A magical Meditteranean vacation - the Italy road trip COMPLETED - Page 20 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

What a great vantage from the boat - the pictures are great. I did wonder about the depth of the river as I recall seeing waders in a stretch we parked by, and the water barely covered teir feet!
So incredible that such an ancient structure is still in constant use today. Interesting blending of ancient and modern. What a cool spot for a Disney Store! The architecture of Verona is so beautiful! That specials menu is a bit disturbing. Yuck! I love how this trip has had its favor share of gelato. Vincenza is another lovely city. So sorry that Padua was a bust. The Ferrari museum is one that Luke would really enjoy. I had not idea Ferrari made purses. What a fascinating tour! I can't believe the heat you all are having to put up with. Great tour of Florence, which is so beautiful. Oh my, that boat was tiny! But at least from the river you got stunning views of Florence
What a beautiful ride. It's amazing how they cram you all on that little boat. I was going to say I would be worried it would sink, but I guess it wouldn't be an issue in just a few feet of water.

It really was an absolutely stunning place.

Well, it wouldn't be a trip around Italy without gelato, right?

I know - obviously all my "cool thoughts" didn't work, but I guess at least it makes for nice photos, right?

I'm so glad we did that tour, as it gave us a very different perspective of the city.

In truth, it was still a fear of mine, but obviously they do this regularly and know what they're doing....
Wednesday 16 July – part nine: dinner in a construction site…
On the way back, we saw the helicopter drone again, and I got some neat shots of it:
Good catch!
Our “driver” told Vanessa he’d heard there was a movie being made, but when I did an Internet search, it turned out that it was a documentary for the Kansas Health Foundation, from which the Florence Community Garden received several grants, and that’s what they were filming. The finished version will go on the foundation website, so we won’t be movie stars any time soon…
We sailed back under the Ponte Vecchio again…
After that, Vanessa warned us against what a lot of people were doing – sitting on the edge of the bridge. We could see why, with only 50 centimetres of water underneath it, there’s no way you’d survive that if you fell.
Then we were back to where we’d started from. Ok, so we’d been a bit apprehensive when we started, but we’d all really enjoyed it.
Fortunately, our launch and landing point was quite close to our hotel, so we headed back that way, looking for dinner.
The next boat going out looked much more full than ours!
Eventually, we found a place, although it was very surreal, as it was literally in the middle of a building site, as they were digging up the road.
Now I will say here the food was superb, although there was a huge mess-up with the ordering. Mark and I both ordered Caprese, mozzarella and tomato for appetiser, and it just never made it. Instead, we both got our entrée choices.
I went for the potato gnocchi with porcini mushrooms, and it was wonderful…
Mark got the sliced chicken with tomatoes and arugula, and really enjoyed it…
Now some time after we’d finished that, and Mari and Raleigh had finished theirs, their main courses turned up… I was relieved ours didn’t turn up, as we were pretty stuffed by then, and they barely ate anything. It was such a shame, as the food was very good.
When we got up and settled up, they hadn’t charged us for either of the Caprese salads we never received, which was good, and they took €10 ($12.60) off the bill, which was good of them.

We wandered back to the hotel, and I got a few final night-time shots on the way…
As soon as we got back to the room, I hit the sack immediately, as I was absolutely exhausted. It had been a very long, and very hot day. Wonderful as it had been, it was also draining to be out in heat like that…
The weather today was very hot and sunny with temperatures in the high 90s. The best thing today was wandering around Florence in the evening. The worst thing today was the heat. The funniest thing today was our faces when we saw our boat! Today we tried going to the Ferrari Museum and taking the factory and track tour And the result was it was very interesting, more than I thought it would be. The most magical moment today was being on the boat in the River Arno.
Dinner looks really good, even if they messed up the order. (I think that's fettuccine, not gnocchi?-- whatever, it looks super-good) I'm not surprised you fell right into bed when you got to the hotel. A long, full and wonderful day.
The photo of the underside of the bridge is great! Love the look of it.
Also, the photo of the two of you at dinner is wonderful! Glad the food was yummy too.

You are spot on with that - so I guess they messed up even more with the order, as the menu definitely said gnocchi and you're right, what they served up wasn't. I had a look through the menu and there was nothing else on there that it could be.
