Disney possibly testing RFID wristbands - Page 4 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Already folks are carrying aluminium wallets to keep their credit cards from being scanned.
Those people are easy to spot too. They are the ones wearing the foil hats and looking for helicopters following them. There is absolutely no way to remotely scan your credit card. There is the paypass tech that allows you to touch your card to the scanner and have it get the info but c'mon.... they would need to touch the card. Are you really NOT going to feel someone grabbing your butt? Or sticking their hand down in your purse? And those scanners might set off an alarm with security at Disney's front gate. Hey, what's this bomb looking apparatus for? Besides, if the stars aligned and they did somehow, some way, get your RFID alphanumeric 32 digits code.... what are they going to do with it? They would need access to Disney's database to even compare it to so they can see if you have charging privileges or the DDP or see your room number. So they would have to program and program bracelet after bracelet just to get anything of value. Not worth their time. They'll just pick your pocket, steal your cash, and be done with it.
Now if they put a clock on it then I can wear it instead of my watch. I would like it if we could use the same one year after year and load AP info on it too. I am not too worried about being tracked at WDW. They will see that I am sitting and watching MoRockin again. LOL
Finally finished reading the whole thread. There are some very good arguments here, lots of food for thought. But my initial reaction to this news still stands. I LOVE the idea! I'm not big on wearing bracelets, but it's something I would do. And since the bracelets wrap around your wrist, why can't they wrap around your lanyard or belt loop or anything else that would keep it safe and secure? Heck, I bet in no time companies will be making lanyards with a D-ring or something at the end so you can wear your bracelet around your neck....or if you are "crafty", you can make one yourself. Or, Passporter could create their lanyard to fit the bracelets in a little pocket on the side that runs the length of the big pocket. Ok....I have a lot of ideas....LOL! Now, if I can just get the measurements.....LOL!

One other question / comment - would you need these bracelets to get your fastpass tickets? Right now we have one volunteer that goes to the kiosk to get them to keep the rest of us from clogging up the line. If we ALL had to be there to wave our bracelets that might slow things down a bit. And if they do away with paper tickets for FP, then how could we spread the magic by giving them away if we don't use them?
I would definitely miss spreading the magic if this proposed system won't let us give away unused FPs...
But, looking at the company's website, my guess is that (assuming they will be used for getting FPs) an FP "runner" will no longer work. Each person will have to press the bracelet up against the reader to kick out an FP. It might even be that the FP is stored on the bracelet and, to enter the FP line, you have to press the bracelet up against another reader.
It makes you realize that the science fiction of yesterday with everybody having a tracking chip implanted or barcode tattoo isn't that far off.
Just think...if Disney implements it...it won't be that far off that the rest of the world moves that way.
I'd sign up for the subdermal implant...but I'm not sure how much I want Disney to know that I love Dole Whips. I mean I love them and crave them constantly. But that means they'd be tracking the fact that I had them 10 times in a trip. How embarrassing.
Before you know it...they'll be weighing me on the rides...and then sending me text messages telling me to lay off the Dole Whips...if the health insurance companies have their way, they'll even stop me from being allowed to buy them.
I'm all for the single account. I like the souvenir bracelet...and Big Brother already tracks all we do...but I don't want the toilet in my room telling Disney how many times I flushed and if I washed my hands afterwards. I always do...but still...hope they don't go overboard.

If every child has a wristband, it's almost impossible to have a lost child. The scanners around the park will simply zero in on his/her location. Mom and Dad go to any cash register, report their lost child, have their card/wristband scanned, and the system will find the child(ren) that belong to those parents. Lost child is found first? Mom and Dad can be located the very same way.

My daughter wears a silicone bracelet with our contact information on it every time we are at Disney (or another large places like the zoo). She's big enough now that she likes to wear them on her arm, but before she was able/willing to do that, she wore it on her ankle. They were large enough to slip over her foot (which wouldn't be an issue if these have open/close abilities either) and it would be on over her sock. She was never bothered by it.

As far as the idea.. I like it for myself. As long as it's removable. So I could take it off at night, switch wrists.. I tend to breakout in a heat rash from stuff like that when I sweat.
Now for kids.. I have 3 all different ages, all different personalities. One would be just fine with it as long as you could take it off.. One would chew on it, pick at it, and just mess with it in lines, on buses, in bed at night until she destroyed it or lost it. My third child is really young and I don't see it lasting on him over the period of a week. I don't think I would let them have these anymore than I let them hold on to the current key to the world cards.

And there I think you may have just hit the nail on the head. These things are going to be given out to LOADS of kids and the number that would be lost on any given day would be ENORMOUS. Parents are the keepers of the Key to the World cards for their kids, so fewer tend to get lost, but if kids start wearing these things and they can be taken off, they will be lost right and left. They would have to be as light enought and permanent as the bracelets that they use on the cruise ship.
I'm on the fence about this idea. I really don't like idea of something around my wrist at all times. I don't see my kids enjoying this either. DD who has sensory issues among other things will flip! When we go on DCL we have to put it on her ankle and she still trys to rip it off every chance she gets. Plus she is sensitive to plastics, depending on what its made out of. For these reasons alone, I vote no. But I do like the idea of no more card. No more waiting in line for as some tour guide gets 20 something fastpasses.
