The Official #$@% Cancer Trip: It's All About Mom PTR/Live-TR - Page 3 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Will she have her compression garment(s) by the time you leave? If not, I personally would not fly without them. You could either drive or take the train (regular or auto train). If you take the regular train, you could get Quicksilver to pick you up from the station or take a cab to your resort.
FYI - It took me a week to get my sleeves after measurement, and mine were off the shelf ones, not custom.
I hope you have a great trip. I've been wanting to plan one for myself (had my bilateral mastectomy July 2014 and implant exchange Dec 2014, luckily no chemo required), but it just hasn't worked out yet. My sis and I are doing our #$@% Cancer cruise in January though . She was diagnosed before me, right after we got back form our Sept 2013 cruise.
Pixies for your Mom! My Dad has had lymphedema in his left arm since the late 80s after the removal of the lymph node under his arm and has flown many, many times (most to Disney twice a year)! I hope it all works out!
PassPorter's Free-Book to Walt Disney World It’s hard to believe anything is free at Walt Disney World; but there are actually a number of things you can get or do for little to no cost. Get this popular e-book free of extra charges when you join the PassPorter's Club for as little as $4.95. So just checking in........Understand that you have some worries 'cause I know I would! As long as you are both flexible and understanding, it will all work out. The most important thing is that the two of you will be together at WDW; everything else is "bonus"!
agreed! and yes, we both plan to be VERY flexible. me more so than her, i believe. which is fine.

Btw, by "not comfortable" I mean exactly that--just enough of an annoyance that you're aware of some mild discomfort.
Wearing compression garments as recommended along with professional lymphedema massages weekly for a few months was all I needed to get to management where only self massage and wearing my sleeve and gauntlet were necessary.
At four years from diagnosis, I can often wear just the sleeve and go for a full day now and then without it if not doing anything requiring lifting anything heavier than clothing.
Lymphedema may be a vague annoyance at most with careful attention to what her "onc" and certified lymphedema massage therapist recommend for her condition.
It is very manageable with appropriate treatment.
that's all very good to know! she went into this super not wanting to get lymphedema FROM flying. she did not expect to get it before even getting in the air. but she's taking everything as it comes rather well, i'd say. i will pass this info along to her. she will be relieved to know that it won't be a major life issue!
I understand your worries, especially about your mom's stamina for the trip down, but if the plans seem like too much, just cut back. If you end up resting in the room for the rest of the day after arrival, it'll be nice for both of you to be together. It's nice to try for the higher level of plans, but just be casual about keeping to the schedule and feel free to let things go. I've traveled solo needing wheelchair assistance many times, and have only had an issue once, at Heathrow. Usually the airline staff is especially attentive when you're on your own, and with your mom's friendly personality they'll probably all be wanting to help her!
oh, i'm totally cool with letting things go! i think this whole trip will have the theme 'let it go'!
and thanks for the wheelchair at airports input! also, thank you for your most recent trip report! it was recommended to me by others, so i spent an afternoon reading it. you kind of rock, you know.

With regard to the lymphedema, just follow her med onc/surg onc's advice. It's not a long flight, so that's good.
With regard to her having grand plans, that may all be part of her need to think she's 'better'. I would guess that she'll figure out she can't do quite that much once she's there. I'd recommend not doing any 'I told you so' (although I don't think you would - you are Super Daughter). Maybe you could gently encourage a break - that you need some down time and want to enjoy your awesome room at BW & GF. Or look for cues and suggest sitting down to have a snack if she looks tired.
Love your list of what you're looking forward to!!! Enjoy all of it! As for the age of Soarin', that became more apparent to me when we did Flyin' Over Canada in Vancouver, the Canadian version. The screen was so much better, the picture was so much crisper. But you know what, it made me want to ride Soarin', as that is the version that is 'home' to me!
there's a flyn' over canada in vancouver??!! i had no idea. i love vancouver. more reason to go back.
and thanks for the perspective on why she maybe wants to do some things on her own. i will completely keep that in mind (particularly if/when i find out i can't get on standby!)
and i will never 'i told you so!'

I am so with you on the "adult children would prefer it if their mothers inconvenienced them". My mother is the same way!
i know, right?!?

thank you for the prayers and the pixies. and yay for your sister cruise! january is right around the corner. i hope you have an amazing time. you both deserve it (2014 was a not great year, huh? that's how i feel about this year. for new years, i'm going to throw a 'good riddance, 2015!' party!)
and yes, i believe she already received her sleeve. i'm inquiring right now (like in a separate text window as i type this!)

I totally get it. I'm worried about Chuck and his stamina for illness reasons as well. I think it's hard but we have to just let them decide their own energy levels and go with it. You're a good daughter - enjoy the positives!

No it was not. I didn't mention that my mother passed away in November between my two surgeries because I didn't want to bum you out 2010 - 2014 was sucky to be honest (July 2010 my sis's DH died, Nov 2010 my mother diagnosed w/ Multiple Myeloma, Sept 2013 my sis diagnosed w/ BC, June 2014 I was diagnosed w/ BC, Nov 2014 my mother died).
2015 has been better but still not great. I'm ready for a GREAT year! I'm also ready to join you via computer on this trip!

oh my! i thought my week was bad (nana passed away, mom diagnosed with cancer, i lost my job--those last two on the same day.) yikes! you are totally due for a great year. here's to 2016!
and yes, i will definitely be live sharing the trip. both here and on instagram, because i have an instagram addiction.
Signing on! Never been to the hula show, but if you can keep your eyes open long enough to go to the new Grogg Grotto afterwards, that would be AWESOME!!! Reviews I've read is that there is a very hefty wait to get seating, but after 11pm, it really opens up.

I have not heard of this grotto. But I will definitely check it out! We are staying at the GF that night, so it's not like there will be too much of a commute 'home'. Thanks for the tip!

I think she might be talking about Trader Sam's at the Poly?
I think she might be talking about Trader Sam's at the Poly?
Yep. Already looked it up and forwarded the DFB post to mom. She said we can stop by. They have non alcoholic drinks (and sausage on a stick--she currently can only really enjoy sausage). So yay!
Tracy glad to hear that your mom is doing much better and feels well enough for another trip to the Bubble with her daughter. I am a bit disappointed we wont be regaled with any tales of her practicing for the high hurdles at the Penn Games this time but we will keep her in our prayers for future trips
