Halloween, Hawaii and holiday celebrations - the Hawaii section part 3 COMPLETED - Page 31 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Very cool show. I'm guessing better than your average Waikiki Luau tourist trap show. I, too, am surprised at how many people are suddenly at the resort! They haven't been in the pool area recently....

Definitely a different scene with all the people by the time the pre-show started. What an entertaining way to learn some more history, too. I was snickering from the moment you said the guys could really shake their things.

Unless of course it attracts locals as well... There are some properties in Ko Olina itself and there's no reason why people couldn't come here just to see the show from anywhere on the island - all they'd have to pay is the parking for a couple of hours.

Haven't had much of a chance to comment so far (except to remind you that YES you can get Dole Whips at the plantation!), but everything is looking so wonderful! You certainly had some adventures on the other islands (good and bad), and it looks like you've managed to see quite a bit of Hawaii. I can't believe it's almost time for you to leave! You're making me want to be in Hawaii right now!!!

We certainly did - and I'm glad we got to see so much, as all the islands we visited were beautiful and well worth a visit.

Oh don't talk about leaving. I cannot begin to tell you how long I put off working on our leaving day, as I didn't want to relive it again. I want to go back as well....

Monday 11 November – part ten: the highlight of the show!
Then Uncle introduced us to what was the highlight of the show – a duo of ukulele players called Heart and Soul, also known as Mike and TJ I believe. These guys were just amazing. I am not particularly a fan of ukuleles, mainly because up until this evening, I didn’t think it was a particularly versatile instrument, and there wasn’t much you could do with it.
Well, how wrong can you be? These guys were amazing, and the ukuleles ended up being used more like guitars than anything else. I’m struggling with some of the songs they played, as I recognised them, but couldn’t place them, but there was a snatch of Yankie Doodle Dandy in there, and I definitely remember the Wipeout. They got the biggest round of applause of the night, and rightly so. I think I could watch a show from these guys on their own, they were that good.
Then we were into the finale dance…
The cast took their bows…
… but of course it wouldn’t be a Disney show without characters, right? We’d been waiting for them throughout the show, and I was now beginning to wonder whether they would actually appear, but of course they did – the whole range of characters you can find here, and trust me, there aren’t many of them. It’s literally just Mickey, Minnie, Chip and Dale, Goofy, and Stitch, and that’s it.
That’s one criticism I do have here, I was expecting more characters – Donald, Daisy and Lilo, given that she’s Hawaiian, as a bare minimum, and it really surprised me that they weren’t here. And guys I know we’ve discussed this already in the earlier segments of the trip report, but please bear in mind this was written at the time – i.e. mid November 2013 Maybe it’s something that will grow in time, but given that the resort’s been open for a couple of years, I doubt it. To me, without more characters, and a few more Photopass photographers out and about, Photopass is never going to work here. We’d talked about how they could offer private Photopass sessions, as I think they do (or certainly did) at the various Disney World resorts. Now an hour with a photographer, getting lots of shots of us around the resort, that’s something I’d pay for the CD of.
Anyway, the characters did a dance routine, with the audience encouraged to join in. We joined in by snapping photos…
They went into a second dance, but we looked at each other and decided to head back to the room. The whole Starlit Hui had been a lot of fun, and we’d really enjoyed it. I’d recommend it to anyone who comes to stay at Aulani, although we both agreed that we felt we got more out of it from seeing it later in our stay, as we understood more of the references to both Aulani and Oahu in the various songs. It was a good way to round off our final night here.
With that, we headed back to the room, getting a few final photos of the resort at night.
Public telephones with a menehune on top!
When we got back to the room, it was the sad task of packing. We started with one case, piling in there everything that we shouldn’t need again this vacation, and it’s pretty full already. I’m not too worried (at this stage anyway!) about the weight of our cases, given that they weren’t that full or heavy when we flew out here… but we’ll see what happens in the morning.
I did say to Mark that, wonderful as it has been to put down roots for so long in one hotel (I don’t remember the last time we did that with a hotel ), it makes the packing all the more painful…
The weather today was hot and sunny, albeit quite windy, with temperatures in the high 80s. The best thing today was the Starlit Hui. The worst thing today was Mark falling over and hurting himself. Today we tried going to the Starlit Hui And the result was it was a lot of fun. The most magical moment today was seeing all the memorials at the National MemorialCemetery of the Pacific on Veterans’ Day and remembering the sacrifices these people had made for us over the years.
What a great show! Glad you enjoyed it!
It is a bummer about the characters, you would think that is something very simple to rectify - as well as the PP photographer - what a great place to do sessions.......they are missing out there for sure

Glad you enjoyed the show! It does seem like a perfect thing to do on your last night. Do they hold the show if it rains? I thought the same thing about Photopass when I saw Aulani as an option on the site. Unless they had photographers at the pools, beach and meals, like the Shutters photogs do on DCL, how would it be worth it?
