As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

How sad the food isn't consistently good at the resort. You'd think by now they'd have some of the kinks worked out. I don't understand the wait staff, just standing around. That's kind of odd as well. Strange evening you had there!
It was a bit weird, and you're right, you'd hope they'd have ironed out all the kinks by now....
I just can't believe the restaurants continue to be so spotty. Not a selling point, that's for sure.
But I would do anything for one of those shaved ices!
I have a robe from DCL that I absolutely love (I'm wearing it now). It was originally white, which I found hard to keep spotless, so I dyed it pink. It's great because the inside is a different fabric from the outside, so it's two-toned now due to how the different fabrics took the dye. Wonder if the Aulani ones are similar to DCL's?

How neat that you dyed it! The dressing gown is definitely two different fabrics for the inside and the outside, so maybe it is a similar style?
Monday 11 November – part nine: this is verging on un-Disney like!
We had a break in the room, and contemplated doing some packing, but as we only had 20 minutes before the Starlit Hui pre-show was about to start, we decided against it. I don’t think either of us really wanted to start that miserable task.
We headed over to the Halawai Lawn at 7:30pm, and remember the shot from earlier on? We couldn’t believe what was there now.
You could sit on bamboo mats, which most people did, or there were chairs, which is what we opted for. You might not be able to make it out, but there were also artisans around, doing things with the kids, and you could get your photo taken under the Aulani symbol with one of the hula dancers from the show. We couldn’t believe how packed it was, and it was a lot busier by the time the show began half an hour later.
The pre-show consisted of the hula dancers teaching moves to some of the kids….
… and we also had some Hawaiian musicians. The girl was absolutely amazing – she could hold a note for, well I don’t know for how long, but think of Bill Withers on “Lovely Day” and double it, and you start to get the idea. We were all just blown away by how she did that.
The show is compered by “Uncle” (remember it was Aunty’s breakfast celebration at the character breakfast buffet at Makahiki?) but really he doesn’t actually play that big a role in it.
I have to say this shot does look slightly rude, given it’s a woman in front of him…
The show proper gets underway with some hula dancing – and you can tell how chilly it was tonight, as look at what the guys are wearing underneath their grass skirts. I’m sure they don’t do that every night!
Then they got the kids involved with the dance they’d been teaching them earlier…
At one point, I turned around, and the Cast Member who was standing behind us was even doing the movements, which I thought was really neat, as she wasn’t really a part of the show from there, but she was still participating. I love that about Disney.
Then we were introduced to our musicians and the fabulous singer who could hold those long notes…
… and it was over to her for the next musical number, complete with the guys in grass skirts and long trousers (pants)… As you can see, they had sticks to beat together for this number.
Then we went on to hear the tale of fishing in Hawaii, where the female dancers were essentially the fish…
Halfway through the male dancers arrived, complete with their flaming torches, and it was explained to us that this is how they used to fish in years gone by. It was a history lesson without you even realising it!
Next we went on this dance, and I cannot remember for the life of me what this is supposed to represent but I can tell you one thing, these guys really can shake their things! My goodness, the thrusts they made during this were verging on un-Disney like!
Then it was explained to us how birds were important in fishing, as the fishermen know where the fish were, as you’d find birds circling above them…
It was a beautiful part of the show to watch, and the singer here was so expressive:
Looks like a very entertaining and also informative show! I know some shows of this type you hear about in the islands are pretty tacky, but this one looks like it showcases some real talent and is thoughtfully put together. It is funny to all of a sudden see so many people around as your other photos show a nearly empty Aulani!

It was and I think that's what we'd expect from Disney...
