As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). They are not going through your things. They are looking for odd chemicals, odd boxes and if you have mounted cameras.
I hope you will not take this as a personal attack, because I sure don't intend it that way. I would like to offer my opinion on your comments in hopes of furthering the discussion.
If they don't go through your things (I'm not saying they should), the quick glance in the room serves no purpose toward enhancing safety.
Have there been many busts of meth cookers in Disney resorts? I would imagine there are thousands of better places to conduct such activity around central Florida. Same would apply to bomb making.
What kind of odd boxes are you referring to? Indications are that the Las Vegas gunman didn't have anything that could not be transported in normal wheeled luggage.
The Vegas gunman mounted the cameras in the hallway (already observable to staff without entering the room) to keep an eye out for approaching law enforcement. They serve no purpose in the room.
Maybe we are overthinking this. Disney might be trying to bust groups that buy a room for two and then slip in an extended family to stay on property for free, or trying to avoid property damage from guests leaving piles of wet towels soaking into the carpet and rotting garbage lying around. Guest safety could be a cover story. Who knows?
I was thinking about this some more and wondered if they are going to inspect guest's cars too. Now that people know about this new policy wouldn't they just store whatever they needed in their vehicles which at some resorts are just steps from their rooms?
I don’t consider myself a conspiracy theorist, but the truth is that when we leave our rooms, technically Disney could enter the room and go through whatever they want. I’ve never had an issue, and I don’t worry about it, but we don’t actually know what happens when we’re out.
It could happen at any hotel. As far as I’m concerned, the only way to ensure the safety of your possessions is to stay home, period. We each make that decision for ourselves. I’ll continue to travel.
Our last stay at All Star Movies a few years ago we had a room down the hall from ours where the Do Not Disturb sign was on the door for a few days. One night we were heading back down to the quick service when we saw someone sitting outside the room with the door nearly closed but propped open so they didn’t need their magic band to reopen the door. They were sitting outside the room smoking. I complained to the front desk because this was a few doors down from me and I had requested to be away from the smoking areas due to the fact I’m highly sensitive to smoke and they induce migraines. When we returned after dinner security was knocking on their door and the next day that room, and the surrounding rooms were empty. By having someone enter on a daily basis they can monitor who may be smoking in the rooms.
I live in an apartment where they have the right to enter, provided they give notice, to do required work or security/safety/fire inspections. Disney has given notice saying the rooms will be entered. If you don’t like it, don’t go or stay somewhere like the Swan or Dolphin which are not Disney owner hotels and have not adopted this type of policy.
I usually request that my room be cleaned in the morning so we can nap for a bit in the afternoon after hitting the park and the pool. So I guess our room inspection will be in the morning and I can hang my Occupied tag when we nap.
Do they usually follow your request? I’d love to request this for our next trip. I know they cannot guarantee anything, but it would be nice to try. Do you speak directly with housekeeping to put in this request or do you speak directly to your mousekeeper.
