Returning to Roman times… COMPLETED - Page 22 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

What beautiful pictures in Sorrento! How odd that you were programmed to go to the same spot you were for that cruise. Glad it wasn't all terrible after that! Your camera's capabilities are quite impressive. The photos are just amazing! Ooh, I'll try and get a photo of my painting up soon. Just curious what your thought would be.
I would imagine driving around on those roads is fun in a manual! I miss mine very much, I still dream about driving it. It's so much more fun than an automatic. And around curves and hills, yes even more so!! Alas, someday I shall get another....

How great to find a garage that was inexpensive, close to where you wanted to go, and no hills between point a & b (which seems like the biggest miracle of all, given the make up of Sorrento!).
It pretty much was a miracle to find that place, as you say.
I think it is just remarkable the way the Mountains are cut through to make roads ways and some buildings are attached or built into them. That is a very lovely town. So many yachts, WOW!!!!!!
Great luck finding that car park! Beautiful shots, again, but my favorites are of the car below maneuvering the hairpin turn. Very vivid illustration of some of the driving challenges!
It is - and you imagine that little "train" service that you can see in one of the shots navigating that. That's what we were in the last time we were in Sorrento, feeling lousy after the hydrofoil trip over.

Please do - I'd love to see it.

I'm not sure "fun" is the word Mark would use for driving them in a manual - I know what you're saying, but an automatic would've been so much easier.

I think that least set of pictures are just so neat. It really shows a beautiful town. And the pictures from above, I just can't even imagine living in an area like that when it is so flat here.
Sunday 5 May – part nine: eating on Sorrento’s main square
We found a place, although there was only a limited area that was non smoking outside, and none of those seats were anywhere near the square. Still, despite that, it was a nice enough location, and I’d rather be away from smoke than have the view and be smoked out.
The menu here was exceptionally expansive, and it took us ages to make our choices, although one of us took longer than the other…
They certainly look after you in Italy. I can’t believe how much bread they always seem to bring you. If only they still did that at home, but sadly they don’t. They figured out that they could do away with it, still charge the same prices, but make a saving.
I went for the shrimp and salmon pizza, although sadly it wasn’t as good as I was hoping, as some of the shrimp was overcooked, which was a real shame.
Mark had the half and half – sadly I didn’t photograph the menu, so I can’t remember exactly what it was called, but you get the idea from the photo – half a pizza, along with some pasta.
For dessert, well what do you think I went for? You got it – gelato, and four scoops of it, coffee, stracciatella, which is essentially vanilla ice cream with chocolate in it, After Eight (as in the mints you can get – I don’t know if you get them over there ) and tiramisu – of course! It was all very good, although I will say the After Eight scoop did look as bad as the colour of it suggests, which was a shame, as the rest of it was excellent.
Mark opted for the pineapple, which was very creatively presented:
To finish off our meal, we got these:
And look what we got with the bill… limoncello!
The meal wasn’t cheap, but then again, we didn’t expect it to be, given its location. It was almost double what we’d paid last night, and with no alcohol today.
Fauno Bar:
Entrée 7½ 9
Dessert 9 8
Service 7½ 8
Atmosphere 9 8
Value for money 8 8
Average score: 8.20
Before we left, I had to get some photos of the interior of the bar, which was beautiful, and the historic images they had in here:
We headed down the main road in Sorrento, which we’d been along during our last visit…
… and we found the Duomo or Cathedral, which didn’t seem nearly as grand as the one we’d seen earlier in Amalfi, a much smaller town. This building has been rebuilt many times over the years, the most recent one in the early 20th century, which perhaps explains its lack of grandeur.
We crossed the road, and got a good look at the more dramatic side of the cathedral…

Ok, I'm all caught up now and your views and photos are beautiful as always. I do have a sort of random question. What are the independent gelato stands charging for a cone or cup these days? I'm curious as to the change since Italy adopted the Euro. When I was last in Italy the exchange rate was about 1600L to 1US and a cone of gelato ran us between 200-400 Lira--or about a 0.15 US. We ate gelato all week long every day, several times a day and didn't spend $2 the whole time.
