A Magical voyage across the pond LIVE UPDATE 9/30 - Page 32 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Bonine has the active ingredient of meclizine. I went onto Amazon.com and got a bottle of generic meclizine (brand name of "Rugby") tablets - 100 tablets for about a tenner including postage. These are what I used on the cruise last year and they worked perfectly, they kicked in with immediate effect, were chewable and raspberry flavoured, and didn't cause drowsiness at all. I loved them, and will definitely take them again - as soon as I began to feel any effects from the end of the hurricaine we were sailing through last October, I chewed one of these and they were just brilliant.
Although it is undoubtedly too late for you to get any for this cruise, something to bear in mind for the future, perhaps!

Watch, you'll return from your trip to find the Quebec cruise documents in your mail.

I can’t wait to see your pirate night pictures! I have always thought about getting costumes, but all we have so far is Mike’s Capt Jack Sparrow hat.
Love the idea of the DVC group pic!
Hoping for smooth seas for you.

Oh that's brilliant - thanks for sharing that. As you say, good to know for future cruises...

I hope so! It will be a wonderful end to 18 nights on board the Magic.
Pre-trip report – part thirty three: the packing starts!
With less than two weeks until we board, packing has now commenced! I had an hour or so working on the massive pile of clothes and other items that we’d set aside to take with us. I must admit I was pretty daunted when I started, but by the end of it, about 80-90% of my stuff was done. As for Mark? Yes well… he hadn’t done anything. I gave in the next morning and packed nearly everything that he’d brought downstairs, as I felt sorry for it still sitting on the floor…
We’re taking three cases with one inside the other and that feels about right for everything that needs to go in. At least I don’t have to worry, at this stage of the vacation, about how many cases we’re taking and what they weigh. We’ll also have some items, particularly wine that won’t be going into any suitcase that goes on to a plane, as they’ll have magically disappeared by the time we get to that point in our vacation…
I figured it was about time that I had a look at the weather forecast to see if we were taking the right things or not. Generally, it looks as if temperatures during the day will be in the mid to high 60s, which is probably T-shirts and jeans weather for me, and during the night, temperatures generally dipping to the high 40s or low 50s. However, there are some notable exceptions to that. At the moment, it’s saying that it will be hot (low 80s) and humid when we dock in New York City and, on the second cruise, we’ll have some days where the temperatures will only get into the low 50s and overnight, the temperatures will plummet to the low 30s. Yikes! At the moment, there’s not much rain in the forecast, which is at least good news…
I reviewed what was still to pack and decided that I’d been ridiculously over-optimistic with some items and decided I must have grabbed them during our heatwave a few weeks ago. I felt I didn’t need my sarong or short sleeved cardigan and I’ve now added a pair of gloves, hat and snood to the suitcases. However, crops and a vest top will still be going with me. I’ll probably wear my cropped leggings around the ship and I can wear my cropped trousers in New York City. That does not sound like a jeans day right now!
I got to the stage where I was just about done with packing, then the weekly grocery order arrived. That was a relief, as I needed some more Ziploc bags for all the various liquids we’re taking – things like mouthwash, shampoo and conditioner, then other things needed to go into bags, like teabags, tumble dryer sheets and washing machine tablets, so those are all done and packed now.
I went to get our travel insurance and I was a bit annoyed with myself that I couldn’t find the documents. As I said to Mark, I knew we were insured, as I clearly remembered the call to the insurance company where I’d taken it out and I could find the payment for it on the credit card. The problem turned out to be that they’d sent it by post, whereas in 2017, the same company had emailed everything to me. Oh and the fact I’d put it in the wrong folder didn’t help…
Now I don’t know why this happened, but originally I had the idea of going to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Complex in New York City when we arrive there, as it’s very close to the port. That idea went out of my mind completely and I forgot about it. I think I became obsessed with the idea of just getting off the Magic and getting back on as quickly as we could. However, someone posted about it in one of the Facebook groups and I asked Mark if he wanted to go. At first, he said but then I told him to have a look at the site, as I figured it would be just up his street and he quickly changed his mind when he saw the site.
We’ve decided that we’ll double check with Disney guest services once we’re on board that there’s no reason why we can’t do this, but I can’t see why not. We might as well go and enjoy our day in New York City and see something we haven’t seen before. We did toy with the idea of doing a Circle Line sightseeing cruise, as that’s very close as well and it opens at 9:00am, whereas Intrepid only opens at 10:00am, but when I looked at their website, their one hour cruise, which is the only one we’d be able to fit in, would only take us to the sights we’d be seeing on board the Magic, so we couldn’t see any point.
Someone did ask whether the behind the scenes tour of Aladdin was being offered and told us how amazing that was. Yes, it is being offered, but it doesn’t work for those of us who are on back to back cruises. It’s only offered the day before you cruise or the afternoon you cruise in. It’s a real shame, as I would have loved to have done that. Oh well. These things happen….
