PTR: The Dunning Family's Triumphant Return to the World - Page 24 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Awesome! I didn't see your first post about Pop until now as I've spent most of the day packing. So glad it worked out that you could shift back to Pop!

Thank you again, everyone! I'm so excited to be back at Pop Century! I called AJ today and was blabbing at him about how excited I was and how even though ASM would have been okay, my heart really had been set on Pop, and this just makes our trip that much more exciting. He was so sweet and let me blather on as long as I wanted.
And then he told me he lost his job.
I feel really bad for him, and told him so, but he said he thinks it's actually a good thing. He was working at the same Walmart that gave David such a terrible time and contributed to his breakdown in 2013. They have been treating AJ pretty horribly for the longest time, and he has been thinking about getting a new job. He said that since it was something called an "exception" that they had to fire him for, they told him to reapply in thirty days and they would hire him back ASAP as a supervisor again.
He told me "The only way I'm going back is if there is NOTHING else out there! I am so tired of the way they treat their employees." He told me he is worried about being unemployed, but oddly thrilled about losing his job. I get the feeling. David felt the same way when he left Walmart.
I told him that if he had to back out of the trip, I would totally understand, and he said that as of right now, he plans on still going. He has unemployment coming, and he's already put in several applications. He has savings and a few other things socked away for emergencies, so he said he's good for at least six months, and he's sure that either way he'll have a job within 30 days. (He grumbled "Because I will go back to Walmart if I have to, at least until I can find something else.")
So, send poor AJ lots of pixies and good thoughts, because he is the nicest guy ever and doesn't deserve to have this happen to him. Even the lady who fired him was in tears and said she hated that she had to do it. Something about him going over his fifth hour without clocking out for lunch on time too many times or something, and that being illegal in WA state so Walmart could get in trouble if someone reported it. Never mind the fact that they make it darn near impossible for supervisors to make it to lunch on time there... ANYWAY. I get a little fired up about Walmart. Don't mind me. I'm just going to sit over here and be all indignant at the way they treated my best friend.
I just really hope he can still make it on the trip, because I am so excited to take the trip with him! But, more so, I hope he gets another job soon so he doesn't struggle to make ends meet! He deserves better.
Sorry that AJ lost his job, but it sounds as though it could be a blessing in disguise! Hopefully he will find something soon with an employer who appreciates his hard work! coming his way!
Sorry to hear about AJ and hope all goes well with him!

I talked to him again today, and it really seems like he is happy about this in a roundabout way. He says that he has heard of a few good places hiring, looking for supervisor experience. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him!

Yes, I saw how hard it was on David when he got laid off in 2014. But I'm hopeful that with his supervisor experience he will be able to find something fairly quickly...and as he said, if all else fails, he will have a job next month.

I hate going into Walmart. I very rarely go in there, and the only reason I go in there at all is their pharmacy is literally the only one that we can afford David's medication at. Which is...ironic? Very weird, anyway. David's mom still shops there and it drives me crazy! We shop Target now. Little more expensive, but at least I've worked there before and know they treat their employees decently.

He got fired for not taking a break in 5 hours? Really? I work 6-8 hours before I get a break. Wow. Pixies for AJ!
Yeah. In Washington state, it's law that you get a lunch before your fifth hour. To avoid getting fined or whatever for this, Walmart (and my old employers as well) keep track of whether you are clocking out before your fifth hour. At Walmart, you get like three warnings or something and then you're gone. I'm amazed he managed to hang on that long. He was a supervisor in a department where he should have had at least six employees working under him. He had one. So he was doing his job plus his employees job. They did that same garbage to David when he was a supervisor. Luckily, David got a new job and quit before they could pull this crap with him. Walmart is a truly terrible company to work for.
I'm sure that non-retail employers are a little less militant about it. At David's current job, there are days where he MIGHT get one break and no lunch at all. He keeps snacks at his desk and swings by on the run to grab them when he's busy.

Yeah - I guess it's different in the retail world. We cannot predict whether we will get time for a break. Sometimes we have a float nurse to cover our break times but not always. And if we are in the middle of a code (CPR) or something, then we won't be walking out to take a break. :roll eyes:
But normally, I work 3pm to 3:30 am and don't take my break until 9 pm or later. Halfway through my shift. Not bad. Some work 7-7:30 and don't take break until 5! I couldn't go 10 hours!

Oh my goodness, I couldn't go ten hours either! Heck, I couldn't go six, unless I had a snack on me. I'm hypoglycemic, I would pass out on the floor, haha. You, ma'am, are Super Woman - Nurse Extraordinaire.
