what to buy a 10 yr old boy for Christmas? - Page 3 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Go to the TRU website sand type swimmers in the search box. I see them for 39.99.
Ooooh, you're right, they are on sale on the website! I wonder if they are on sale in the store as well. I think I'll check tomorrow. (I would just order it online, but we are going out of town next week and I don't want it to come while we are gone.) Thanks for the tip!

I saw those Air swimmers here but they are $59.99 I believe in Canada. You have to order them from ToysRUs too.
Thanks for the links Ashli too.
I am now thinking of a digital camera. I hope he won't loose it
My dd won a MP3 player today This is our biggest win yet. I have never won anything other than a stuffed Reindeer and that was 25+ yrs ago. Ds was pretty green with envy since this one has a recorder and a video player on it.
Wow, thanks everyone for the suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just love when a thread can help others with ideas too Now I should start a thread about my mother and gifts for her-she is another difficult one LOL-everyone here has such great ideas!!!!
My dd is 10 (will be 11 this month) and I bought her a digital camera last Christmas. She broke it within a few months.... And she is seemingly responsible; I won't be replacing it for several years..... I was very ill

Keep in mind, that for a 10-year-old, "a digital camera" should not have a three-digit pricetag associated with it.
And you can get a reasonable Canon or Nikon for under $40, if you're willing to buy used. Either of which is entirely suitable for a child's first-ever digital camera, IMO.
If you're willing to go "off-brand", you can get NEW cameras for under $40.

Wow, I would have been upset too!
We bought DS a nice (yes, I mean three-digit-price-tag) digital camera for Christmas last year. He hasn't hurt it at all yet! I guess I should consider myself pretty lucky after hearing everyone's stories of breaking them and losing them!

Says who? I think that's the parent's decision to make. We bought my DS a digital camera that was over $100 when he was 9 and he has taken very good care of it.

Ashli, I agree about not excluding more expensive cameras. One thing may be that the more expensive cameras are easier to use and less frustrating. I also think a good camera might be less likely to be thought of as a toy and thrown in the toy box.
My kids got digital cameras in the old days when they were in the $200-300. range and they were 10, 13, and 15. Other than the fact that they are now dinosaurs, they still should all work.
My kids often had "adult" equipment, tools, etc. but knew that certain items were not toys and initially might need to be used under adult supervision.
I also did not replace things that were lost. If something was lost, the next one was to be bought with the child's own funds. Kids never lost much (although my ex had a way of leaving brand new jackets behind).

A million thanks everyone
All 4 of my kids have digital cameras and I love looking at their pictures. Seeing a kids view of the world is a blast! I even gave all the children in our family disposable ones one year for Christmas. We are forever trying to get pics of my brother smiling or of my dad and brother together. I told each of my nieces and young cousins that whoever got "good" pics of Bro and Dad that I would pay them $1! It was hysterical watching all these little kids stalking these two grown men all Christmas day!!! I had to pay $5 at the end but it was worth it!
Now as for the one that keeps losing his, he is that kind of kid that if things aren't attached they get left behind. He is devastated each time and his tears can break my heart. I won't buy him anymore cameras but he has asked all his friends and relatives for money for his birthday (Tuesday) so he can replace it. I know he will try to take care of it and he has never broken a camera and he definitly gets the full use out of the camera so I would recommend a digital camera for any child. I also thinking getting the Klutz book increased his love of the camera. He is very creative and learning to take funny and out of perspective shots was fun for him. All his cameras have cost under $100 but both of my teens have $150 range cameras.
I also think a good camera might be less likely to be thought of as a toy and thrown in the toy box.

That's always been our M.O. and it's worked well with our now 15 year old son. (He happens to be extremely interested in photography and knows more about out Canon T1i than I do!)
I do, however, disallow it from going to school with him beause it's the kind of thing that would be stolen...
I keep all electronics away from the school. They aren't allowed to take them there. I might look at a reasonable price camera. They are going to be on sale here for Christmas. I will still need to think of something else for him as well, but atleast it is a start. My ds is not the type that breaks toys, but he is forgetful and the kids in his class are not considerate. So, he may want an Ipod (we aren't getting him one til his birthday in June) but he won't be taking it to school anyways.
Great ideas though. Each person knows their kids the best. I am sure there are some 5 yr olds out there who are more responsible with their things than kids who are 14 or 15. That is why it is great to have so many suggestions
DS turns 13 tomorrow. He asked for a PS3 eye. I then found out that you have to get the move remote to go with it.... 6 weeks before Christmas and I just spent $80 on his birthday! On the plus side I now have a whole new selection of video games and accessories I can spend money on!
