Forums Closed

As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: Tigger in Handcuffs!
That's afwul!
While in Epcot in 2002 I was talking with a cast member that said how Disney had really changed. They use to have a very ridgid or tough hiring interviews, not just one but several and now he said they just hire about anybody.
This makes me wonder if he isn't correct.
How very sad for my magical safe place.
makes me very angry and sad at the same time.

Re: Tigger in Handcuffs!
Oh my God you guys. This is sickening. I thought this thread was a joke. I can't believe it's real.
I would like to think that all the people standing around would be a deterrent but apparently in the 3 cases cited in this thread it wasn't. I really hope this wakes Disney up to the importance of screening the applicants that have that level of physical contact with children. They certainly charge enough in admission to cover this cost. I am incredibly saddened by this.

Hmm..I don't think that's necessarily true. I just went through a three hour interview with Disney, so it's still pretty rigid. I also know the characters go through a lot to become a cast member as well (I have three friends who are characters). That being said, I don't think they do any screenings for past criminal records or anything...and I certainly think they need to do so! They also need, obviously, to screen their applicants in a different way if the old way failed them. Then again, you can screen individuals and do police background checks, but you can't always tell who are the criminals and who aren't. Unfortunately, you can't tell a molestor by their looks. Disney isn't necessarily responsible for one man's actions.
All I can say is that I feel so badly for the victims and I'm praying it doesn't happen again to anyone else. It's a shame it happened in a place where adults and children should feel safe.

Re: Tigger in Handcuffs!
My best friend and I looked at each other when we heard about the "handsy Tigger" and said is that "our handsy Tigger". She had gotten "touched" by Tigger 2 and a half years ago but wasn't sure if it was on purpose or exactly where it had happened.

Re: Tigger in Handcuffs!
This is the kind of story you hope isn't true, but due to human nature.... :::sigh:::
I'm sure that Disney takes this very seriously. My guess is that character interaction will most certainly continue - it's just too big a part of the magic for Disney to turn its back on it - if they reopen attractions after serious accidents, they'll certainly continue with character interaction.
There's little doubt in my mind that Disney will invest plenty of time "reeducating" its character-cast members and the character "handlers." No doubt the handlers (there's at least one at every character interaction) have already been instructed to keep an even more watchful eye out for anything untoward.
As to whether Disney runs background checks, I'm pretty sure that they do. If I read the news correctly, though, the alleged perpetrator's behavior may be connected to a medical condition (failure to stay on a prescription, for example). There are strict privacy and anti-discrimination laws regarding medical information and how it can be used, and for very good reason. If the alleged perpetrator did not have a prior criminal record (and we would almost assuredly have heard about it if he did) I'm afraid this may turn out to be the kind of circumstance where background checks could not have helped. Further, one would think that if this behavior was at all regular, it would have been caught a long time ago.
Every time the "real world" intrudes on the magic we have to pause and readjust. Except in places like these boards, we're far more likely to hear bad news about Disney than good. "Family Has Magical Time at Walt Disney World" happens too often for it to be newsworthy. Fortunately, the good far outweighs the bad - that's why we love the place so much. When we let stories like this deter us, we're the ones who lose. Travel always involves some risk, but oh, those rewards!

Re: Tigger in Handcuffs!
I am 100% with Dave on this one.
In addition to that....I think there is a false sense of security within the 'World' however. I am not saying that this guy's action were the fault of the girl and her mother. What I am saying is that too many times, I have been carefree and forgot that I am in a public place, not a members-only park. Even though the Disney name is there, it isn't a fairy tale world. The issues from the outside world are making their way in. Security at the park entrances is a perfect example. Now with this situation, the 'handlers' will have to watch both sides of the interaction. No more of watching the clock and line, but what is happening in that one-on-one moment.
It may seem that Disney is slacking, and I'm sure recent events in Disneyland and within the company aren't helping that image at all. But I know this- Walt's ultimate vision has never been far from the minds of every person who draws a paycheck from the company. This issue will be taken care of, and unfortunately we probably won't know what they are doing to insure that it doesn't happen again. It always seems that the bad is press fodder, and the good is ignored. But I will rest easy knowing that it is being addressed and that Disney Co. is making every stride possible to maintain the 'Happiest Place on Earth' image Walt envisioned 50-odd years ago.
