2017 WDW Passporter Guide [multiple updates with info on LIVE! Guides!] - Page 3 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Okay, well, I feel a little better about this now that I know pages will print to fit my Deluxe binder. Thanks for that clarification, Ginger.
Could something be done to dull the glaring white pages? I find them really hard to tolerate visually just glancing at the sample. A light shade such as surrounds the post composing window would be much easier on the eyes, IMO.

Glad I could help!
Are you talking about the pages of the Guide on screen? I'm guessing they have to be white to translate to paper better--you wouldn't want to use all the ink necessary to give the pages a yellow background, for instance, when you printed them.
Is turning down the brightness of your monitor an option that would help you? I've honestly never had a problem with the white pages myself (although I am very suggestible, and I probly will now, so thank-you-very-much-Dot! ).
Is there a way you can make an option within the guides for printing a version that is formatted to fit into the deluxe binder, with minimal cutting and paper waste, for those of us who finally bought the deluxe binder for our last trip (after many spiral bound)and were looking forward to using it for our future disney vacations?😉 Maybe 2 book pages per printed page (I checked, it works) so that each piece of paper needs only to be cut in half and mark where holes need to be punched. I know we can figure it out ourselves but it would make a big difference to those people who are less tech savvy or busy mom's who just don't have the time to figure this all out. And please, please bring back the pockets!!
I think you may be able to tell your printer to print two book-pages per sheet of paper, once it's in PDF form and you're ready to print. I'm going to go check that right now and will let you know.
I'm pretty sure the pages would have to shrink some to fit--since the width is 5.5" and printer paper is 11", there still has to be some size of margin around the outside, since printers generally don't print edge-to-edge.

That was a great question & idea, by the way, ecmommy!
Okay, I checked and, at least in my version of Adobe PDF and with my printer, you can print two book-pages onto one sheet of paper. You'll want to be aware, though, that some of the book pages may flow onto two pages when printed. This is because digital pages don't have to be as short as printed pages, so we were able to add as much detail as we needed on every page.
You won't have guides for where to punch the holes, by the way.
Here's a screen shot of how I set up the print to do two pages per sheet of paper. You can see how the printed page will look, too. (I accidentally picked "Vertical Reversed" instead of "Vertical," so it shows the second page first in this shot). I had to select "More Options," then "Multiple" under "Page Sizing." Each printer driver will have a somewhat different dialog box for printing, by the way, but this is what mine does:

I hope this helps!
Will this work for double-sided? I noticed you didn't have that marked.... Could you try and let us know?
Ginger - Perhaps if we could even have a sample page and instructions for how to print/cut/placement of holes for untechy people such as myself somewhere in the online material. If we have 1 page with the cuts/holes marked we can use it as a template for the others.

I tried for you. And it printed on both sides, but not in a way that would work for your binder. I printed pages 1-4...the front has pages 1 & 2, the back has 3 & 4. So if you tried to cut them out and put them in a binder, you would end up with page 1, then page 4 (which is on the back of page 1), then page 2 & page 3.
If you were printing one page per sheet, they'd be in the same order when you printed double-sided.

That's a good idea! Maybe Jennifer will do a template page somewhere near the PDF instructions. Instructions for printing might vary too much among printers to be able to write generic instructions, but I don't know any reason why we couldn't put a screen shot like the one I put here, along with the associated instructions.
For the hole placement: I might be missing something, but if you already have a binder, can't you use a page from it for your template for that?
the more I play with my Cruise live guide the more I like it. I have been able to make book marks, notes and jump all over the book with single clicks. And I can print just the section I want if I want a paper copy. YES I still prefer a hard print book but I'm finding it isn't that hard to deal with. And since changes are highlighted in green it is very easy to find new information.
As far as family members being able to mark what they are interested in, that can still be done too. I just found that option today!!!
Jennifer has done a great job with the cruise guide so I can only imagine how wonderful WDW live guide will be.
like I said previously I just wish I could make it kindle friendly not just a PDF on a kindle. but I really do like it
Thank you so much GingerJ for all of your help. I will have to see how it all comes together when I'm ready to start printing. I like the idea of a template with places marked where to punch holes for the deluxe binder, Cattailmarsh. I file my books away after my trip as mementos of our trip. It would be so much easier to have a template I could print out, maybe listed with the worksheets you have available. Although, I think most of the worksheets themselves show the correct formatting and punch placements.
Trying to look at the new and exciting aspects of this new system, I love the idea of being able to make it so personalized and being able to carry it on my phone sounds great (if it's big enough for my failing eyes to read ) I can still print out worksheets I need and the price is good. But please, please ,please, keep offering the pockets. I can't think of a way to replace them as they are soo unique and well organized. I've even bought sets to use for other vacations to non-disney places because they are so useful.

Reason: Typo

Hope that all made sense!
Once I get the 2017, I'm going to try printing only the odds, two up per sheet then turn the paper over and print the evens. Might work? If anyone tries it, let me know the results?
Interesting because there was a sample of the live guide just as there was for the print book. As far as using data in the parks, it wouldn't use any data if you download it to ibooks
My complaint with the live guide, and maybe someone here can help me with this, I don't like the PDF format that loaded to my kindle. It there a way to make it read like a book on the kindle platform?

I didn't see any kind of a sample, but I was thinking more of "test phase" - either a limited use/time - say 2 weeks to see if it works for you or not. For me, paying money for something I don't know works for me or not is just a waste of money.
And my phone doesn't have unlimited storage, so downloading the entire book probably isn't feasible for me - not unless I delete all my apps and pictures first. And I certainly don't want to be staring at my phone all day. I'd have a migraine before I even got started.

It would have been nice to know that no more print editions were going to be done - I could have ordered the Deluxe edition and then just created my own refills. I certainly don't want to be hauling an 8 1/2 x 11 binder around with pages I've printed. Oh well, I will try to find a new print guide that serves my needs, or at least try to create my own pocket pages for future trips.

A half size three ring binder that holds 5 1/2" W x 8 1/2" T paper makes for pages that are just slightly smaller than the Passporter's pages. As for a print guide I really like, "the easy guide to your Walt Disney World visit" and if you buy it from Amazon it's not only eligible for Prime shipping but you get the Kindle version free.
Jennifer has worked hard to make all these things work together seamlessly. I've been working with some of them for over a year now, and it's becoming a really neat electronic way to plan a trip.
Unfortunately, I don't have a year to learn a whole new way to plan my vacation. I work 2 jobs and go to school.
