Non-Sun worshippers...I need your advice!!! - Page 4 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I've got similar sun issues - and I swear by Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer 55 block. It is pretty expensive - but it WORKS!!
I spent a week in St. Thomas - even worse than the Florida sun - and my boss complained - what did you do, stay inside all week? Seriously - I had NO burn at all, and I spent the entire time outdoors, and most of two days in a sailboat on the ocean!
Be sure to lather it on quite thickly - you should use at least 1 ounce for each application - and reapply as needed.
In addition - I often wear a loose white cotton long sleeved cover up to forestall any burning.
Be sure to also wear good quality UVA/UVB sunglasses - my girls laugh at my, since they go over my regular glasses - but healthwise, it's really important.
I love Neutrogena also . That is what I use . For my son Another vote for coppertone waterbabies !! I really slather it on .
What else can a poor auburn-haired, pale-complexioned woman who loves WDW and burns at the drop of a hat, do?
Same here and you live in Central MA like me - are you my twin???? I wear 50SPF sunblock 365 days a year. At Disney I always wear a hat, too. The sunblock is reapplied frequently throughout the day. We head to the parks for opening (usually have 8AM or earlier ADRs for breakfast). On most days we head back to the resort around noon. We swim for a bit (relax under the umbrellas) and nap. Then back to the parks at 4 or 5 when the sun is not so bad.
I also use Neutrogena sunscreen of 45 and above. I love the cooling mist spray version -its so easy to use with kids! Last year I also purchased a product called sunguard that you put in the laundry with your clothes and it washes in UPF protection. So a white t-shirt is normally 5% UPF but with the sunguard it goes up to 30 UPF. I saw it on the news and as far as I can tell it works. I washed all of our summer clothes in it, including hats and swimsuits. It doesn't smell or damage your clothing, either. I hope it's okay for me to post the website name, you can order it online at SunGuard.

I know how you feel. I have never tanned in my life, but I've had enough sunburns to know how awful they feel. I always wear a hat with a visor or large brim to protect my face and nose as well as the top of my head. I found one at sahalie.com that is SPF30, moisture wicking, and reversible. I also use a sunscreen I found at Bath and Body Works that works very well. EMS has pants and shirts that offer SPF protection. Last visit to WDW I did great except for my hands. Frequent hand washing must have washed off my sunscreen and my hands got a little pink. Let that be a lesson to me! I will now re-apply after every hand washing! Also, if you're wearing sandals, don't forget your feet! And if you splash yourself with water to cool down, re-apply. Then you, too, can look like me; Casper the friendly ghost!
I am alos a red head w/ skin so pail it is almost see through...use a 50 sunscreen and reapply as needeed I just got home lastnight and did not burn at all. i even went to the pool daily...
I have the same problem as you have!!!! I am allergic to some types of sunscreen - specifically those in less expensive suntan lotions and those in chapsticks! I tried Burt's Bees and that did not work for me, in fact my lips were so inflamed it hurt to talk. If you have the same problem, what I do is get a good quality sun screen (Neutrogena sunscreen with helioplex works for me! I use either 30 of 55 on my face - I know Aveeno has another great product) then I make sure to apply that to my lips. It is really the only thing that helps me. I'm sorry you have to deal with the same issues I've had for the past few years, I never had a problem before then but OUCH does it hurt! Just make sure you keep reapplying the sunscreen to your lips and try not to lick your lips as well - you can use a regular chapstick that doesn't irritate your lips to keep them hydrated. That's the best solution I have come up with. Hope it helps!
If you know of anybody going to Europe soon, there is apparently some type of sunscreen they use overthere that is terrific. It's not available here, but the Europeans swear by it. It is supposed to block UVA and UVB rays really well.
On the other hand ... I am strawberry blonde with freckled skin. I used to be the same way with my skin burning until one year I went to the Dominican Republic in the winter. Beforehand, I went to the tanning booth for 2 whole months., starting with 5 minutes 3 times a week. I never was able to go more than 12 minutes at a time. But, my skin has never responded to the sun better. Every year now I just put on regular SPF 15 and I don't burn but get a nice tan.

I've honestly never thought of using sunscreen for my face on my lips. What a great idea. I'll have to try some before I go. Every chapstick I've tried makes my lips itch, swell and just plain ugh. I hate hat hair and once I burned so badly that I had to spend the rest of our Magical vacation under an umberellaor go home on day 2 of a 10 day tip.
Wish me luck,
Linda
I'm so glad I happened upon this thread. The sunguard laundry additive sounds great. I'm a firm believer in sun screen as I've been going to the dermatologist for about 5 years to keep an eye on skin cancer from too much sun as a kid.I'm about as pale as they come and don't really like it but dislike skin cancer even more. There's always a self tanner which is better than nothing . I will use these on my face and arms almost year round just to keep a "healthy glow".

I live in South Florida. Bull Frog SPF 50 is the best. You don't have to reapply as often as you do with other sunblocks. If you do have sentative eyes use water babies on your face. Don't forget about the tops of your ears. Mine have fried too often. Most of the Disney lines have a fair amount of shade. When going from one place to another and the group stops, seak out some shade. That makes a world of difference. The sun from noon to 3 is the strongest. If you like breaks in your day a great time to go back to the hotel and take a rest. I am a red head with very fair skin. If you are staying on property arrange your vacation around extra magic hours. Morning and evening. Less sun then. And most important...have a great time!!
I was a sun worshipper in my younger years & now avoid tanning too much because I don't want to damage my skin. Since you are going in August I would definitely schedule shows or indoor attractions spread out through the day. For some reason it is always hotter in AK than everywhere else, I swear the great minds at Disney try to make it really feel like you are in Africa. We try to do The Lion King show mid-morning (a good time to reapply sunscreen) and then it's a short time till lunch (reapply again). We also like the mid-day returns to the resort for a rest.
I picked up some moisture-wicking-sun-blocking shirts from Lands End at Sears a few weeks ago... For MYSELF!!! I had never seen nice ones, they look like tee shirts, and long sleeve crew shirts. I have worn the long sleeve one many times, including today, at the beach for 3 hours midday, and have gotten no burn through them (and I have burned through my clothes before!) We use Water babies for most of our needs, but have stumbled across Badger sunblock (like badger balm). It's got Zinc in it, and lacks some of the icky-er chemicals that are in Water babies (although it is a bit greasier... trade off.... not totally sold yet )
We also stay inside from 11-3 usually, at the parks we head back after lunch, and go back out between 3 and 4
Okay, so I just found out that I am allergic to suncreen. Something that has developed since last summer. I thought it was the lip balms that I tried but it wasn't. I have long thick hair and it's all I can do to pull it up. If I find a hat it has to have a brim the size of my state to protect me.I'm still working on it. I have a little more time. I got a good sugestion from someone that has the same problem and might have to go with somehting containing titanium dioxide. I'll check into this this weekend. Wish me luck. Thanks for all your advice.
Linda
