Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: Fastpass changes - rumors

Very interesting. Like Sarah said, some people stay in more budget-conscious resorts so they can visit more often. Our family has waited 5 years to make another trip to WDW, so we're going a little more deluxe in our visit, but it may be another 5 years before we go again. I don't think that should entitle us to better fastpass times than a family who stays in a budget resort every year. I know life's not fair, but that doesn't make it easier to understand.

Wonder how they would do that with AP and SP holders... sometimes they stay on property, sometimes they don't -- or they stay at different levels of hotels... hmmmmm....

I hope this is not true. I am a major WDW fan but I can't afford to stay at a deluxe resort.

Re: Fastpass changes - rumors

I spend the least amount of time at the resort during my visit. I use it for sleeping, swimmming, and the occasional meal. When I visit WDW, I always choose a value resort for this reason and I spend the extra money on dinner shows, Cirque du Soleil, shopping, etc. I hope also that this is just a rumor. I would hate to give up the extras because I had to stay in a more expensive resort to avoid lines within the parks.

Re: Fastpass changes - rumors

Oh Michelle-I hope not. I like some of the other ideas-getting in advance or getting a pass with a few attractions on it and pre-set times. However, I think getting a time on your fastpass depending on where you are staying and how much money you are spending is totally unfair and certainly not in Disney's best interests.

Re: Fastpass changes - rumors

How would you (everyone) feel about priority times for FastPasses being given to people who are staying on property?

(Kind of combining what FastPass is now and the Universal Front of the Line ideas..)

Just curious.

Based on what I've read that's seems to be what they are intending. But stop and think for a second folks. There are already people getting perks not everyone is based on what they pay - it's called concerige level. How many times have we read posts that someone called in right on the dot of the phone lines opening and can't get an Illuminations cruise because they've all been scooped up by concerige. And it wouldn't be the first time disney has doled out favors to certain groups. Also no where does it say that ONLY people that stay on property are going to get FPs. It's just that if you stay on prop. you'll probaby get better times to get another FP, or a better return time. Disney is still going to try and used FP for crowd control.

Re: Fastpass changes - rumors

You could be right MaryAnn. Universal currently does both - they have the front of the line access for resort guests, and they have Express Pass, which is the same thing as FastPass, for anybody. But I know by about 3:00 - 4:00, most of the Express Passes were gone for the day.

I guess Disney has so many hotel rooms, they couldn't offer this kind of perk to everyone, so they might be trying to figure who should get it. And who would you reward? The ones who spend the most.

Re: Fastpass changes - rumors

I really don't think there's any need for panic that Disney is about to do away with Fastpasses for the general public. I think it's more a question of Disney offering extra Fastpass perks for Disney resort guests and that these perks will increase in amount depending on whether you're staying at a value, moderate or deluxe. I suspect that in the long run, it will end up benefiting everyone who stays at a Disney resort and would mean better FP access for all resort guests than they receive now.

[/ QUOTE ]And keep in mind that not everyone that has access will use it. Just think how many resort guests DON'T use EMH or can't seem to figure out about FP's at all. I still think they will offer them to everyone and then those of us that actually want to take advantage will make the effort.

Re: Fastpass changes - rumors

I think it is okay for them to offer this to onsite guests--it give them an additional perk to market to keep more people on site... but I'd hate to see them discriminate by hotel class...I don't think they WOULD do that.

If everyone had unlimited Fast Pass...wouldn't that make it more and more difficult for them to orchestrate FP in a timely manner? I know that often the best rides have no FP available for the remainder of a day... so once they are gone...they only have so much capacity on some rides.

When I studied operations management in grad school I always though this would be an interesting case study to disect.

Re: Fastpass changes - rumors

I think the whole thing is ridiculous. Some people can't stay onsite, like us for example since we're bringing our dog, and giving special FP's to people for staying onsite is stupid We're staying offsite, but we'll be in th eDisney parks for 10 days and are planning on eating in some of the most expensive resaurants We'll also be visiting the resorts for meals, going to DTD and DisneyQuest, the Boardwalk and more... we're paying Disney quite a bit, so why should we be discriminated against? I wants my FP's! LoL!

Re: Fastpass changes - rumors

I don't think they are trying to discriminate against "day guests", but I think they might be thinking of a way to entice more people to stay on WDW property, especially now that they have 4 Value resorts available to fill up. I can see them doing this in the near future, following along the same thought process as Universal and their front-of-the-line pass for guests who stay at a Universal hotel....with so many more rooms and guests on WDW property than on Universal, a front-of-the-line pass for WDW resort guests would be practically impossible to offer, so they are probably thinking about doing the next-best thing.

I wonder how this will work for us DVC members?

[/ QUOTE ]

Funny you should ask that! My best friend is going with me in April and he is also a travel agent, who has sold concierge-level at WDW. He asked me to look into this Fastpass issue @ DVC. (He feels DVC is online with the concierge level at the Contemporary, Grand Floridian, etc) They gave me the standard "how fastpass in the parks work" line.

I'm not sure HOW I feel about it. I read a post on here that had my first thought: Uncle Walt wanted EVERYONE to enjoy his parks, not just the elite.
