A 40th celebration to end the world! THREAD 2 COMPLETE AGAIN 4/27 - Page 30 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Careful Cheryl Coop's Hubby Chuck might get upset you didn't do an adequet quality control check on the Zebra Domes his favorite appy and entree at Boma
I couldn't agree with you more about the Studios having the worst dining selection, especially for counter service. You really did show some restraint at Boma! I need to remember to stop when I'm comfortably full.

Yes! Appy, entree and dessert!

Glad that Mark was feeling better!! Thanks for sharing the lights. I don't think I will ever make it there in November/December time frame. What is this Purple cat I keep reading about???

If I may -
When Disney bought the Osborne lights - the Osbornes packed up all of the "Christmas" lights but mistakenly included a purple cat from their Halloween collection. Disney puts up all of the lights that they were given - including the purple cat. They move the location and it has become a kind of "hide and seek" game for people to find the purple cat. The CM's know where it is and will give you hints but won't tell you outright.
As far as I know, that's exactly what happens. Don't forget that Thanksgiving is of course a major celebration just a month earlier, so one day off for Christmas perhaps isn't such a big deal after that.
I'm guessing you guys probably got Boxing Day from the UK originally, but I must admit I didn't know Canada celebrated Boxing Day, but it makes sense...
Alright then, here is another random question, since we are on the topic...we celebrate Thanksgiving in October with a 3 day weekend - no big deal, but families usually gather for dinner if they are a reasonable distance apart. Christmas is our big holiday for families to travel distances and gather together. Is there a similar autumn holiday in Britain...a harvest festival or something of the sort? Is Christmas your big holiday? From what I understand (mostly from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Thanksgiving is actually a bigger holiday in the USA and family's travel to be together for that one over Christmas. (just curious)
And, definitely yes, we got Boxing Day from Britain and celebrate Victoria Day with a long weekend in May each year and I grew up singing "God Save the Queen" every morning in school along with "Oh Canada" and the Lord's Prayer (only we didn't sing the prayer).

That's always been my understanding - that Thanksgiving is almost a bigger holiday in the States than Christmas.
We don't have any form of celebration in the fall. We have Christmas and New Year, then Easter (we get a four day weekend, with Good Friday and Easter Monday off) and then there are three other Bank Holiday weekends, where we get the Monday off to have a three day weekend. Those are at the start of May, end of May and the end of August. That's pretty much it for national holidays over here, so Christmas is definitely our biggest holiday. We always have Christmas Day and Boxing Day off work. If either day falls on a weekend, then we get another day in lieu of those, so if Christmas Day is a Saturday and Boxing Day is a Sunday, we'll also have the 27 and 28 December off.

Oh wow, we never sang God Save the Queen every day, although I always stand for it whenever I hear it - something my parents always did.
Friday 14 December – part one: will we get into the new Captain Jack Sparrow attraction?
When I woke up, it was a positive sight, as Mark told me it was the first time in three days that he’d actually felt hungry. Now that had to be a good sign!
I headed down to the Mara, and got us both a fruit cup, as the bakery items really didn’t inspire me at all. I do think the food selection here has gone down dramatically.
We had our breakfast, and headed out, a little later than I’d have liked, as I was hoping to be at the Studios for opening. I wanted to do one thing here, and that was see the new Captain Jack Sparrow attraction. I’d heard horror stories about 60 minute waits, and I didn’t want to experience that.
We raced through the park, with me grabbing some photos as we went…
… and we lucked out. By the time we made it to Captain Jack Sparrow, I was delighted to see that there was no wait! The doors opened after a minute, and in we went. You have a quick couple of minutes’ pre-show, where it’s explained that they’re looking for new members of Jack’s crew, and this will test whether we’ve got what it takes..
Then you head into the main show area. I really wasn’t sure what to expect, whether this was the only part of the show (it is) or whether we’d see something in here, then move on to another section. The area was beautifully themed when we arrived. We were told that there was plenty of space over to the right hand side, and we headed that way, but to be honest, it wasn’t the greatest of views, as you’ll see from the later photos when Jack comes out…
We had the talking skull (which Jack referred to in his very dry and witty way! ) guide us through things, telling us first that we needed to find the key to the treasure chest. The reason? Because Davy Jones’ crew were coming to get us. There were skeletons all over the place that suddenly appeared around the room. It was all very well done, and I was absolutely blown away by it. I took the time to look around the room, rather than just straight ahead, and sure enough, the skeletons were everywhere.
After this, we faced an attack by the Kraken, and if I remember right, we had to holler “aaaargh” at it to scare it off. Guess what? It worked!
Still the challenges weren’t done. We also got a mermaid who appeared on screen. Our talking skull friend told us we didn’t have a problem unless she started to sing… well you can guess what happened next! We were told to put our hands over our ears, and then we were told to stomp our feet to drown her out, and when that worked, that was it, we’d passed that challenge too!
It was finally at this point that we got to see Captain Jack, and I must admit I was surprised at how long we waited to see him. I will say here that the view from the right really wasn’t that great, as Jack was hidden behind the railings of the ship, which was a great shame. Despite that, I loved the way that Johnny Depp reprised the role, with lots of references to the bottle he was holding being empty and how did that happen We also loved the reference to my “talking skull friend”, which was good, and if you think about it, it was a bit surreal to have something like that…
This was a lot of fun, but there is absolutely no way I’d wait 60 minutes for it. It just isn’t worth it, but it is a fun addition, and if it’s a walk-on, or there’s very little wait, I’d go for it.
Thanks for the detailed description of the Jack Sparrow show, Chez! I definitely wouldn't want to wait for an hour to see this but we'll see if we can get in with less wait than that.
So did you enter the theater from the left and were asked to proceed all the way to the right?

We entered from the back. From memory, the entrance was on the right. I suspect we were with a lot of people who knew what was coming, as we were near the back and everyone headed for the left, so I think they knew where Jack would be.
Thanks for all the great information. I missed that there was a new Captain Jack attraction. Good to know. Now we know not to wait 60 minutes for it too! Your TR has given me great tips for our upcoming vacation.
