Disney Parks to Wipe Hands Clean of Guests in Response to Flu Concerns - Hand Sanitizers installed - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). there is a BUT here, however, . . . . . .
a recent e-coli outbreak at a petting farm in the UK highlighted that using JUST a hand sanitiser wasn't totally effective and that good "old fashioned" washing with soap and water should still be done AS WELL as using the sanitisers.
There is a danger that people will go for the "quick fix" of just using the sanitiser after activities like going to the bathroom and skip the hand washing part.
To be truly effective we should wash our hands thoroughly with soap and water, then dry our hands thoroughly, THEN use the sanitiser for added protection.

Thank you Julian!!!!! This is what we do in public places all the time...people look at me like I'm crazy. In fact, Saturday we were on the metro (Tube) in Washington DC and I pulled out the sanitizer once we got off...since we had been touching the hand rails...some lady got offended...like I was indicating the place was dirty. Not so...but you should have heard the people hacking and coughing like they had TB.

We have these all over the College I work at. And we have been told WAshing your hands with soap and water and drying them is the best method. Hand sanitizer is to use when no handwashing facility is near by. But I am glad to see Disney add these.
Same with the Supermarkets.

I've got to agree - I'm glad they are available. I am a big proponent of handwashing with soap and water - but sanitizer is good to have as a back up.
They installed the Purell touch free sanitizers in our classroom - but I am cautious using it with my preschoolers. It's no substitute for good old fashioned soap and water - and the alcohol content can be a danger for little ones who suck on their fingers after they use the sanitizer.
We have sanitizer wipes in our high traffic areas of the Home Depot. Our family is constantly washing our hands. It's good to see other places have picked up on this-especially WDW where there are millions of people all the time. I don't understand why someone would get offended-it's for their own health!!! Isn't that important?

Kudos to Disney for being proactive. . . and I agree that hand washing with soap and water, along with not touching your eyes and nose is the best way to prevent the spreading of germs, . . . but when you can't get to a restroom, the hand sanitizer is helpful. . .
I'm a teacher, and my school went on a huge wash your hands/cough into your sleeve campaign. I washed. I sanitized. And here I sit, at home due to the flu. On the upside, I'm getting over it and I'm on PP, dreaming of Disney!
Same here!!! We have used more Lysol in this house than ever before. Both my son and myself have H1N1. We are just getting over it. I'm so sick of juice and soup
I think in the long run Disney is trying to avoid lawsuits if someone with the flu walks into the park and spreads. Though if Disney is trying to avoid that problem their biggest concern is that they don't make the sanitizers mandatory when someone with the flu could walk in and be oblivious about using the Hand sanitizers.
Reasons
They don't speak English so they couldn't read what the dispensers say.
Some guests can be careless about personal hygiene.
Finally people maybe to focused on visiting the attractions at the parks than trying to watch out for the best interest of others.

I'm not trying to argue or be mean, but I found this kind of funny. I'm laying on the couch, sick as I can be today. I have been to 4 public places in the last few days: Walmart, Food Lion, my daughter's preschool, and the Dr.'s office, all of which provide anti-bac wipes and/or gel. This means I could potentially sue every one of them, cause I had to have picked this up one of those 4 places! EPIC WIN! LOL
Seriously though, I think it's a good idea, and is probably the best they can do in the situation. You can't force people to sanitize their hands - not even most hospitals do that (unfortunate as that is.).
