A Swiss spring break with friends TRIP REPORT COMPLETED 6/27 - Page 25 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

The Olympic Museum looks so cool!! I love the bit about the different torches and they all look pretty neat to me!! I also love the photo where you really whipped Mark as he came in 3rd!!
Glad to see only the gift shop was a disappointment. So far, this is a really cool museum!
It really was amazing, one of the best I've been to in a long time.

I know you're a huge fan so you probably already knew, but I had no idea they used to give out trophies!
No, I had no idea about that - the trophies pretty much stopped, from what I could see, before World War I, so I learnt something there.
Quote:
Yes, that would be cool if they started to do that again. And I've also never paid attention that torches are different for every Olypmics. See - you're educating others with your TR's!
WOW! I am blown away from your photos, Cheryl! I feel like I am right there with you....
Aw, thanks so much!

The hotel you are staying in is absolutely breath taking water, flowers and etc...when you are checking out online where you want to stay and you look at the rooms to make sure that this is what you really need, it is almost magical to see what you booked online in person! You hope it is good, but it is like 10 times fabulous of what you see in person. Good for you!
I don't want to spoil things, but all I'll say at this point is that, beautiful as it looked, we ran into problems later on this trip and, sadly as a result, we won't be going back there. It's a real shame, as they messed up badly and then made things worse afterwards.

As I was reading your Trip Report, You are really lucky that you can do this over the weekend, where as us Americans who live in USA, we would need at least a week to do this trip and then of course taking more time to travel. Just saying..... lol.
We are very lucky to have so many different countries we can go to for a weekend, you are so right about that. A lot of your states are bigger than some of the countries we have over here.
In a weekend or maybe a long weekend (two nights/three days like this one), we could probably get to all the following countries:
1) France *
2) Belgium *
3) Switzerland *
4) Spain
5) Italy *
6) Germany *
7) Czech Republic
8) Denmark
9) Austria *
10) Holland *
11) Portugal
12) Hungary *
13) Croatia
14) Malta
15) Norway *
16) Sweden *
17) Poland
You get the idea. By the way, I've put stars against the ones we've visited in a weekend/long weekend or just for a couple of nights from the UK...
I'm jealous of you being so close to some amazing European countries. For me I would have to do a good week to make it worthwhile with the jetlag and long flights as well as flight costs.
What I can say is that I've been to 9 countries on that list and I feel blessed to have done it and enjoyed every bit of it! Just for a tally I've been to 1,3,4,5,6,7,9,10 and 11. Got to visit the Eastern block eventually!
The museum looks great with so much great coverage and artifacts of the games. Well themed and done so well. Glad they have so much from the beginning in Athens of 1896 and the very early years of the games as you want to see this and how things have changed and evolved over 100+ years.

Wow! You are so LUCKY! The only countries I have been were Ireland & United Kingdom and that was a total of 10 days- but so worth it! I think I need to consider moving to Europe....lol (I really want to go to France and to see Paris too).

Well, we say it's not worth going to the States for anything less than two weeks for exactly those reasons.

We've done 12 of the 17 - I only marked off the ones we'd done in a weekend or a couple of nights, but we've done others with longer stays.

And wow, how they've changed if you think of the opening ceremonies we get now!

Well, moving to Europe would certainly be one way to do it...
Sunday 6 May – part eleven: some truly amazing sights…
The next section in the museum looks at the transformation for all the Olympic cities, although interestingly I did notice there was no reference to Rio. Perhaps too early or perhaps for other reasons? As we understand it from what we’ve heard, a lot of the venues got pulled down straight after the Olympics and the regeneration benefits that other countries have had may not come there, let’s just put it that way….
A model of the “bird’s nest” stadium in Beijing
Our home games
A model of the 2012 velodrome
Also in this section were the various mascots from the Games…
Not the greatest shot with the reflection
There were some fascinating souvenirs from Games gone by. As I said with the Queen Studio Experience, I love one off things like this….
The final section on this floor was all about the opening ceremonies of each Games…
You could sit and watch a video of various opening ceremonies and I got very teary eyed when they showed snippets from London. I still get so much pride every time I see anything from that night. I had hoped to one day have the Games on home soil and it still almost feels half like a dream that it happened.
We went to head downstairs and we were all immediately struck by this. How clever is it?
The first section showed you which sports took place at each Games and was really interesting…
[url=https://flic.kr/p/266zF4q]
Then you walk through a series of more standard exhibitions – in that respect, this was more like a traditional museum. The displays were very eclectic shall we say and you did have to work hard sometimes to find the corresponding information about them, but if you did, you were rewarded with some truly amazing sights…
The baton from the 1968 Olympic Games champions and world record holders
An electric starting pistol from London 1948 – the first Games that used one of these…
The pommel horse signed by Li Donghua from Switzerland who won the gold medal
Swimsuit worn by a Russian and signed by her – she made history with another Russian by winning five Olympic golds in the sport over three different games
Usain Bolt’s vest from the 2008 Beijing Olympics
Team GB outfit of Sir Chris Hoy, two-time gold medallist, from London 2012
Mark and I both commented that the only thing we would say is that we’d have preferred to have seen a little bit more about the Paralympic Games than they had here. It’s a shame the way they always seem to get relegated in a way.
