A reason for the "No Children" on ECV's - Page 3 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

What makes me mad as fire is when someone back into you, crosses in front of you cutting of your ECV or almost falling in your lap in a WC, is that they blame you, when clearly it was their fault.
In Dec 2008, DH and I were sitting outside of CoP, don't remember why (I was probably trying to find the rest of our group), but I was on my ECV and DH was standing next to me, we were out of the way, some woman backs up and almost lands in my lap, well she turned and started screaming at me. I hadn't moved, I was in shock, I thought she was either going to hit me or DH, we got out of there quickly, and she was still screaming.
If they had to ride in our shoes for just one day, maybe they would understand, but I will never wish that on anyone. I would much rather be at eye level with everyone else and walk along beside DH holding his hand, instead of maneuvering through a crowd all day.

I agree, I wish I could also be at "eye level"
I have had some weird experiences on my scooter, But also some wonderful ones with people that have been very sweet & helpful to me..

It's amazing what kind of equioment parents will let their small children control -- or try to. The OP reminded me of some of the case notes in my torts casebook -- kids have gotten some really interesting injuries when they were allowed to ride on lawn mowers and vacuum cleaners.
My favorite, though, was at the State Fair. A little kid who could barely reach the "floor" was driving the ECV, while the adult, in a full leg cast, walked alongside.
I had to discover the "always make sure it's turned off" lesson the hard way. DBF and I were at DHS for the Star Wars parade, but we'd lingered too long in the special marketplace near ToT, and were told the handicapped area was closed. (There was a space available, and there was no notification on the Times Guide that you had to be there by a certain time, so I don't know why they couldn't just let us in there.) Anyway, the best spot we could find was on the sidewalk behind the handicapped area, but it wasn't a great view. When the parade got near, I stood up on the "floor" of my scooter to try to get a better shot, and it started forward! Oops!!! I'd accidentally leaned against the controls. Fortunately, nobody was in front of me (just a fence around some trees), but now I try to remember to take out the key every time I park my scooter, especially if I'm going to remain seated there!

Oh, yes! I SO agree with everyone's comments about rude people cutting off my scooter, walking right out in front of me, or when I'm moving along with traffic and the person walking in front of me stops out of nowhere and then gives me a dirty look for hitting them (or nearly so)! I swear I think each ECV must come with a cloaking device! (Yes, I'm a Trekkie!)
I also VERY much agree that I'd rather be walking beside my boyfriend. I really miss walking through the parks, holding hands. But I also learned the hard way that I really do need my scooter: last fall I was at Kings Island with my younger brother, and eventually I could tell it needed a charge. We plugged it in and I just hobbled around with my cane for about an hour, but by the time we retrieved it, my ankle was in so much pain I knew I never could've made it through the whole day without an ECV. I hope maybe someday my ankle will heal enough that I can go back to my park-walking days, but sadly, that day has not yet arrived.
We treat the ECV like the motor vehicle it is (just like a car or a riding mower). Turn it off, take the key out when we stop for a meal or a ride. Take hands off the accelerator control when stopped. Look left, right, and over the shoulder before moving, not just in front. And never let a child ride. My husband was an ICU/ER/flight nurse for years and he saw some nasty injuries from kids falling from mowers and ECVs.
Pushy, rude and clueless people, I have no cure for. We try to cut folks a break and watch out for those who seem to be looking around and likely to wander in front of us, or who have young children walking at some distance from the adults, so we don't accidentally hit them (just like in our car).
I actually saw the exact same thing in DW last week at EPCOT. A man and woman both on the Disney ECV at the same time. And when I was in an ECV in Dec 2009, I got caught in a crowd exiting MK before a Christmas party on our first night in the park. It was my very first time in an ECV and I was having trouble navigating in the crowd and I got the front wheel stuck in the trolley tracks (I had rented from Walker Mobility) right in front of a photopass photographer on Main Street. Instead of helping me get the ECV unstuck, the CM stood there and yelled at me to get the hell out of the way because I was ruining his shot. He stood there berating me for over five minutes. I was nearly in tears. My mom wasn't strong enough to help me get the ECV unstuck from the tracks. Some complete stranger stopped and help us instead of the completely capable CM who was less than 2 feet away.
That must have been horrible for you, Mystic! I'm glad you didn't get hurt. Those tracks are difficult. I try to only cross them at a 90 degree angle. Getting the front wheel stuck in the track must have been so scary for you! Bad, bad CM for yelling at you!
Will keep this in mind. Mom drives an ECV more than not now. My Son Will ride with her when he gets wore out. However they are both every careful, he never touches any thing and when adjusting things she shuts it off. After running over my foot one day. very early in our ECV experience. As so many people Cut her off. When leaving parks we tend to put me on one side of her Dad and the littles behind and my 6ft+ husband On in front as the plow. People can be so rude. it isn't even cut you off it is step right infront of you within inches. Scary really.
