Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

I dont understand either. But the major reason is the healthcare and insurance industry have such a large and fully funded lobby group that would never allow this to happen. We American's tend to think more about ourselves and what we would get out of it than how it would help others. We tend to see things in a way that asks why we should have to pay higher taxes so a single mother with no job can have access to healthcare. In short it is greed and a lack of compassion for our fellow human beings. (Just my 2 cents!)

I was really just asking the question because I don't know. I hope I didn't ask the question in a way that anyone is offended. I'm just quite ignorant I guess on US politics and how things work like taxes, etc. I know that we are quite heavily taxed here in Ontario and probably all of Canada but I will take being taxed if I go in for surgery and walk out of the hospital paying nothing. I just hoped to take this opportunity to get a bit more educated on the topic.

Thanks Julia for giving me more information than I had before.

I had a similar experience last year when I had an outpatient procedure. THe facility was so busy that day that they ran out of room for patients in the pre and post surgery areas and put me in a hallway before my procedure. If all the other patients in just that one day paid as much as I did, the place made way over a million dollars in that day. I know that equipment is expensive but how many times do they need to pay for it. Plus, after looking at itemized medical billing before, they charge outrageous sums for mundane items like tissues, diapers, etc. I know that most doctors are not getting rich but the owners of the facilities are robbing people.

I also agree with the others about universal health care. I personally know some people that do not have to worry about the cost of medical services so they do not understand the challenges so many of our fellow citizens face and don't really care. In my lifetime, I have watched our insurance coverage get worse and worse; and yet costs me more and more in my paycheck.

McNeal, if you are concerned about owners making profits, use non-profit facilities. I am a firm believer that some industries should not be run for profit-education, health care, day care and other children's services such as camps, etc. I know as Americans we are supposed to believe that competition and profit are great motivators, but I have seen people run for profit industries and making a profit (unlike the non-profits) by cutting corners. You can not charge the same and expect to make money when so many non-profits struggle. I was on the board of a non-profit day care. They provided excellent care in part by paying a living wage to the workers, who in turn hung around. The for profits I was familiar with were barely paying over the minimum wage and had a tremendous turnover.

I am a supporter of universal health care. I don't think we can afford to continue the way we are going. I have met some people who could well afford insurance ( a barn owner whose child had 3-5 horses/ponies at a time) but chose not to, knowing if they really needed care, they would not be turned away.

Actually I read an interesting study about how much money non-profit hospitals make. They used the example of a non profit cancer center in Texas that has added dozens of buildings, high tech amenities, ridiculous CEO pay. Non-profit does not mean they charge less, it means they have to spend out what they take in, but they can and do charge just as much as for profit facilities.

Both of my kids were preemies (30 weeks and 32 weeks). Each of their hospital stays (5 and 6 weeks) were about $50,000. A 3 hr procedure costing that much seems outlandish by comparison.

This got me thinking. How many people inquire about the expected costs of procedures before they go in for them?

I'm going to try to remember to ask if anything comes up in the future. It's not something that I've really thought about, since we have had so few problems (knock on wood) in our family. (For some reason I do ask when it's dental procedures though)

I just went back and looked through my medicals bills for my pregnancy and delivery of my 2 year old. I had 9 months or prenatal care, an epidural, my hospital delivery, and a one night stay and my coinsurwnce total was around $1500. I am not seeing how this surgery is $1750 in coinsurance when it cost me less for 9 months of pregnancy care and delivery. I got another bill today from an emergency room visit we had to make for his severe croup. I paid a $150 copy, spent 3 hours there, and now owe another $150 ish in coinsurance. I thought my copay covered that visit but I guess not. And this is a "premium" insurance plan we have through hubs work!

Boy how times have changed. We found the hospital bill for when my DH was born in the late 1960s. His mother was in the hospital for 7 days and the total bill was $700.
