How do you regard asking for a late checkout? - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

We'd never ask for a later check-out. We ususally try for a later flight so we can hit one of the parks one last time so want to spend as much time in the park as possible and not have to hurry back to finish packing and check out. Everything is mostly packed the night before so we can get out of the room, check out and deposit out luggage with Bell Services. We allow enough time to get back, pick up our luggage and catch Magical Express.

Usually at WDW, I've always had a late flight, but I've planned accordingly to fill the time between check out and DME pick up time. The ONE and ONLY time I've ever asked for a late check out was because I wasn't feeling well and hadn't slept the night before and I just wanted a little sleep. I wasn't expecting any special treatment when I called the front desk to ask for a late check out. The front desk agent told me that I could have the room until 1pm and that was fine with me. I was truly grateful for the extra time.

Definitely a situation I think justified as unanticipated. No one wants to try to deal with travel when you've gotten no sleep the night before due to feeling ill.

I have asked and sometimes paid 50-75 dollars for a late check out, Why is it rude to request a late check out and not an early check in?
I don't see the difference. If you want to be in before three, book a day early-it's the same logic.
Perhaps so.
I'll think about this, but I'm inclined to think the time element has something to do with it for me. If we say we're arriving early, we give notice of that far in advance of our arrival and don't expect necessarily to get into our room any sooner than 3:00 since we have no real need, only convenience, for an early entry into our room. The hotel thus has plenty of time to rearrange room prep workers and perhaps fulfill our wishes.
If one of us was sick and needed to get into the room sooner, we would offer to pay more upon arriving or take a more expensive room if necessary. We emphasize when arriving before the stated check-in time that IF the room is ready, great. If not, we'll be glad to return at check-in time.
Asking to stay longer is most likely done on people's checkout day, very short notice.
I don't personally have a problem paying more for an early arrival if our room was guaranteed to be ready by the time we request. That's only reasonable.

We've never felt a need for late check out as being out by 11:00 AM is quite reasonable. If we have a late flight, it's because we really wanted a last bit of time in the parks.

We usually book and extra night at the end as we have an evening flight and having the room for the afternoon makes me so much more relaxed and we can enjoy the last day.
Conversely Housekeeping trying to insist o getting in at 8am on check out day as they have done to us before does drive me nuts. If check out is 11am its 11 am.

Oh, I certainly agree with this. I know they want to get in to clean the rooms for turnover early, but they should wait until they get the notice the room is empty!

I don't mind them trying once but we had a situation in Treehouses where they came at 8am and we said no 11am and they tried to come back every 15 minutes and try again until I called front desk and got it stopped.

I know for myself that of all the times I have asked for a late checkout, only 2 or 3 have been made on the day of (and one of those was due to illness which cancelled the morning's plans and landed me in bed).
The others I have asked at least the day before and sometimes more than that, including as early as at check-in (sometimes if you do that the hotel says to come and ask again the day before and they will decide then).
At Disney when I have asked it was one or two days before checkout.

Did you remember to put out your Do Not Disturb sign?

Exactly this has happened to us as well. If check out time is 11:00 then don't come by the room until 11:01.
We had one lady come by at the GF every 10 minutes starting at 9:00. I couldn't believe it.
We also belong to several hotel point clubs and late check out is always given to us when we stay with them.
While we don't always use it, it's nice to have when you have kids.
I agree that if requesting early check-in is ok then requesting late check-out should be as well. Regardless of
the reason if they need the room then they can always say no.

And let's remember that this is Disney....many people are not checking in until late at night, so there's plenty of time to get those rooms cleaned. Folks shouldn't feel guilty because they made a simple, legal request that can be denied if it causes harm to the resort or its staff. I haven't requested a late checkout for myself, but I would if I felt it necessary, for whatever personal reason I might have. I'd probably leave an extra tip if I did so, but I don't think it's necessary to make a really big deal about this.
I must go to the same hotels as Eff0512 because I am often asked when reserving a room if I would like early or late check in. And I have also arrived many places other than Disney late in the evening.
The one time I recall requesting late check out at Disney, we had a person try to get into our first floor sliders at the Contemporary. Disney security was awful, I was a wreck and did not fall asleep until around 4 or 5 AM. I felt very justified in requesting use of the room for a few extra hours (I think until 1 was what I got).
May if would make more sense if more hotels asked when guests were arriving and planning on departing. I have arrived very early and very late and departed very early as well as at check out and on occasion a few hours later. When my Dd horse showed, we might not get in until late but be out of the room at the crack of dawn.
And let's remember that this is Disney....many people are not checking in until late at night, so there's plenty of time to get those rooms cleaned.
And yet, then there are folks like us that are checking in at 7am so we can get to the parks by rope drop. Now we don't expect our room to be ready then, but we are always grateful if it is by lunchtime so we can come back eat and rest before heading back to the parks. I like the new online check-in system where I can tell them when I'm planning to check-in and give them a number to text me when the room is ready.
