What a week...and it’s only Tuesday! [updated 10/27, post #20] - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

Oh, no! I'm glad your back is better and the trip is underway. I know it is most exciting for you and your DD to see and explore this campus. It would be awesome for her to go to school in Tampa if she really wants to. How nice to be fairly close to WDW and to you in your new home once you move there. Either way it will provide a good meeting place for holidays and such. Good luck on the trip and take care of your back.

DD is more convinced than ever that this is the school for her! Yesterday’s visit was for their Science Day as we had done the regular tour back in February. She wants to major in marine bio so it was fabulous getting to see their Marine Bio Field Station. She also got to talk informally with professors and current students in her desired major. It was also great to have DS with us as he wasn’t here for the Feb tour. I wanted him to experience a college campus and especially this one if DD ends up there. They are incredibly close and he I wanted him to have a visual on where her new home might be. Most times when I discuss privately with him about her leaving he says “I don’t want to talk about it” and I understand. He’s excited for her but knows he’ll miss her. He’s already asked DD if they can FaceTime when she’s there. Now I just need a little pixie dust that DD gets accepted!!! She is a solid “A” student with extra curricular a so here’s hoping. They had sent her a letter inviting her to apply through their “Fast track” process because of her good grades and extra curricular work. Submit by 11/1 and know by 11/15. Fingers crossed!!!!
We finally made it to POR but later than anticipated. The tour finished late which pushed us into rush hour on a Friday By the time we got settled in the kids just wanted to shower and climb in bed. I was totally ok with that, lol. We’re only here for the weekend so only hitting MK, EP and some shopping at DSp.
I'm so glad the tour was a success. Good for DD being invited to apply early. Only two weeks to wait for an answer is great. Fingers crossed for her. I imagine if you know in November where she's going to college it will make her senior year less stressful. I have a junior and we just went on our first tour this week. Enjoy the weekend!
My concern about your not sharing too many feeling with your Dd comes from personal experience. I got very ill when my DD was applying to med school. She was accepted a great school she really loved but when accepted by a local swchool pulled her applications and acceptances and decided the local school was where she would go although she liked other programs better.
She is getting ready to graduate and I am glad she doesn't feel the need to be nearby as she looks for residencies. I am also moving close to a sibling so she doesn't have to feel like she is my health caretaker. Her choice worked out and I hope she never regrets it.
As the mother of two boys and a girl, girls tend to spend senior year getting ready for leaving for college and it is very hard emotionally for them (and you). Many push away and get unpleasant to make the separation easier. while girls tend to get more excited about decorating their rooms, roommates, etc., they also seem much more aware of the separation.
How much you miss your husband is so apparant in everything your write. It sounds like your DD found a program she really likes and while she is very enthusiastic, she pay change her mind (mood) as the time comes closer. It will be harder for her to leave than kids leaving an intact family and not having a disabled brother. The less she worries about you and her brother the better.
I wish her much luck and happiness. It is such a huge transition for all kids.
I didn't mean to imply you were doing something wrong, I just know from experience how hard it is not to have a mother's state (good, bad or neutral) impact a school choice and the actual move.
So glad you had a great visit. Your DD sounds like a really exceptional young lady and I know you are very proud of her. Sending some acceptance her way. It sounds like a good sign to me that she was approached about the fast track application process. Hopefully, your DS will handle the changes well, no matter where she ends up.
It sounds as if your daughter has a great head on her shoulders and has a bright future ahead of her. You have done a great job. Enjoy every moment of her senior year, it will fly by.
Wow, so glad for your DD's (hopefully) acceptance answer early. Our DD had a similar acceptance when she was a senior in high school. All of her material, booklets, etc., for other schools went flying into the trash that evening - also in November! She was accepted into an accelerated medical program - undergrad college and seat in medical school as long as she maintained GPA and passed the MCAT! She did!
It will take a lot of the stress of being a senior off of her shoulders. Knowing early eases up some of the tensions of senior year!
