They kind of work you up to longer higher zips...you take a truck up the mountain to the first zipline station and actually start from the ground and zip over to the second station in the trees. I'm not great with heights, but it was amazing!! You are always clipped on so something with a safety line...you have two so at least one is ALWAYS attached to the trees or the zip cables at all times. If you can bring yourself to do it, the views are gorgeous and it is so exhilarating!!

Texas is so large and so diverse, it would take a couple of weeks to do it justice. The Hill Country region right in the middle is beautiful with many lakes and rivers - very popular for camping and tubing all summer. The Gulf Coast has some interesting sights but pales in comparison to the other 2 coasts. The Big Bend National Park is amazing but huge. The East Piney Woods is very pretty lots of history. The San Antonio Zoo is a good one. Highly recommend Palo Duro Canyon and the "Texas!" stage show there. DH & I hope to see all the states in retirement. I have been to about 40 of states in my lifetime.

Mount Rushmore I highly recommend going in the late afternoon into the evening to explore the grounds including the studio and staying for the lighting ceremony opposed to going first thing in the day

Custer State Park including Wildlife loop, Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Rd-Best is to take it going into Keystone opposed to the other way since you can see Mount Rushmore coming through some of the tunnels

There is a natural history museum at the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City

Place to Stay Crooked Creek Campground located a few minutes south of Hill City. There are a number of choices ranging from tent or bring your own trailer to rustic cabins that have no heat or electric ( We stayed in one in late June 14 and were very happy that my mother in law thought she needed bedding for their room at the Inn accomadations as we used them. Cabin was large we were in # 11 and had 2 queen size beds plus a set of twin beds in bunks a small table and a couple of chairs. They also have nicer cabins some which have their own bathrooms. There is an outdoor heated pool and a small playground. Staff is friendly and this is on my list of places to stay again though we will be going for a cabin that has more than the one we stayed in at the family reunion but at least we were not camping in a tent.

Heart Mountain Interpretive Center I have not been to this one but it was well liked by those from my local homeschooling group who were able to make the trip. We did not go due to our kids being too young to really get much out of it and knowing that to go any distance we have to rent a vehicle for the day.

Buffalo Bill Cody Museum ( Do allow at least 2 days as it is 5 museums in one)

There is a Dam located on the road to Yellowstone from Cody not too far that is interesting

I just saw this again and need to disagree with Holly. New Englland in winter is so different from NE in the summer and the fall is unbelieveable. I could vacation in New England forever and never get tired of it.

I wanted to add as a New Englander who travels to Texas regularly, beware of Texas in the summer. It is ungodly hot (and often humid, too). My son is in Houston and he says you can count the number of really nice days on one hand (warm, not hot, clear and sunny and dry). Also it is big-huge- and distances between cities are more than between states up here.

Highlight of a family visit to the hill country was seeing bats emerge from a cave) thousands of them. I have also tried to see bats coming out from bridges in Houston and Austin but we have never caught it right.
