Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Saturday 6 October – part twelve: what’s that on Buzz’s backside?

We headed outside...

.. but we didn’t stop for long, as we wanted to make the 2:45pm show of Animagique, one of the attractions unique to Disneyland Paris. I was surprised to see that people were still waiting outside when we arrived, around 20 minutes before the show was due to start, and in fact we weren’t let in until 10 minutes before, which to me was cutting it a little too close...

We quickly snagged some good seats on the lower set of seats in the dead centre of the stage. Now how to explain this show? Well, Mickey and Donald start it off, engaged in a sort of drawing competition, then Mickey heads off, leaving the key to the cinematic vault by his easel. Well, with Donald around, that’s just never a good idea. You can guess what happens next...

With the key in hand, Donald enters the vault and meets a variety of famous friends, such as the pink elephants from Dumbo, Baloo and King Louie from the Jungle Book, Simba as a cub from the Lion King, and there’s even a sequence from the Little Mermaid. The difference is the use of black light puppetry here. As a result, a lot of the lighting is odd, so you don’t see the performers, but I have to be honest, even when I looked, sometimes I couldn’t see them, they’re that good. It’s a very unique show, and I can honestly say there is absolutely nothing like in any other Disney park, which is why I always make a point of seeing it whenever we’re here.

In case you’re wondering why there’s so much description, and no photos of it, it’s because no photos of any kind are allowed during the show, as they “could be dangerous to the performers”. Not sure how much I believe of that, but they do make a big deal of it, and if they see anyone with a camera, they tend to pounce on them, so I never risk it.

Once the show was done, we headed outside, with everyone deciding to get their waterproofs and umbrellas sorted out once they were outside the theatre. Please! You knew it was raining when you came in here, it shouldn’t be a surprise to find out it’s still raining outside. Now couldn’t you have sorted yourselves inside the theatre? Ok, public announcement/rant over...!

We headed down past Crush’s Coaster, bringing back not-so-good memories from the time I went on it ...

... and the mini Cars area. As we passed it, I couldn’t help but wonder whether the Imagineers who created Cars Land in Disneyland came here to look at what they’d done. It’ll be interesting to see Cars Land for ourselves in December, and to see if we can spot any similarities.

It was only later than we were to learn that this area is actually to be an entrance into an expanded part of the park... more to come on that!

Then it was into the new area of the park that was only being built the last time we were here – Toy Story Playland. It was almost done, and Mark managed to sneak some shots of what was under construction. I have to say I loved the massive Buzz Lightyear at the entrance to this part of the park, and in particular what was stamped on his backside!

From here, we could see cranes where the expansion of the park is taking place...

This part of the park didn’t seem to be that busy, although in fairness, the signs were saying 25 minute waits for some things, and for the Toy Soldiers Parachute Drop, the wait was 60 minutes! Having seen the rides here, I’m not sure I’d wait that long for any of them... I don’t want to be disparaging, but it’s just that they were all standard rides with just a bit of theming. It reminded me of Legoland Windsor in that respect. You could go up and be gradually dropped down, you had a merry-go-round that went up and down (Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin).

They both looked great, but there was nothing new to either of them, and of course, when they finished, that was it – you had to then unload the current lot of guests, and load the next lot, just like rides like Dumbo. I must admit I thought that they were phasing out rides like that at Disney, because they tend to be slow loading as a result, and also their capacity is low.

That was exactly the problem with the final ride in this area – RC Racers, which stands for remote control, as they were at pains to tell us. To be honest though, whenever I see the words RC, I can’t help but think of something else... is it just me?

Now that looked like a serious amount of terror was involved. We watched in a mix of amazement and horror, as the cars went to and fro. There was no way, for any amount of money, you’d get either of us on that thing. However, the people on it did appear to be having a ball, and I guess that’s the main thing...

I can't WAIT to try out RC Racer in March I assume it'll become on of my favorite rides! The other two attractions in Toystory Playland are really more geared towards kids. The Parachute Drop is sort of a kiddie version of Tower of Terror

The Cars area does look similar to the one in CA. CarsLand just takes it further and the rock formations make it seem like its own little world. The art design of that movie really lends itself to effective theming! The Toy Story area looks cute. NO WAY would I get on that racers ride, either.

Very intriguing teaser!

Toy Story Playland looks cute, but I wish they had rides with more themeing to really get you immersed in the story.

The only reason I can think that pics might be a danger to the performers in Animagique is because it's so dark. Imagine a flash in the face and it would be a minute before the performer could see again....falling off the stage/running into other performers...it could get dangerous.

I have no idea why the Parachute Drop line is always so long! It was 80+ min when we were there - longest line in the park!

What do you think of when you see RC? Certainly not RC cola like us Southerners...?

That's a good point. I was thinking that everyone was like me and capable of taking photos without the flash, but sadly a lot of people aren't.

I think it's partially because it's new and because it's slow loading.

The RC Racers ride looks like a lot of fun, although certainly not something innovative and different like I hope for from Disney. Crush's Coaster, on the other hand, sounds like a ride that I would absolutely love!

I love seeing all the different rides and themes from the other Disney parks. It's nice knowing that there are some things completely designed for that park alone instead of it all being the same. Sad part is I don't think I'll ever make it to any of the parks in your part of the world.

Wow - the Studios have really changed since I was there! So much so, that I wouldn't even recognize the place now. The last time I was there, they were just starting the construction of the Tower of Terror. The only real attractions were the Rock 'n Roller Coaster, Animagique, Cinemagique, Sounds Dangerous, and the Lights/Motors/Action show... I really think that was about it! There was no Pixar Place, no Crush's Coaster, no Toy Story Land... The place was as stark as stark can be, and really only a half-day park, if that. Something major really needed to be done, and it looks like it has (thankfully).

I was also going to guess that when you heard "RC" you were thinking of RC Cola ("Royal Crown Cola"). Now you have me really wondering -- what were you thinking of?

So glad you were able to catch Animagique...it was one of our favorite shows when we visited. I only vaguely recall ToyStory Playland but I know we didn't hit any of those rides!

Never say never... if you want to do it badly enough, it will happen...

There was no Pixar Place, no Crush's Coaster, no Toy Story Land... The place was as stark as stark can be, and really only a half-day park, if that. Something major really needed to be done, and it looks like it has (thankfully).
I remember that - it really was poor in those days with very little to see.

I was also going to guess that when you heard "RC" you were thinking of RC Cola ("Royal Crown Cola"). Now you have me really wondering -- what were you thinking of?
Well maybe you don't have the word over there - but we certainly have it here and it's been pointed out by others that it sounds the same when you say it.... arsy. It's a word in common use here and it means disgruntled, although it's probably a lot stronger than that. Generally if you describe someone in those terms, it's not a compliment.... Not a good word to be associated with a Disney ride...
