A Magical voyage across the pond LIVE UPDATE 9/30 - Page 34 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Plans are looking good and you begin your packing farther ahead than me. I usually begin about ten days prior and it's documents and just the non clothing items I begin to back and things I will not need day to day. Hope you find something to do in NYC. I'm not sure if you've been here in your trips to NYC but it's a place I know you'd enjoy!
American Museum of Natural History
It's at Central Park West and 79th Street.
We have been there with Sharon before. It's definitely not somewhere we'd go on that day. We'd already agreed that if we were getting off, we'd only do something we could walk to, so we're not dependant on any public transportation to get us back to the ship on time. This is still embarkation day after all and we don't want to miss our sailing.
Pre-trip report – part thirty four: back to Dover…
We ended up doing a return trip to Dover, but not on the day we planned. The Magic was back in port and we were going to down and say hello to her again, but guess what? The day she was coming in, we were due heavy rain and high winds. Does this sound familiar to anyone? We decided to postpone our plans by one day and headed out to meet up with friends to tour gardens a day later and thank goodness we did. The weather was so much better!
As we were relatively close to Dover, we decided that we’d head that way. The Magic may not have been in, but another cruise ship was…
We got a wonderful view of the famous White Cliffs with the sun glinting off them…
As you can see, the beach here isn’t bad…
.. so I wandered on to it to get some photos:
It was significant that I headed on to the beach, because it’s the first time I’ve been on to a beach since the operation on my ankle at the start of March. It stood up Ok, although there was a point where it nearly gave way. When we walked around the gardens with our friends, I also tried out my walking boots, again for the first time since the operation. It managed fine, but let’s put it this way, they won’t be coming on the cruise with me. I lasted an hour and a half and when I got my foot out, my goodness, it didn’t look great. It felt Ok, but I think it was telling me it had had enough!
The seafront itself also had this lovely statue…
The number of people lost though is just mind blowing.
As we walked back to the car, we found this little guy waiting to check into a hotel!
I made sure to pack the sunscreen when I got home, as I realised that I’d got wind burnt while walking around in the gardens and on the seafront. I’m very good at putting it on when it’s a hot day, but not so much when it’s cloudy, as I always stupidly think I’ll be fine. I need to remember when we’re at sea, as I don’t want to end up red and raw…
Over the next few days, there wasn’t much to report… that is apart from the documents finally turning up for a lot of people in the Facebook group on the New York City to Quebec City cruise. No sign of ours though, as I write this anyway. Of course, now I’ve written that, it will probably show up. We’re just over a week out, so it is getting a bit tight on time…
I’ve got the remainder of our Canadian dollars and have added some money on to our prepaid currency card as well. I lucked out with that. There was talk of a deal over Brexit and the pound shot up overnight. Thankfully I was picking up the currency the next day, so I was at least able to benefit from that.
After trying out the walking boots, I decided to give my winter boots a go, given some of the weather while we’re away and the fact we’re heading into winter when we get back. I don’t care how my ankle feels, it’s going to have to get used to something more than sandals sooner or later. It didn’t react as badly. I’ve managed to drive to work in them and wear them for a couple of hours before it started to complain. I also managed to walk around in them at lunchtime, so I think I should be Ok with them, but it will take some time…

The White Cliffs are so beautiful and your beaches there look like they're full of crushed rocks and shells. Do you have any sandy beaches around you? Sorry your walking boots didn't fair as well for you as you had hoped. Hopefully your winter boots will be alright after walking with them enough. Hope you get your cruise papers for the NY to Quebec leg of the trip before you have to leave for your trip!
It was such a thrill sailing out of Dover with those famous white cliffs.
It was strange, realizing more beaches are rocky than sandy (at least the ones we’ve been to) in England. You definitely can’t go barefoot there!
Over 45,000 casualties. I can't even fathom that. It seems so unreal, my goodness.
Anyway.... the ankle thing sure is taking its sweet time to heal! My daughter sprained hers two months ago and it's still not healed. But volleyball season has started so she's wearing her ankle braces and making the best of it. Not sure it's ever going to fully heal - so I totally understand the shoe thing!

That's pretty much what they're made up of.

Do you have any sandy beaches around you?
Yes, there's a huge stretch of coastline in east Kent that's home to miles of sandy beaches. I worked there for 15 years. You can imagine how crowded and chaotic it was in the summer months. I think the next set of sandy beaches are down towards Bournemouth maybe - a long distance from here anyway.

I think I'll be Ok with them. They're old favourites.

They are such an iconic sight, although we think of them perhaps differently to you guys. I always think of the songs from the Second World War - blue birds over the white cliffs of Dover, that sort of thing. I always imagine how those returning from the war or from battle must have felt to see those cliffs. I bet it was really emotional. So every time I see them, I feel sad because of the history attached to them, if that makes sense?

I know. It's the population of a small town, isn't it?

I was warned that it will take a year for it to be fully healed. A bit different to the "couple of weeks" the surgeon talked about!

I think it will, she just needs to give it time and be patient, but I can imagine it's difficult at that age.
