As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Sometimes I like to daydream about what I would do differently if I were to go to WDW on my own, as DH and I always go together. I don't think he'd be keen for me to put it into practice though!

So glad I found this TR. I was wondering about you just recently. I love reading your TRs and can't wait to read all about your solo trip.
I was in the same building when I was at POP a couple of years ago.
Great start - looking forward to hearing about all you did and the strange looks you got. I could learn to suffer the strange looks if it was on a solo "do whatever you want" trip to WDW.

So I was on my way to my very first park of the trip: Animal Kingdom! It was my first experience with buses at Pop, and I don't remember having any trouble getting a bus. (Trouble was to come later, however...)
Speaking of buses, I took this photo as I headed into the park:
Not that exciting, but I was so happy to see it! I especially love the balloons all over the windows! I was to get very familiar with these buses on this short trip!
I took this with my iPhone. Look at that beautiful blue sky! I didn't realize how much I should appreciate that blue sky on this first day!
I had to take a photo of my beloved Tree of Life, of course, but didn't stop for any Photopass pics this time.
I usually prepay for the Photopass CD, and I know I could have gotten my money's worth out of it if I'd tried, but that wasn't what this trip was about. As a result, I was in very few photos this trip. I felt badly passing the photographers by, because usually we run up to every single one, waving our Photopass card in the air! I had to get used to doing what everybody else usually does: walking by them really fast without making eye contact. It made me feel like I was ignoring a friend!
As I slowly wandered into my favorite park, I noticed something new as I passed the tree on the right hand side. It was a set of centralized Fast Pass kiosks for attractions around the park. I'd heard Lou Mongello talk about them on the WDW Radio show, so I took a photo. Never got around to sending it to Lou; I'm sure he's seen them for himself by now!
I headed right for the kiosk for the Safari, since I knew I'd be taking advantage of the single rider line at Everest. There was a CM manning the kiosks, so I asked him if we were still only allowed to get one FP at a time. He motioned me over to the side, and asked me which other one I needed. I told him I didn't really need one; I was just curious if the rules were the same as the FP machines at the attractions. He told me that since they were just trying these machines out, I could get another FP if I wanted to! I have a feeling they weren't advertizing this. In general, people know so little about how FPs work; it would only be those of us uber-Disney-geeks that would even think to ask about getting a second FP! I didn't really need another, but thought it was cool that I got a little bit of an insider tip from a CM! This was just the first of many awesome CM interactions I had during my solo time at WDW!
I usually go through Dinoland, U.S.A. to get to Everest; I just love when the mountain comes into view from this direction!
I also love hearing the screams as I get closer to the mountain! I couldn't wait to be the one screaming!!!
I went right to the single rider line and was screaming my head off in no time! I kept my hands in the air the entire ride! I was going to go on it again immediately after my first ride, but the CM manning the single rider line said it would be about a 10 - 15 minute wait and I had too much to do to wait that long! I told him I'd be back later!
One of the things on my to-do list was the Maharajah Jungle Trek. I had never been in there and couldn't wait to take my time wandering through the attraction. I was armed with my brand-new Hidden Mickey book, and I couldn't wait to start hunting!

Thanks for the picture of the FP kiosk. Don't ya love the single rider line for EE. Sounds like you had some bus trouble later on. Can't wait to hear more on your trip
