Who's Ready For An Awesome August Adventure?! August 2014 PTR - Page 3 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I guess I should go get myself a ticker now too! Tomorrow I can make FP+ reservations, and I have no clue what parks we are doing or anything! I have never booked a trip so close before. LOL.
Hey Heather! Long time no see!! I guess I didn't realize you were going to WDW this year!

Welcome!
Have you ever gone in August before? We really like it. I never thought I'd say that!! We just take it easy and make the best of the heat. It makes it much easier since it's not all that busy!

So, when exactly are we going and where are we staying? And how are we getting there?
If you’ve looked at my Tickers you have probably been able to figure most of that out… Maybe!
As many of us do, I have changed my vacations plans a few times. We had originally planned on 9 nights at the Polynesian. But, over time things got changed a bit! We threw a quickie January 2014 trip in there. And then all the construction going on at the Polynesian.
We ended up making the trip 8 nights, Saturday to the following Sunday. And as much as I love the Poly and was willing to stay there no matter what, we eventually decided to do a split stay. Four nights at the Poly and four nights at the BWI. The best of both worlds, right?!
But, when they took the GF pool use away from the Poly guests during the Volcano pool closure, we were out. That was the last straw for us. (And for many of my clients)
So, we are now booked four nights at the Grand Floridian and four nights at the Boardwalk Inn. We have only stayed at the GF for two nights, in December 2012, before moving to the Poly for the remainder of that trip. We liked the GF, but didn’t LOVE it, like we do the Poly. But at the time the GF DVC was under construction, the GF courtyard pool was closed, and all the beach access was blocked off. So, I’m sure it will be much better this time.
Recently it has started to be rumored that the Poly pool closure may get pushed back to after Labor Day…. Nothing official on that yet. If that does happen, I am guessing we will switch back to the Poly for our first four nights! I am okay with sticking with the GF, but I know I will get outvoted!
So, we are currently booked Aug 23-27 at the GF and Aug 27-31 at BWI.
Grand Floridian (December 2012):
Polynesian (December 2012):
Boardwalk Inn (November 2010):
So, what are some of your favorite Disney Resorts?!
As for how we are getting there, we always fly! Somehow 20 hours each way in the car doesn’t sound like much of a vacation to me!! Airfare is usually a huge pain. You know the game – do I buy it now? What if it goes up? What if it goes down? What if my dates change? Etc. Well, this time we had enough SW Visa points for all 4 of our round trip flights!! I think I paid $10 in fees to book airfare this time, awesome!
We have a morning flight down on the 23rd and a morning flight back on the 31st.

Woohoo on that flight score! I'm like you, LOVE the Poly but "meh" on the GF. I don't hate staying there, it just doesn't quite do it for me! But I've grown to love the Boardwalk more and more as I've gotten older. Although some things about it do still irk me, the location just can't be beat
Congrats on the great flights. When we fly, it's on SW rewards. A perk of Dh traveling so much. I'm sure the hotel choices will work out and you will have a great time.

Yes, sorry - I posted on the other thread. It was a spur of the moment decision based on how well we were doing with everything going on here. I only feel a smidge guilty about it. Mostly excited!
I need to get your thoughts on OKW again! That's where we'll be!
Congrats on the free flights!!! Can't go wrong there!!!
I was wondering how all the construction at the Poly was making people decide on staying there.
Love all the pics of the 3 resorts. I just don't know about GF, while it is absolutely gorgeous, I just always feel totally out of place there.

Yeah, the Poly is by far our favorite!! Just love it here. I'm not so sure we are going to feel the same way once all is said and done.
We love the BWI too! I know so many people don't like that clown slide, but we love it! It is DS12's favorite!

We were talking about flying for our Jan. trip, but we opted to drive the 18 hours instead and then possibly break it up along the way.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the pics.
We really could drive it. We have relatives in Charlotte, so we could stop and stay overnight for free!! But, I just can't stand being in the car that long! I know lots of people do it and don't mind it at all.

Thanks! We only had the free flights because we opened a credit card with them. It sure was nice!
I'm sure we will have a great time no matter where we end up staying!

We liked OKW. Didn't fall in love or anything, but we enjoyed it. Our stay there was very brief, only 2 nights. It's kind of a cross between a mod and a deluxe, leaning more on the mod side. But the rooms are huge! Just make sure to get a room close to the main area. We didn't and we were VERY far from everything and right beside a noisy 4 lane highway.
Very close to DTD, so that is nice!

Thank you! I stuck it out at the Poly as long as I could. So sad!

Thanks!
Most people bailed on the Poly when they announced the pool closure. But some stuck it out, like myself. Then when they took away use of the GF pool during the Poly pool closure and offered a pass to BB instead, almost everyone was out.
Glad you enjoyed the pics! I think most people have that perception of the GF at first. We didn't feel out of place at all and we have 2 boys!! The kids actually really enjoyed it a lot. Maybe because we had friends staying in the room next to us, but they had a great time! Things like construction and no beach access didn't bother them, like it did me.
