Water, wildlife and wonders... a road trip around Scotland COMPLETED 11/6 - Page 28 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Thursday 15 June – part two: a visit from the assistant manager…
We headed down to breakfast…
… and found Mari and Raleigh waiting for us. As we said, well at least we knew everyone at breakfast now, after last night…
We helped ourselves to the cold buffet, which wasn’t overly expansive…
… then we ordered our hot meals. I went for the Scottish smoked salmon and scrambled egg, which I have to say, didn’t look that great. It tasted Ok, but I did leave large chunks of the egg behind, as they just looked so disgusting.
Mark had the full Scottish breakfast, which would at least keep him going for a few hours…
While we were there, the assistant manager came round to see us all.
The general manager, we’d discovered last night, lived about 50 miles away, and didn’t drive, so he couldn’t get there last night, but we were assured the assistant manager would see us, and he did. It turned out he’d only been in post for three weeks. Boy, I bet last night was a rude awakening for him! He said that it had given him a lot of food for thought, which is at least something, and he confirmed that we would all be refunded for last night’s stay, although as I suspected when we checked out, we were told it would take some time, as it needed to go through Hotels.com. Oh well, I won’t hold my breath for that then…
We headed outside to pack the car up, and as you can see, it was quite the serious undertaking…
I therefore kept out of the way, and took a few more photos of this lovely place…
We headed out on the same road we’d driven in on, so forgive any repetition from yesterday.
We ended up going all the way back to Inveraray before turned off, although Mark made a wrong turn, which actually turned out quite well for both myself and Mari, as it meant we had to go over the hump backed bridge in front of Inveraray Castle, and neither of us had got that shot yesterday. Well, we certainly did today!
I got a couple of other shots of the village as we headed out…
I'm not surprised. I just had a feeling at the time and what can I do? It wasn't booked direct with the hotel, so they'll just blame Hotels.com. I'm not sure there's anything we can do about it, which is frustrating, but at the end of the day, we only have their word that they said they'd refund us. They gave us nothing in writing.
Definitely contact hotels.com! We had an issue with a booking through them and they helped us the best they could. We ended up with $100 credit through hotels.com for our troubles.
What a crazy last few hours of your evening! From the obnoxious blokes at dinner to the fire alarm, which was completely mishandled by management! I don't think anyone knew how to handle the situation! Worse yet it was management who caused the fire alarm to go off! Glad things settled down the next morning and hope you get your refund!

It was like a bunch of old friends at breakfast! "remember when there was that fire alarm?" "good times."
Great shot of the castle over the bumpy bridge! Great angle.

Did Meri buy that sweater she has on while you were in Scotland? I love it!!
Really cannot believe it's taking so long for the refund. I'd bet if you post something about it on Trip Advisor it might speed it up?

I'm so sorry to hear about your terrible night at the hotel. I definitely would be a noisy wheel and push for some action.
The herring gull photo is lovely and the view from the bridge is stunning - so picturesque! I'm so glad you wee able to snag the shot the 2nd time across.
Definitely contact hotels.com! We had an issue with a booking through them and they helped us the best they could. We ended up with $100 credit through hotels.com for our troubles.
Oh Ok, that's good to know. I genuinely thought they wouldn't have any interest whatsoever....

You are so right when you said it was a few crazy hours!

No, this is a fascinating and almost unbelievable story - she got it about 50 years ago... and honestly we asked her about it a couple of times, as we couldn't quite believe that, but seriously that's how long she had. Personally, I think it's amazing she's still able to get into it (I have so much admiration for her being able to do that! ) and then the fact it's lasted so long is just unbelievable.
After leaving Inveraray, we started to gradually climb upwards, and away from the water. The scenery was constantly changing, but always beautiful, despite the cloud and mist.
We ended up stopping at a lay-by, because there was a neat view to one side…
… and an even neater view to the other side!
We were soon getting some beautiful views of Loch Awe – and I can see where it got its name from.
In the foreground of these shots, you can see Kilchurn Castle – isn’t it something, if it is a little wrecked now?
We headed off again, heading higher and higher, and all the time the scenery was once again changing in front of us. Sometimes the sun would even pop its head out, even amongst all the cloud!
Then we were up at 1,000 feet…
… before starting to drop down again. And then we hit the rain! Oh well, we knew it had to happen sometime. From then on, the rain came and went, and I did what I could with the photos…
As you can see from some of these shots, the sun did come out from time to time, and when it did, it cast such majestic colours over the landscape below…
Such amazing views and as you said I can see why they call it Loch Awe! Too bad the rain hindered your photos at times! It could at least hold off until you were done taking photos!
