
There have been times that some of the GMR Animatronics, including the Alien, have been inoperative.
Overall, I doubt the facade of GMR is likely to change. It's still Disney's Hollywood Studios, and the Chinese Theater is a Hollywood icon. Inside? There's a generation that simply will not watch black and white films. It's not part of their cultural background. So, Public Enemy with James Cagney is meaningless. The Godfather, however, would be a phenomenal replacement - far more universally known and appreciated. I never liked Alien, so a replacement wouldn't bug me. I'd much rather one of the bugs from Men in Black. Traditionally, though, Disney's solution has been to modify that final film. Unfortunately, the list of Hollywood's greatest hits only gets longer. At some point a total remake could be more effective than a re-cut.
The other alternative is to gut the attraction entirely, in favor of a new Great Movie Ride utilizing 3D, motion simulation, and the like. Would anyone object to that?
I totally agree with you Dave! I would love to see the other alternative happen though. They've had such advances in movie making in the last twenty years that a total update would be great.
My son (4 at the time) and my niece, same age, went on that ride over 20 times...it was their favourite! The rest do us enjoyed the smooth ride, cool interior, etc. my son's favourite part? James Cagney gangster area! 2 years has passed and my son still asks about this ride and we watch it on YouTube all the time! It's out of date but it's fun!
Teresa- what do you mean bring the "Aliens" back??? When we rode in Jan they still had the Alien section?
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond - I'm bad about not checking posts!
Anyway - back a hundred years ago, before parents got crazy and demanded NOTHING was to upset their babies, no matter their ages, the Aliens section had ALIENS in it. Not just the puny little pathetic ones you see now, but real ALIENS!! They popped out of the ceiling at you, came out of the wall at you, scared the living bejeezus out of you!
We miss that part! My kids used to laugh hysterically at them.
My family and I like many of the older movies(for various reasons) and so I would hate to see too many changes to GMR. I do like the fact it is not a simulation ride(I could handle 3D if they wanted to do that.
We like this ride also. My preschooler does get a little scared if we get the gangster scene just because the gunshots are so loud.
I would be very upset it they changed it a lot I think it reminds us of past times. I would HATE if they made it a simulation ride, I can ride anything but those rides make me sick.
