Forums Closed
|
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: Silly ? of the day 6/1/02 Inspired by Dad2jbj\'s "y\'all"
Janet44 & 2Princesses, I'm with you. Jersey Girl, through and through. Yes, we called it Goosey Night. And I've never given anything for a wedding present except a card and check. I don't know if I have any additional sayings (except 'How ya doing?') but I've been told by many non-NJ people that I talk extremely fast! And I shorten everyone's name.

2Princesses and RobbiD and anyone else from NJ: Is Goosey Night just a Bergen/Passaic County thing? What part of NJ are you from and what do you call it?
Most of my wedding gifts were in the form of $$. I opened all the envelopes on my wedding night in the hotel room! We did receive a few "gifts" but I didn't bother opening them until we came back from our honeymoon!
I carry a purse, I wear sneakers and I sit on a couch!

Re: Silly ? of the day 6/1/02 Inspired by Dad2jbj\'s "y\'all"
After all this talk about pop, soda, soft drinks, carbonated beverages, and cokes, I was wondering if anyone has heard of a "wobbly pop"? Self explanatory once you hear what it is. Remember, we call sweet carbonated beverages "pop".
It's a wine, vodka or rum cooler. My fave is Smirnoff Ice (which Winnipeg actually ran out of last summer for 3 or 4 weeks. You had to put your name on a waiting list at the liquor store )

Re: Silly ? of the day 6/1/02 Inspired by Dad2jbj\'s "y\'all"
DW and I are from the south...south side of Chicago that is. When we were down in New Mexico I was asked what part of Texas we were from. When I was asked what made them think that, they said we talked like we were from there. We used the same expressions that they used, and we said yes sir, no sir, etc. etc. They were quite surprised when I said that we were from Illi-noise. To be completely honest "wit youse guys" we grew up with alot of these different sayings. WE had family from all over the Good-ole USA.
See "y'all" later.

Re: Silly ? of the day 6/1/02 Inspired by Dad2jbj\'s "y\'all"
I've never called soda "pop", and Coke, Pepsi, 7-up, whatever is all soda to me. We call the amusement park "Great Adventure" not Six-Flags. When we are taking a trip to the beach, we say that we're going "down the shore".
What does everyone call the night before Halloween?? When I was growing up, it was called "Goosey Night" but since I've moved to Morris County it's called "Mischief Night".
We also have "jug handles" here which (I think) are only found around here. If you are driving down the high-way and you need to make a left turn, what you have to do is get into the right lane, turn right onto the jug handle and go straight across the highway. I was shocked when I visited my friend from Richmond, VA and they just made U-turns or left turns anywhere.
I've also never pumped my own gas - there are gas station attendants that do that!

I grew up in Brooklyn, where a fire hydrant is a Johnny Pump, orange is pronounced are-ange and South Brooklyn is actually kind of on the Northwest side. When talking to 2 or more poeple you would address them as yous, as in "what are yous doing tonight?"
Give me some time to think and I will come up with some more Brooklynisms

Re: Silly ? of the day 6/1/02 Inspired by Dad2jbj\'s "y\'all"
LOL! Great topic! Disknut's warsher reminded me of some differences I found with in-laws when I married a "boy" from southern Missouri. "I throwed that out" was his family's form of "threw". I told one of the kids once to stop being ornery...everyone just looked at me...ON-REE, apparently is how they say it. And of course the nearby town of Nevada, Missouri, threw me for a long time. Pronounced Ne-vay-da, I thought my hubby didn't know how to pronounce Nevada, as in the state.

For Janet44 - RE: Goosey Night!
I did live in Passaic county until I was two, but then moved down "the shore" to Ocean County where the night before Halloween has always been "Mischief Night". I have to ask my Mom and cousins about "Goosey Night".

2 Princesses: I lived in Clifton until I was 8 and I think that's where I got it from! We moved to Elmwood Park (okay, it was East Paterson when I got there but it changed later) and I'm not sure what everyone there called it. I'll have to ask my sisters.

Re: Silly ? of the day 6/1/02 Inspired by Dad2jbj\'s "y\'all"
I couldn't think of a single thing to add to this topic, at first. I just thought the way I spoke was pretty normal! Then I started to read your posts...
I grew up in Kentucky and have lived in Ga. for pretty much the past 15 years now. I always call the drink I'm having whatever the name is. For example, if I want a Sprite,I say Sprite,if I want Pepsi, I say Pepsi. I've never understood what the deal is with calling it anything other than what it is.
I wear tennis shoes, drink sweet tea(it really bugs me to order tea in other places and have to add sugar!), sit on a couch, and carry a purse.
I eat dressing at Thanksgiving, not stuffing. To me, stuffing is made inside the bird and I can't imagine eating that. It has to be cornbread dressing too!
My DH is an army brat, so I can't pinpoint his accent or sayings. His Mom is from Maine and Dad is from N.C. so I guess he gets things from both of them. His Dad speaks about like I do, but my MIL cracks me up with some of hers! She says idear, warsh, quata, etc. She also says "ont" for the relative I've always called "ant". My kids get so confused. I tell them to call my sister "ant" and Daddy's sisters "ont".
I'm sure there are lots more, but I just can't think of them right now.
BTW-I've never heard the word "you'uns" used here in Ga.
Also, someone here said they use bunnyhug instead of hoodies. What is a hoodie?
It's funny too how people see someone from a different state in a preconceived way just because of where they're from. One time when I was visiting my cousins in Iowa, we told people there we were from Ky. and they said they didn't know we had paved roads or wore shoes in Ky.! I'm sure they were just having fun with us(I hope!)
