Two Nights in New Orleans Updated 11/5 - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Tuning in for the details! Curious to hear your thoughts upon returning to New Orleans as a tourist! Well, kind of.

Hi! I am already taking notes! DH and I will be spending Christmas week in NOLA.
I've been twice before, but he has never been. We're staying at The Quarter House on DVC points. I am trying to figure out Christmas Day dinner and am already having issues so I thought I'd check Passporter and came upon your TR! I'm so glad I did! I'm loving it so far and can't wait to read more!
And any help or pointers you or anyone else can give me, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Dinner on Christmas is rough--lots of restaurants are closed--look for a restaurant inside a hotel--most of them are open!

I don't think I have any photos of Vanessa--sorry! I'm sure Tanya has some she can post! I always seem to have very full days! I need more down time!
We managed to get up and out close to on time. I had planned on parking at one of the offsite parking lots, but we were cutting it close so I parked at the terminal instead. I figured it was only 3 days and the couple of dollars difference wasn't a big deal.
I did remember to check us in for the flight the day before, but a few hours late--precious sleep! We ended up with B30 and 31 boarding passes--I was a little worried we wouldn't be able to sit together, but had no problem finding two seats together when we actually boarded. I had a small laugh at the gate because SWA cuts boarding at B30 before they board the next group and the gate attendant yelled at us for boarding together before B31 had been called. We just kept walking. Once boarded I curled up on Jese's shoulder and went promptly to sleep. I woke up to have a club soda and then went back to sleep. I think he slept the whole way.
We arrived at MSY, Armstrong International Airport and headed to the Hertz desk. Apparently it was a slow day--the desk had a sign to proceed directly to the shuttle to the lot. In the office I was directed to a video phone where my entire transaction was processed and I was upgraded from an economy car to a midsize. Great! Except the mirror on the driver's side was loose and I didn't realize it until I was already on the interstate. Oopps!
We arrived at the Marriott on Canal Street and I handed my keys over to a guy who used to be one of the parking guys at MY hotel. I told Dustin I needed it back in an hour and he just moved it to the side instead of putting it in the garage--saving me several minutes of waiting later. Thanks Dustin! At the entrance to the hotel I ran into Jacob, who used to be the parking manager at MY hotel--they apparently moved him across the street to the bigger property. Lots of hugs were exchanged!
I finally got to the check in desk and the only rooms that were available were two double beds and I had requested a king. A mere $20 a night found me a room with a king bed and a high floor with a city view--sold. We arrived in our room on the 38th floor and opened the curtains to find a view of the entire city. AWESOME!
We had a little time to kill, so I decided it was time for a Bloody Mary! Jese and I walked to the Chase Bank on Royal so I could deposit the cash I had in hand and my paycheck. (We discovered the room didn't have a safe.) Then we headed to the Chart Room--which is hands down the best bar in the whole city and was my living room for many years. My friend Julie was on duty behind the bar and fixed us right up. I thought the Bloodys were about perfect, but Jese isn't used to the amount of spice we use and was practically choking on the first sip. He got used to it and then we headed back to the hotel to pick up the car.
Up next brunch with one of my college girlfriends and a walk through the city.
Sorry for the lack of photos--they are coming. I didn't feel the need to snap lots of photos of the city I spent 15 years in--but as soon as I realized Jese did--I handed over the camera to him.
Great start. I love New Orleans, I've only been once, for Mardi Gras. And I spent the majority of the week being festive, but our last night, my husband and I walked around, like with no set destination and came across a record store. Then we started talking about moving down there and opening a business. Pipe dreams. I can't wait to read more.

You got a great welcome to the city with your old friend taking care of the car. It's great that you're not only enjoying the trip back to your old friends and old haunts, but have a new friend to share it all with.
