Solo-on-a-Scooter takes the A-Train. LIVE TR, 8/29 - 9/11/2015 - Page 25 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

So sorry you weren't feeling well, but it is probably good that you got another full day of rest in, so you can go strong this week.Perhaps the incoming rain had something to do with your headache as well. love those crocs!!!
Oh Laurie that is so sweet! I remember you telling me when you bought them. In fact, I noticed them on your feet in your picture with Mickey a few days ago, I just forgot to comment about that. Those crocs hold up well. Owen is wearing them now! They're a little big on him, but he insists on putting them on every day. I figure by the time we go in March, they should fit him much better. Of course I may end up buying new pairs to keep the tradition of new Disney crocs each trip. Out of all the purchases, those are my favorite.
I was wondering if Owen could wear them yet! Crocs are incredibly durable. Mine look like new-- I guess that'll happen when you don't walk on your shoes!

It could definitely have been the rain that started the headache. I'm definitely on my way back to AK today.

Sorry you weren't feeling well yesterday, but glad that today is a better day! What a cute story about the crocs! Maybe Disney is missing a trick not having them in adult sizes.
Great to hear you feel better today. Love the crocs!
Thanks, Sharon!

Judging from the reactions I'm getting they could clean up!

I always love reading about the procedures - you have such detail in your reports! It's so interesting!

Day 11. Monday, Sept 7. Overcast and a bit cooler. Light rain around noon.
It was foggy and still very humid when I set out this morning, but it felt good to have a lower temperature and no piercingly hot sunshine. I snapped a photo of the Pandora construction now visible off to the left as you stand at the entrance gate. Looks like two structures?
There were three birds in for procedures this morning. The first was a Pink-backed Pelican chick. These are the birds sharing the pond on the safari with the hippos. This chick is only 4 weeks old and the keepers noticed that his leg is misshapen. The vets examined the bird and thought there was either a growth on the bone or the bird’s knee was dislocated. The chick was having difficulty standing and walking, so something had to be done quickly. X-rays showed that the knee was dislocated, but it had happened some time ago, possibly right after hatching. Scar tissue had formed and now the joint was locked in a bad position. They will attempt surgery some time this week or next and will try to re-build the joint. Unfortunately, Dr Ryan says there is only a 50% chance of success. If they cannot fix the joint the bird will have to be euthanized. Most facilities would probably not even make the attempt to save this baby and I know they will do everything possible to give this bird a good life. I couldn’t get any good photos because they were covering the bird to keep him warm. He only has a few baby downy feathers and looked like a plucked chicken.
The two birds coming out next were a weaver and a dove, but I never got to see them. I heard my name called and standing behind me was vet tech intern Tori. Laura (who was off today) had asked her to take me on a backstage hospital tour! Lidia has taken me backstage several times, but it’s always changing and always fascinating. No photos allowed, unfortunately. We went to see the larger surgical suite, then into the pathology lab where tech Juliana was staining some slides. Tori is a very sweet and very intelligent young woman. She’s almost finished with her internship at AK. Thousands of students apply for these positions every year and only two are chosen, so she’s on her way to a very good career. I was shown the ICU, which had two patients, the kitchen area, saw how they get the larger animals into the building from the trucks, saw the huge scale for weighing the big animals. On one wall they have a foam silhouette of a tiger that they use for practicing with the dart gun! They aim for the muscles in the rump and from the holes in the foam, they seem to be pretty good shots! I was shown books with photos of past procedures, and also photos of all the conservation and animal health projects the vets and techs work on all over the world. Lidia had told everyone that I’m a tortoise fan so next I met the two local gopher tortoises who are being treated. One of them, “Wheels”, was featured in a recent Disney Parks Blog post. Wheels was hit by a car and had a bad shell crack and broken pelvis. The vets patched him up, but his hind legs were paralyzed. To help him get around and encourage him to use his legs, they attached a set of Lego wheels to the underside of his shell. It’s amazing watching him walk around now. He’s almost ready to have the wheels taken off. If his shell continues to harden well he’ll be released back into the wild in a few months. The other tortoise had also been hit by a car and his shell was smashed into pieces. Amazingly, he was otherwise okay and the vets used wires and screws to repair the shell. Tortoises have such slow metabolisms that the healing takes quite a while, but this guy should be okay for release eventually, too. His name is “Wreck-it-Ralph”! I really wish I could have photographed these two. They were wonderful. Before heading out, I was invited to sit and have coffee with Drs Ryan and Geoff. Very dedicated and very nice men who clearly enjoy what they do and the people they work with. We had a very nice chat about their plans for expansion of the hospital and new ways to open the experience up to guests.
How’s that for a great morning?! Happy and tired, I made my way back to the bus and was back at the Boardwalk by 12:30. I picked up a salad at the pool bar (they have a great apple, cheese and pomegranate salad) for lunch. Will probably get a kid’s meal grilled cheese from room service for dinner. Seems funny to write up my TR for the whole day at 4pm, but that's it for me today!
So glad you felt better today so that you could spend time at AK and the vet window. Such a neat tour of the hospital! The Crocs are so cute, so it's easy to see why folks are chasing you down to find out where you got them. I had actually wondered about your shoes in one of your earlier photos.
Glad to hear that you were feeling better so you could make it to AK today. I hope the vets are successful with the baby pelican's knee. Sounds like a great behind the scenes tour.

Another great day in the Ak as it's such a great experience to see all of us as most don't! Glad you were feeling a bit better today! Hope they are able to fix the baby pelican's leg, but since it's been like that for quite some time, may be difficult! I'm sure all your friends missed you yesterday and I don't mean the various vets and nurses!

How to get the backstage tour!! I imagine someone lucky enough to intern at AK can pretty well write their own ticket. Wonder what percentage try to remain at AK? I wouldn't think there are many places quite like AK in the world.
