Doctors, sheep and the Shard – an unusual weekend out in London COMPLETED 6/3 - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

How nice of the security guard to let you in so that you didn't have to stand for too long. The show looks great too.
We've been lucky enough to be able to get a few bits at LDO over the last couple of years (including some emergency dinnerware to match our current set just before Christmas!) but I would agree that it's very disappointing. I think the one in Chatham is the only one I've been to that's worse.
I hope the title of your next section doesn't foretell something too ominous...
So glad the door man let you in rather than having you wait in such a long line! It would have been terrible if you ended up feeling so awful for the concert!
My friend I work with at my part time job is going to freak when I show her these pictures Wednesday night! I told her you were going to this...I got this and then this...."why don't they have that here?"
I think your pictures of the monsters are great from where you were sitting and I don't know a thing about Doctor Who!!
I'm glad the guard let you. As a Dr. Who fan I would have loved seeing that show. Seeing the monsters in person must have been something. I don't know about you but I never look at angel statues the way I used to.
I'm glad you where able to get a parking spot at your hotel.
One of our metro park systems has a TARDIS that they move from park to park. The trick is you have to figure out where it is. They don't tell. You have to hope someone posts its location on line.

That's classic, as we were saying how bad that one was at the weekend! There's only one store I like there, and I'm not sure I can remember the name of it now - Alexon, I think, as I've got a couple of dresses there for formal night on the cruises, but the last time we went there (whenever that was ) I found nothing.

I had that problem with the Fleetwood Mac concert we went to, which may have been the last time we were at Wembley (neither of us can remember ) as the crowd were on their feet throughout and although I tried to stand as much as I could, as otherwise I couldn't see anything, I had to keep sitting down to save my strength.

Actually, they do - although I don't know if there are any tickets left now. I know they're doing some shows in NYC, so tell her to check out the website - she should find it easily enough by searching for Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular on Google.

It was so cool - and the best bit was seeing the Daleks, they just glide along so silently, exactly as I imagined they did when I watched it as a kid!

Oh boy, do I hear you about that!

Oh that's so neat! They have some TARDISes in Glasgow, but they're always in the same place, so they're easy to find!

Signing onto this TR too. DD16 is a pretty big Doctor Who fan and just stood over my shoulder narrating your pics. My sister-in-law is a HUGE Doctor Who fan too. I swear she knows every Doctor and has seen every show ever made. I will have to ask her if she knows this show exists. She lives in Washington D.C., so there is a chance it has come there or will in the future.

Sounds a bit like me, although sadly unless you're of a certain age (and I'm not ) there are a number of episodes that were junked and no longer exist. Oh what I'd give to see those!

I hope she gets to see it one day - it's very neat!

Saturday 23 May – part three: “can you hear that?”
When the show finished, we headed out, and wow, what a change in the weather! It was suddenly beautiful out there, no rain any longer, and it was hard to believe it was the same day.
We headed back to the hotel to drop off the programme and to let the crowds clear at the Tube station clear a bit, then we made our way over there. Now you see this tunnel…
It’s sponsored by Irn-Bru, a drink (I don’t know if you have it over there) and as we approached it, we were looking at each other saying “can you hear that?” as it sounded like a football crowd chanting. It couldn’t be, as the match had only just got underway. It was coming from speakers in the tunnel, which was a bit surreal…
We got on the Tube, and made our way over to Oxford Circus. The first half of the journey was a bit odd, as much of it was overground. Despite its name, a lot of the London Underground actually runs overground in the suburbs around London, and that was the case with the route we were taking.
We got off at Oxford Circus, and started to make our way out in search in our first Shaun the Sheep. On the way there, we found the Palladium, one of London’s famous theatres…
… and the beautiful Liberty department store:
The app I’d finally managed to download to my phone (it took about four attempts ) guided us to Baa-Bushka, which was Ok, but not one of my favourites.
This is raising money for charity and they’ve had them out in London since March and they’re only there until the end of May. They’re also going to be in Bristol in the south west of England later in the year.
We headed down Carnaby Street, a very famous street in London, which became known as one of the hippest places in London in the swinging 60s, although neither of us had actually ever been down it before. It’s amazing, given how many times we’ve both visited the capital and how close we’ve been to it. It just goes to show that you can always find new spots in familiar places – just like Disney!
The next Shaun we found was Rule Britannia, very patriotic and one of my favourites:
We carried on walking, and made our way on to Regent Street…
Here we found Hamley’s, the world famous toy store:
… and inside was another Shaun. This one, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, didn’t do much for me.
Our next Shaun was a bit further down Regent Street – Ram of the Match for the Rugby World Cup, which England is hosting later this year.
As we made our way down Regent Street, we saw some interesting sights, shall we say?
I must admit we’re not usually out and about in London in the evening, and it’s certainly got a very different feel to it. You see people out in their finery, you see others in outfits like the ones you’ve just seen, and yes you do see a few people who’ve had a bit too much to drink, especially as the evening wore on.
When we got to Piccadilly Circus…
… we found Yoda levitating…
… and we found Gruffalo Shaun:
It was here that we weren’t able to follow the printable map of the Shauns very well. My phone was rapidly dying and it was also losing Wi-Fi from time to time, which wasn’t very helpful when you were trying to track down the next Shaun. It was a bit of a pain, and although we were on the right road, we missed two completely, although in fairness, there was a massive set of construction work going on. It was here that we encountered some really unpleasant behaviour, with a guy relieving himself in a doorway, and it was all over the pavement. His friends thought it was really funny. The rest of us who had to step over the torrent didn’t. Absolutely disgusting!
I love Shaun the Sheep and these are adorable!! I was hoping there might be a pic of Shirley as she was always a fav of mine. This TR has me back in planning mode again for the DL Paris Half. Perhaps a start in London and then head over to France?
