Budget SE Asia trip, Summer 2016 Updated real-time - Page 4 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Thanks Cam. It's funny to write that much about 1 day in SF when we are going to Asia for 9 weeks...but it's the Oregon-SF and HKDL portions that will probably have the most detailed plans.

You know, what's striking me is how little I will actually plan. With a trip this long, it doesn't make sense to do a blitzkrieg survey of major sites. In my next installment, I'm going to post on general touring philosophy and strategy, as well as some conundrums that have come up.
Having just been there, I'd definitely go for the Walt Disney Family Museum - it was amazing!
I just peeked over at your TR...And caught your latest installment on the WDFM. Didn't want to look to carefully, as I may be there myself in a few months, but you definitely did wet my whistle for this place. QUESTION: You had a ticket with a time slot to visit. How many folks do they let in? Do they kick you out after a certain amt of time? Do they have a picnic/snack area?

You have to pick a time slot if you book in advance, although in all truth, we were late by about half an hour and they couldn't have cared less, they just let us straight in. The woman at the door seemed quite surprised I'd booked ahead, as she asked if I needed tickets and when I said she said "oh you are organised, you could work here", which surprised me. I guess maybe they don't get that many people booking ahead. I suspect, if it's packed, then they'll stick to the timed entry, but apart from that, they don't appear bothered.
We had as long as we wanted to make our way through the exhibition and, the way it's laid out there's no way to kick you out after a certain time. The museum has lots of green areas outside and, on the day we visited, they were having a festival on the main big one, so I suspect you probably can have a picnic there, but I don't know for sure.
This looks like a great adventure and such an amazing trip! The plans are shaping up and glad you are going to experience so many amazing things in Asia. HKDL sounds like a great time and you got a good deal on it! You did well with the air fare too!

My TR from my most recent trip is now underway. Includes: Universal Studios Florida, Disney World and Sea World Orlando Trifecta TR -Updated December 10th! TR is now COMPLETED!
DH wants to go to Disneyland Shanghai! I'll rephrase that. DH wants to use DL Shanghai as an excuse to travel to that area of China. Since we have no firm plans and no need to go anywhere at any specific time...anchors (like a theme park ) are really useful for adding structure to the trip.
I'm super psyched that DH is accepting and rolling with my recent (2+ year) Disney fixation.
That sounds great and a good option which will make this trip that much better!

What wonderful news! I have to say Shanghai looks like it's going to be amazing and I want to get there sooner rather than later.
I haven't read a whole ton about SD, but I did read a little article recently that piqued my interest for sure. OK,who am I kidding. I post here daily. They could open ANY Disney park, ANYWHERE, and I would be all over it. But I do like the idea of the "gardens of imagination" hub. It sounds like this park is going to be AWESOME and different, not as much a clone of DLCA, more of a destination in it's own right.
Honestly, going right after it opens doesn't thrill me. I like to know what I'm getting into, both crowd-wise and attraction-wise. It will be too early for there to be guidebooks or comprehensive touring plan blogs. I'll be doing it on my own! Hope I don't get bit by a snake, crushed by a rock, or fly out into space!
I know! It's not a given. What I do know is that it's a 19 hr train ride from Hong Kong, and the fare is reported to be $65 one-way. DH started to drag his feet when he heard that. But I'm betting there are cheaper ways to travel there. It's not a direction we were considering heading, so it still might not happen, but I'm thinking it still might.
This update is vague and probably boring, but it did happen, so I'll post it.
DH and I found time to look at a map and talk about dates. He's been talking about Western China into Kyrgyzstan, plus Shanghai, plus Myanmar, plus the SE Asia peninsula. And happily, during our talk, reality set in. We don't really like madly rushing from place to place, and we really like to "base" in one or two locations and take side trips. That is not conducive to a 1000-2000 mile trek across the whole of China.
With him accepting this, we now have a preliminary vague itinerary scaffolding:
Week 1-Hong Kong
Week 2-Train down coast of Vietnam, with stop offs.
Week 3-Set up base in Don Det, Laos (where we have friends). This is on the southern border shared with Cambodia. Here's a pic of our friends in front of the guesthouse we will be staying at, I think. They have since build their own home. Aren't they the cutest ever? Donna came into some money (they used to be dead broke) and they retired in Laos.
Week 4-Week7 Side trips in Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand
Week 8-9 Enter Myanmar, travel north back to China, travel up to Shanghai, visiting You-Know-What, then back to HK for the flight home.
I'll post more pics at some point, these are all stock photos but give a great idea of the delights that await us!
