I need a support group for over packers - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

LOL--we never go anywhere hardly...so I'm not used to packing. But in all of life I prefer to be prepared....a few weeks ago dh and I went on an overnight trip without the kids. I packed 2 outfits each, plus swimsuits and extra underwear, pj's, all the toiletries we could need etc, etc, etc. It completely filled the suitcase...lol...WDW here we come....
Hello, my name is Vicky and I believe I too, am an overpacker...hehehehehehe
Hello my name is Linda and I am an overpacker too!
That being said, I have found some tips that seem useful, IF I actually ever use them that is (teehee).
1. Most people buy new undies and socks prior to a trip (count me among them). Why pack the new, instead pack the old and toss into trash after wearing and then you have the new stuff when you get home. (yeah, I think about that old what if we have an accident thing.
2. Pack only 2 or 3 shorts in basic color and then only a couple tops so that all can mix and match, cutting down on outfits needed. On a separate note: only pack one or two tops at most and then just buy one each day at a park to wear the next day. Voila! Useful new clothes that double as souvies!
Like I said if only I could/would stick to this advice it would be great. Just think the old undies get tossed while making room for new tops so the space is cut down considerably.
3. Get a "purple owners locker" that you keep all toiletries in, between trips so they are stored for you in a safe climate controlled environment, and you can even store those ponchos, extra clothes etc. I REALLY need to do this one! (maybe I will do this on our Oct. trip, maybe)
Anyway, good luck not overpacking, I am sure I too will overpack this trip coming up.
My dh has been reading over my shoulder and said I better join the group!! I pack waaaaay to much. This trip I am going to try my best to fit everything for me an ds in one suitcase and carry on.....God give me the strength!!!
I too am an overpacker!!
Our trip last year I had a suuitcase for me, one for DH, one for a 1yr old( yes, a whole suitcase just for her) plus a "pack and play" and diaper bag as carry on and DH had a carry on. Luckily the rooms at the Poly were great and big so we never felt cluttered. My problem is we go during Dec, and I need to bring sweaters and bulky things if needed. Soooooooo I am trying to just take 2 total suitcases this year plus the "pack and play" and going to try and stick with one color scheme of clothing so any extra shoes/sweaters can all match.
Keep the advice coming please!!!!!
Well you had better count me in as I am borrowing more suitcases from my Mom for the 4 of us. I have 2 1/2 packed already and there aren't clothes in them!!! Yes, I know, its too much stuff, but I will be bringing back empty suitcases this time as we ordered the owners locker and a lot of stuff will not be making the flight home.
When DH pulled just the Disney stuff out of our attic and it was in 2 packed boxes, it was like, yep, its time to leave it down there. Since we're DVC and go every year, its worth it to me not to keep toting the same things back and forth. And I got to make a new spreadsheet and I know some would say I'm a little anal about the spreadsheets. . But hey, I'm an accountant, I love columns of numbers
and I know some would say I'm a little anal about the spreadsheets. . But hey, I'm an accountant, I love columns of numbers
LoL--my husband is an accountant too--and you should see the spreadsheet he has done for our vacation in September...lol I laugh, but in truth--it's been a wonderful help!
My personal philosophy is that it is better to overpack and not need it, than to underpack and need something that you don't have!
This is especially true since we started flying to WDW. When we drove, I figured we could always run out to Walmart and get something that we forgot. (One time I forgot to pack DH some socks. Oops! ) However, now that we fly, take DME to and from the airport, and use WDW transportation, I pack everything that I can think of that my family might need. It is just too hard to shop for most things at WDW without paying outrageous prices.
My hardest time to pack is during shoulder seasons when I don't know if the weather is going to hot or cold or in between. Do I pack jeans and sweastshirts or shorts and tank tops? Last April 2008, we packed all of it and we were glad we did. The weather ranged from the 50s to the 90s the week we were there. Weird!
The moral of this longwinded story is "Don't worry about it. You are not alone. You will be glad that you overpacked in the long run!"

Hello everyone. My name is Teresa and I an overpacker. It's just dh and I and we take 4 large suitcases and 2 carry ons for a 7 night trip. I refuse to do laundry on vacation. This trip I am hoping to do 2 suitcases and 2 carry ons. It's not like we take alot of e tea cloths. We take 1 outfit per day and one extra outfit just incase. We each take 2 pairs of shoes and one we wear on the way to. We use travel size shampoo, toothpaste, etc. I just don't want to get there and say oh no we forgot ...
Add me to the group! On our last trip I cut down alittle by packing about 1/2 the underwear & shorts that we all needed and doing laundry, but we stayed in a villa so it was easier. When I started laying out everyones outfits for the trip I realized I had multiple pairs of khaki shorts for the boys.
This trip we are staying at POFQ & I am not sure how I am going to do it.
I hate doing laundry on vacation but it's the only way I can keep us all to one suitcase per person so I started doing that.
I bring one outfit per day. That's it and I do laundry half way thru the trip. That gives us the extra clothes we need. Plus I knew DH and DS13 wanted to buy 2 t-shirts each on our June trip so I packed 2 less shirts for each of them and they wore what they bought.
Then I took out all shampoos and conditioners, I put all medicines and my face cream into travel size containers so it takes up less room in the suitcase.
I'm working on trying to reduce the amount of bottoms we need for our next trip. Usually you can wear bottoms more than once before they need to be washed and since I'm going to be washing clothes half way thru, I should be able to do it. I hope.
I'm still looking for other ideas to lighten the load.
I agree with the "rather have it and not need it" than have to spend lots of extra cash to buy what I already had. We drive so I don't have to worry about it. If we had to fly I would probably have to change my life long habit.
Will be joining with you, but really I am in rehab. last few trips didnt wear a lot of the things since I do laundry while there. SOOOOOOOO what I did was cut down on the clothes, did the one outfit a day thing added 2 more just in case. Well then next trip I didnt use the just in case was not comfortable in some so redid the case for this trip. Didnt take the 7 day supply even, and no just in case. Kept the 2 swim suites, cut back on the toiltres I take most of the stuff I never use, so if I need it I will buy it there. I now have this small neat suitcase that the wheels move any direction (really cool) and included in my case is swim diapers for the grandkids and a few odds and ends, my carry on has diapers and air bed for GS. My other carry on will be my bag with purse, camera, etc. Dont know yet if Daughter needs me to put anything more in for the kids, she is having difficulty packing, maybe I can get her to join. I feel I am truly on the road to recovery.

Love the Magic of Disney Thanks Dad for our first 5 trips.
I used to belong to this group, but then the airlines started charging for checked luggage.
I leave a month from today and we are going for 5 days, I am trying very hard to only bring what I will need. Here's hoping I can control my urge to want to pack extra clothes that I will not need.
